    Deputy

Stephen Dorff Cast in Fox Pilot ‘Deputy’
After his recent standout performance in season three of “True Detective” on HBO, Stephen Dorff has been cast to headline the Fox and Entertainment One pilot “Deputy,” Variety has learned.

Dorff will play Deputy Bill Hollister, a career lawman who is very comfortable kicking down doors, but not so handy on the leadership front. However, when the LA County Sheriff drops dead, Bill becomes acting sheriff of Los Angeles County, in charge of 10,000 sworn deputies policing a modern Wild West.

The actor has previous with Fox, as he featured in a recurring role on “Star.” The news comes almost exactly at the same time as his “True Detective” co-star and recent Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has set his latest project, the sci-fi film “Sovereign,” which is also being produced by eOne.

“Deputy” hails from writer Will Beall and director David Ayer, with both serving as executive producers alongside Chris Long for Cedar Park, which is producing. Fox Broadcasting is also aboard as a co-producer with Entertainment One. Ayer will also direct.

The ensemble procedural is being made with the full cooperation of the L.A .Sheriff’s Department.

Star Trek: Discovery renewed for a 3rd season by CBS All Access

I was slightly, slightly nervous about both of these shows and was doing some digging a few days ago and didn't come across anything, so this is very positive news.

Discovery gets a lot of **** on boards for some reason, but it's a fantastically made show and the arc/pacing this season is definitely an improvement over last.

    Resident Alien

‘Resident Alien’ Drama Ordered To Series At Syfy
Syfy has handed a series order to drama Resident Alien starring Alan Tudyk, based on the Dark Horse comics series by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, from Universal Content Productions, Dark Horse Entertainment and Amblin TV.

Resident Alien is described as a dark, twisted and comedic fish-out-of-water story. Adapted for television by Chris Sheridan (Family Guy), it follows a crash-landed alien named Harry (Tudyk) who, after taking on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor, slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth — ultimately asking the question, “Are human beings worth saving?”

Tudyk (Firefly, Rogue One) is joined by series regulars Sara Tomko (Once Upon A Time), Corey Reynolds (The Closer), Alice Wetterlund (People of Earth) and Levi Fiehler (Mars).

Hellboy’s Ron Perlman and X-Men star Famke Janssen are to star in BBC One spy drama The Capture.

The Hollywood actors are the latest A-list names to join a British drama. They will star alongside the previously announced Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) and Holliday Grainger (Strike) in the six-part series, which has been written and directed by Ben Chanan.

London-set spy thriller The Capture will begin with the unjust arrest of an innocent man and escalate into a multi-layered conspiracy of manipulated evidence. I would have thought Ron Perlman was more associated with Clay Morrow than Hellboy but that looks a good show.

Clay for tv but I would say Hellboy is what a lot of people know him from.
Though I do always find it funny when they have someone described as Jane Doe (Game of Thrones) and when you check imdb to see who she played, she was only in one episode briefly but was in multiple other projects. They just go with whatever is popular.
Like Famke will always be Xenia Onatopp.

The BBC shows are probably good gigs to get. They probably pay well enough, are short and tend to do well enough.

Cartel Trilogy - The Power of the Dog, The Cartel and The Border.

FX To Turn Don Winslow’s Epic Cartel Drug War Novel Trilogy Into TV Series
EXCLUSIVE: FX Networks has landed the rights to turn Don Winslow’s acclaimed Cartel Trilogy into a TV series. The series will encompass Winslow’s 2005 novel The Power of the Dog, the 2015 followup The Cartel, and the just published conclusion, The Border. Latter book, which The New York Times called “a hybrid of The Godfather and War and Peace,” and “this generation’s defining work of American mass-culture storytelling on the border,” just debuted on the NYT bestseller lists in the number three slot. The deal was made by John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions.

Winslow and Shane Salerno will be Executive Producers. Salerno will co-write the pilot with a writer/showrunner to be set shortly. FX is producing with The Story Factory. Ridley Scott will also serve as an Executive Producer. While Winslow and Salerno will not be day-to-day showrunners, they will be closely involved in shaping and sustaining the series.

The book trilogy spans a 45 year period and follows a DEA agent named Art Keller through America’s long running war on drugs. The through line is a blood feud between the DEA agent and Mexican drug kingpin Adan Berrera. Much like the actual drug war, the books are often shocking in brutality and raw in humanity, portraying Mexican cartel power struggles, narcos and cops on both sides of the border, traffickers and drug mules, lawyers, journalists, junkies, teen hit men, asylum-seeking children and political corruption from Mexico poppy fields to the White House.

The first two books were originally sold to be turned into a feature film by Fox, which committed $6 million in 2015 and had Scott as director. There was too much story to fit into a two hour film and as Fox was coming under the Disney family film fold, an edgy Sons of Anarchy-style series by sister company FX is a strong way to tell the whole sprawling story.

“I have known and respected Shane Salerno and Don Winslow for almost 20 years, and am beyond thrilled to be working with them again on the series adaptation of Don’s magnum opus – the trilogy made up of his three critically beloved and commercially successful novels, Landgraf said. “Don has masterfully woven his intricately detailed research into cartel’s and America’s war on drugs into what is widely regarded as one of the great crime epics of all time. Nothing excites the team at FX more than the daunting challenge of helping great creators make a television show as ambitious and good as the epically acclaimed books on which it will be based.“

Said Salerno and Winslow: “We have long admired the excellence that John Landgraf and his creative team have built and sustained across many years at FX, which makes them the perfect creative partner for us. These books represent over twenty years of our lives and we care deeply about how they are adapted. We are excited to work with John and his team on what we hope will become the definitive television series on this subject matter.”

Winslow’s 2017 bestseller corrupt Gotham cop thriller The Force remains at Fox as a feature that Scott Frank is adapting for Logan helmer James Mangold to direct. Winslow’s novel Satori remains in development at Warner Brothers for producer and star Leonardo DiCaprio.

Landgraf, Winslow, and Salerno first worked together on the 2001 NBC television series UC: Undercover, which Winslow and Salerno co-created and executive produced with Landgraf, when the latter ran Jersey television. Under Landgraf, FX’s recent series dramas have included The People vs. O.J. Simpson, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, Fargo, Feud and The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

The trilogy has made Winslow an internationally bestselling author, and the former private detective’s voluminous research has made him an outspoken voice in the national debate over border security, the handling of migrant children, the opioid crisis, and the influence of foreign money on the highest levels of U.S. government.

    Prodigal Son

Bellamy Young To Co-Star In Fox Drama Pilot ‘Prodigal Son’
Former Scandal star Bellamy Young is set as a lead opposite Michael Sheen in Prodigal Son, Fox’s police drama pilot from Deception creator Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV

Written by Feder and Sklaver and directed by Lee Toland Krieger, Prodigal Son is described as a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and darkly comedic tone. It centers on Malcolm Bright, who has a gift. He knows how killers think, how their minds work. Why? His father Martin Whitly (Sheen) was one of the worst — a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon.” That’s why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. He will use his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son and his own constantly evolving neuroses.

Young will play Bright’s mother, Jessica Whitly, an elegant WASPy New Yorker who wields sarcasm like a samurai sword. As the wife of a serial killer, she is a disgraced member of high society, but she refuses to hide from her truth, and she wishes her son would follow suit.

Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau and Frank Harts co-star in the pilot

    Prodigal Son.

‘Iron Fist’s Finn Jones To Headline Fox Drama Pilot ‘Prodigal Son’
Game of Thrones alum Finn Jones, coming off playing the title character in Iron Fist, has been tapped as the lead in Fox’s crime drama pilot Prodigal Son.

The project, from Chris Fedak, Sam Sklaver, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV, has assembled a formidable central cast that also includes Michael Sheen and Bellamy Young.

Written by Feder and Sklaver and directed by Lee Toland Krieger, Prodigal Son is described as a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and darkly comedic tone. It centers on Malcolm Bright (Jones), who has a gift. He knows how killers think, how their minds work. Why? His father Martin Whitly (Sheen) was one of the worst — a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon.” That’s why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. He will use his twisted genius and razor-sharp instincts as a forensic profiler to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother (Young), annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son and his own constantly evolving neuroses.

Intelligent but deeply damaged, Malcolm has a self-deprecating sense of humor and a surprising level of compassion.

Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau and Frank Harts co-star in the pilot, which Fedak and Sklaver executive produce with Krieger, Berlanti Prods’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. Warner Bros TV produces with studio-based Berlanti Prods. Fox Entertainment is a co-producer.

    Katy Keene

Lucy Hale to Star in ‘Riverdale’ Spinoff ‘Katy Keene’

Lucy Hale has been cast in the titular role for the upcoming CW pilot “Katy Keene,” Variety has learned.

A “Riverdale” spinoff based on the Archie Comics character of the same name, “Katy Keene” follows the lives of four characters — including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene — as they chase dreams in New York City. The musical dramedy chronicles the origins and struggles of four aspiring artists trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio.

The character of Katy is described as a bold, big-hearted and independent twenty-something New Yorker, who aspires to be a fashion designer. When she’s not working as a personal shopper at a luxury department store, she’s navigating friendship and dating in the big city.

Hale is best known for playing Aria Montgomery in the Freeform teen drama “Pretty Little Liars,” and was also the lead in the Blumhouse horror thriller “Truth or Dare.” She is managed by Alissa Leeds at Reel Talent Management and represented by ICM Partners.

She joins previously announced cast members who include Camille Hyde, Lucien Laviscount, Ashleigh Murray, Jonny Beauchamp, and Julia Chan.

Robert Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi will write and executive produce, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater also executive producing. As Variety exclusively reported, Maggie Kiley will direct the pilot. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.

    Good Lord Bird

Ethan Hawke And Jason Blum On Genesis Of Showtime’s ‘Good Lord Bird’
Hawke said, “dominoes started falling.” And Monday afternoon at SXSW 2019, hours after Showtime revealed that it will make Good Lord Bird into an eight-episode limited series starring Hawke and produced by Blumhouse TV, he called the project “one of the biggest endeavors of my life.” Hawke is set to play abolitionist John Brown in the series, which is based on James McBride’s 2013 novel set in the Bleeding Kansas phase of the Civil War. It follows a young boy who teams up with Brown, but the book and the series do not take a traditional historic view. “Imagine if Huck Finn were a cross-dressing African-American boy and Jim were the abolitionist John Brown. And that’s the story,” Hawke said. “It’s one of the few novels of my life where you just feel staggered. The genius of it, the imagination. He tells a story of something we’re all scared to look at, the start of the Civil War…and he does it with so much wit and so much love. And it’s so unpolitically correct that you leave so unbalanced and confused, and you realize we’re all just human beings.” Blum originally thought Hawke wanted to turn Good Lord Bird into a movie. He said Monday that TV offers nontraditional projects like this one a better home these days. “We’ll have a lot more real estate to tell the story,” Blum said. While talking about Good Lord Bird, Hawke remembered a story about him and Richard Linklater. They were trying to pitch a movie that never got greenlit, and one studio in Los Angeles told them they wanted to “make important films.” Linklater replied that they’d come to the wrong place. “[McBride] tells a story about John Brown and it’s not important,” Hawke said. “He’s a human being…but he’s a fanatic and a lunatic. He suffers from mental illness. It’s all human beings. “It does that thing art can do, which is go where politics can’t because it doesn’t have an agenda.” Hawke and Blum, who have been friends for decades, previously worked together on The Purge TV series.
