Nope. As I said in another thread, if you need to drive the next morning, don't drink.

That's how you avoid it

Your Thread title says "Minister claims garda only do breathalyser between 12am and 2am"

Let's be clear, that's not at all what he said.
He said he believes that the tests should only be carried out at those times.
He is wrong!
People can be drunk/impaired and choose to drive at anytime and testing for same should never be temporally restricted.

Your thread title seems to imply Garda are only testing between those times as a matter of fact, it's not.

Breath testing and impairment testing is a vital part of road policing and public safety.
If you have been on the booze the night before and drive be it to mass, to school or wherever.
You are taking a decision to risk your own and others safety and are subject to the appropriate tests and sanction.

He said the focus of tests should be between 12 and 2 when people are leaving pubs. He didn't say that's not the only time they should be at.

I think he's right. I've never been tested at night but have been several times the next morning.

when do drink drivers cause deaths? if its during morning rush hour then thats when the test checkpoints should be done.

Probably a deterrent effect whenever they do it. As I say,do they have time for checkpoints at night?
Have met a few though,even a couple in the early hours.

the purpose of drink driving laws is to save lives. drink driving checkpoints should be in place during times when drink drivers statistically cause deaths. am i wrong?

Yes, you are wrong. If you are over the limit at any time you shouldn't be driving. If checks are being done only during "statistics time" then people will be happy to take their chances during other times.

That's what people are doing now however. I know a number of people who are more than happy to drive home after a few pints but won't drive the next morning. Crazy situation due to a poor policy from the guards.

Just don't drink and drive anytime and you won't have to worry. If you are still under the influence the next morning then you shouldn't be driving. It's very simple. I do not get this obsession with the time they are breathalysing obviously they are catching people at other times or they wouldn't do it.

If you target solely those times, then you would have people who assume they can get away with driving while drunk under the other hours. It's not exactly difficult to work out.

That link didn’t specify how many drink driving accidents were from the morning after.

Probably stopping people in slow rush hour traffic isn’t much use anyway precisely because slow traffic doesn’t lead to too many serious accidents.

They do test at all times. Ignore the single accounts here of never seeing them test.

My work deals with the putting on of the various tests and other incidents and I can assure you, they test:

Late at night
Early in the morning

And also as people are going home from work.

It's mostly a preventative measure and they also check for other things on the checkpoints, such as tax, insurance etc.

But they do test all day, and they are correct to do so.

They don't focus on the mornings. I have seen then in the evening. The only time I have been in a car that was stopped was a Saturday afternoon about 6.

People are being killed in the morning so they should also breathylise then
