Stunning morning in East Cork. Had one heavy shower pass through quickly around 9am but it's been clear blue skies since. Feeling very pleasant out of the wind too.

    But what’s the weather like?

its nice & sunny. windy & cold

one short sleet shower... back to sunny & wind

I went for a short walk outside with the camera and it feels colder than the last snow event. The wind is fierce and goes right through you. My hands were in pain after just 5 minutes.

    Driving hail outside Limerick City

Heavy hail near Mountmellick. Would be tricky driving conditions. Weather quite erratic.
Snow flurries last night around 1230, after heavy sleet. Snow flurries again at 830am.
Slieve Bloom moderately covered in snow.

Very blustery here in South Co Limerick, there's a fierce wind chill with it, the sky looks to be threatening some sort of precipitation whatever form that will take as the day goes on

Snowing constantly now near the Wicklow gap. Graupel type snow, turning the place white with the wind behind it. Only the mountain tops above 300m were covered this morning. That's changing rapidly.

    Science going out the window!!

    Most definitely, very strange

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,460 ✭✭✭pad199207

Those big convective cells really dragging down the precipitation. Snowing at stupid temperatures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭Cw85

Big snow flakes falling in Carlow town now the ground is very wet after all the hail showers so not sticking as of yet

If only we could get a direct northerly blast rather than a watered down WNW'ly. :(
All those charts than Sryan posted in the statistics forum show that in past winters even an average winter (1950s and 60s) could deliver potent northerlies but it seems those days are gone, we haven't seen winter high latitude blocking in years as the Arctic ice shrinks and as ridiculous as this might sound I would almost write off next winter already. It seems to me that as the Arctic warms North America winters are getting more severe which of course fires up the North Atlantic. I feel that we need to see a recovery of Arctic ice in order to get an old fashioned winter!
Moan over and time to turn on the telly to get an update on Tuesday's storm on the week ahead forecast.
