But here it's definitely not.

I find that hard to believe, I don't know why but I can't really see any particular parish having to struggle, they'd be looked after

They might struggle for priests, but cash I don't think so, I could be wrong though.

The good old days of passing around the basket in full view of the community, all eyes on you to see if your donating or not, I don't think many people felt like they had a choice ha

Many parishes are, in deed, struggling to fund themselves and cover debts. Decreased attendance has certainly reduced income but many fixed costs remain.

That said, contactless payments and such won't increase collections if people aren't attending anyway.

I think its a good idea - definitely progressive anyway.

I try to live as much in a cashless world as I can (yes I actively avoid places without card machines).

anyway, last sunday I happened to be at an anniversary mass in Kilkenny for a relative and realised I hadn't a cent for the (now 2) collections - and I wondered to my GF afterwards wouldn't it be handy if there was a machine pre-loaded with €2 or whatever at the door to tap on the way in

I mentioned it to someone I know in the fund-raising arm of a very well known charity, in reference to street collections and they are looking at it too. Tap as you pass. I imagine there's regulatory and trust issues to overcome first.

Most if not all religions are funded by their followers. At least with the RCC tithes are voluntary.

Catholic Church is global with over 1 billion members, they've churches in nearly every corner of the planet.

The Vatican could't fund that indefinitely. The need Parishes to be self sufficient for the most part.

It's a pyramid scheme, so only rich at the top.

And a declining business model means they may end up moving to a subscription model at some point in time, like other cults who want a percentage of your income. Wouldn't be surprised if they try tapping the elderly for a percentage of their wills/estate.

Catholics should be taxed in order to fund their religion just like there is a religious tax in Germany. Then we'll see who are the genuine believers.

The catholic church helps many through charity, through the hope of heaven etc and there are definitely good honest people in the priesthood etc, but that is usually overshadowed by its many flaws, and it's greed for power and control, and history of selfish self preserving deceit.
This dark cloud tips the scales to the negative,and the message is lost because of the messenger.

Don't know why they are cribbing a big issue with many j know is parishes starting giving out a box of small envelopes for collections a few years ago that you drop in to the collection plate so people won't see what your giving

Yet each envelope has a unique number to identify each house so the Priest, Parish secretary and whatever collectors doing the counting know what you handed in

A lot stopped giving aroind here after that, found it fierce cheek

Assistance from the government probably. I'd say in another 20years they will be even worse off as the generation that currently attend now who donate won't be around.
You go to mass on a Sunday the vast majority are elderly people once they pass away church's will begin closing as no one will be going.
There's a church in tallaght I know of that will definitely be closing in the coming months.
The priest basically begged people to attend his mass.
No doubt when it does close the community will be in uproar. The same community who call themselves Catholics but have only seen the inside of a church a handful of times.

Go to mass on a quiet day. Set up a skimming device on the machine and have your money stolen. I don't go to mass but no way would I be using a card machine in a church.

In our parish that was a different collection, closer to a tithe, in addition to the mass plate

If it's a funeral I think you should give something, Sacriston, servers, cleaners are giving up their time for you
