How many suckler cows are left?:o AFAIK suckler calf registrations are well down so far this year.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I think they are down for the time of year as calving is slow to begin. For me, I'm a month behind on last year. With the tough spring, hard to get cows to go to dairy early last year. I wonder what those registration figures will be in a months time. Will tell a lot.

    Terms and conditions on agriculture.gov.ie/beep.

It says calves can be weighed anytime from birth until weaning but then says that ICBF will suggest a 4 week window to weigh calves and want farmers to stick to this timeframe.

It says they want you to stick to it but it doesn't say you have to. The last of my cows are calving the first week in May. As soon as she goes I'll be weighting, you've to do it all the one day so I'll have to hold off weaning the September calvers and then weight and wean the one day

I read the T&Cs last nite expecting there to be a lot of hurdles to it, I can't really see them.

In one case I lost a cow to grass teteny and the same week lost a calf, so matched up the two strays. My reading of the T&Cs is that they will be eligible as the calf was born into my herd, it makes no reference to her having to be reared on her mother

Maybe i'm wrong but i dont think it says that you have to weigh all your cows and calves on a single day although that would be ideal. Each cow and calf pair have to be done the same day alrite.

You're right, I took that bit from an article, the T&Cs are clearer

If you log into ICBF the BEEP option is there under the services tab with a list of eligible cattle.
So all of my autumn 2018 cows and calves were there for me yesterday so I entered their weights pretty easy.

will do the spring 2019 ones later in the year when I assume they'll show up there once the calves are born and registered.

took that to mean i was in the scheme

I see a local Pedigree Charolais breeder has a few nice Fr cows out with his herd of cattle. Seen two CH calves filling themselves up on one of the cows yesterday evening. Just wondering will he have to weigh the FR cows for this scheme as well as he big pedigree cows. Things like this will fairly jettison any figures out of this scheme.

Another buck might have a creep feeder.what about the calves that get pneumonia and scour, their weights will be back What about the guy that has all his cattle on rushes and bog for the year compared to leafy grass. Things like that will jettison the scheme.

O ye, all them things will make a fair mess of it alright. I don't see the benefit of it as every farm is different depending on the market they are looking for. Any one keeping their cattle for stores / kill at 30 months wouldn't be pushing their calf's were as under 16 month beef or weanlings will be pushing the calf on the cow.

It's the same with all data that ICBF collect. They collect it across so many farms that all these variations can be filtered out.

Is there just one weighing or two?

What’s to stop someone making up the numbers?

If you have calf’s 6 months old and 1 month old do you weigh them all on the one day pr can you do the big ones and leave the small ones and still do them before the deadline?

Once they’re done by the deadline

I’d say ICBF would like them weighed both times as it’d give more info
