I wonder are Dave Fannings days numbered at RTE? He no longer gets to fill in for Tubs or Darcy on R1, no specials this Xmas either.

Fab 50 should be due any day now.

I understand that there will NOT be a Year: 2018 edition of "Dave Fanning’s Fab 50" countdown.

I've looked on the RTÉ Radio 2FM website and saw nothing promoting 2018 edition anywhere.

Dave Fanning now only broadcasts on Weekends on 2FM
    09:00-11:00am Saturdays
    09:00-11:00am Sundays
    https://2fm.rte.ie/2fm-shows/dave-fanning/

Just managed to find a disappointing reference to it below here:

I think you are probably right.

    Not sure how Dave Fanning & Larry Gogan can fit in with the current 2FM schedule to be honest. RTÉ Radio 1 or RTÉ Gold would seem more appropriate these days given the gap in age demographic. The following radio presenters form part of it's line up which include some well-known DJs on various stations like 2FM, Today FM, 4FM etc;

    Will Leahy,
    Rick O'Shea,
    Michael Cahill,
    Al Dunne,
    Marian Farrell,
    Mickey Mac (aka Michael MacNamara),
    Michael Comyn,
    Karl Tsigdinos,
    Nails Mahoney (aka Brian McColl),
    Stephen Daly,
    John Daly.

Note: Larry Gogan is billed to present a show on RTÉ Gold called "The Classic Album" on Sun 30/12/18 at 7:00pm.

I heard the much of the show this morning and I was wondering and eventually realised it was someone by the name of: Maggie Doyle who was sitting-in for Ryan Tubridy which would have been a longer shift from 09:00-11:00am. She was well able and I liked her interview technique with one of the guests. I like the idea that RTÉ Radio 1 would give fresh voices an opportunity to showcase their ability on the national airwaves. Maggie sounded calm and experienced so; perhaps she has been given opportunities on other radio stations too prior to her current stint on Radio 1?

I suppose at the end of the day a presenter needs to ensure that they can be understood clearly by the audience tuning in. The late Gerry Ryan back in the day did not hide his Dublin accent on RTÉ Radio 2FM nationwide nor would Niall Boylan on Classic Hits (formerly 4FM) which probably has much of it's audience base from Cork, Limerick, Clare & Galway in addition to Dublin. I reckon once presenters with strong local accents can be clearly understood by a mass audience from within their intended broadcast area then it's fine. Gerry Ryan was a ratings winner for 2FM with The Gerry Ryan Show from 1988-2010 and The Niall Boylan Show is probably Classic Hits (formerly 4FM) best ratings performer.

Wouldn't totally agree there , RTE 1 are not " giving her an opportunity" she is standing in for Tubs and SOR who work teachers hours, it's simple as that.

I would disagree about strong local accents too, whilst they may be understood ,they can grate on the listeners ears over time, they certainly do for me.

Now I mean strong local accents, I wouldn't put Maggie into that category, mean the crowd who call 'Cork' 'Koe-erk' and 'four''foe-err' that kind of stuff could lead to the trranny getting 'airborne' after a while.

    For me anyway.

I think that allowing someone different to stand-in albeit; during holiday period is still giving them an opportunity on the basis that I've not heard them broadcasting on the station before now. If they generate a positive reaction from listeners, they may find themselves offered more relief work down the line and perhaps eventually get their own show as satisfied listeners and good ratings will always be welcomed by advertising agencies. I would much prefer to hear new talent rather that have the existing staff always filling in for each other by working different shifts. That's just my view on it anyway.

Yeah, I know what you mean about very strong accents but we don't want to go back to the days when a local accent was always frowned upon by the national broadcaster if it did not sound like the official Dublin 4 here in this state. Similar standards were applied by the BBC in London and it became boring and an insult to people who spoke clearly albeit with a local accent. In those days RTÉ would probably have required all staff to have had elocution lessons if their role involved speaking on both Radio/Television which was no harm. Some presenters could do with it these days in roles such as presenting Met Éireann weather & sea-area forecasts etc; To be fair, the late Gerry Ryan & Niall Boylan would have broadcasted with Dublin accents but their delivery on air has always been clear unless they were deliberately doing the eejit :)

If I found myself struggling to comprehend the local slang (even from my own home town) then it would not be satisfactory. It should be possible to easily understand what is being said without too much effort.

Gerry Ryan broadcast with a Dublin accent....??!!
    I don't think so.
A very affected plummey pretentious upper middle class voice.
    Not exactly Brian Kerr!

Katie Hannon on Drivetime-has had 2 prerecorded items (one longer than usual) and taken lots of breaks.

Update: anyone could have presented today’s “show” - Katie did fine - don’t know whether it had a record number of breaks during the hour.

I agree that he did not sound like a Brian Kerr although; that's like saying that only "working class" people from Dublin can have Dublin accents which is not the case in my experience. I find Brian Kerr is a decent man and did a lot for soccer with the Football Association of Ireland however; he would not be my No.1 commentator.

Gerry had a Dublin twang albeit in an upper middle class voice. Marty Whelan would be another example as they both attended same school as far as I recall and you'd also know that he had a Dublin accent and I reckon he was not from a working class background himself either.

I often felt that Gerry never succeeded in getting The Late Late Show after Pat Kenny (apart from the one time he filled in for Pat when his mother died) may have been due in part because he did not speak with a Dublin4 accent like Pat Kenny, Ryan Tubridy etc; They also knew that Gerry attracted most of the advertising revenue for 2FM so were slow to promote him elsewhere as they had nobody to replace his pulling power on 2FM.

Honey , today’s ‘Drivetime’ was the greatest kick up the hole RTE ever gave to its listeners. You are totally correct.

There was no news on a truncated production, a documentary ( which was excellent) and an insert at the end.

That’s the reason threads like this exist. RTE are riding the rings off the public with offerings like this and folk can’t do anything about it.

All this is to give the regionals (reporters)the background geeks the full holiday period off.

Like nothing happens between the 22nd of December and the 6th of January.

That offering between 1700 and 1800 today stinks and stinks badly.

Do these people think we are idiots.

Documentary re Northern murder was excellent-I really like listening to Barry, the reporter. It’s important that this murder is covered but I’ve heard Barry report on this story many times in the past year.

In the midst of this all it's worth noting that Creedon was an ever present all week, keeping good his evening show on the 26th, 27th and 28th. Aengus covered Late Date this week from 10PM-1AM, keeping just a little modest continuity going on this year.

You should have left the word MODEST out of that sentence. He managed to fit in a minute and a half self promo for his Christy Hennessey cash cow gig on one of the shows.

If these lads and lasses have so much time and energy for these ‘gigs’ maybe they are not being worked too hard out in Montrose?

Currently coming up on RTE1. D4 accent central.... coming up around 0820

Yet another show about people who died during the year.

They should name the station, RIP 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,384 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

And now as the year fades away and RTE begin to come out of the snugs in Monkstown, the lads and lasses have gotten a good rest, apart from doing loads of ‘guest appearances ‘and giving the two fingers to JQ Taxpayer.

That time has come to applaud the ‘heros’ of the time of year when ‘nothing happens’

#1 The funerial voiced ........Cian McCormack

#2 The lady from Cork…………Lillian Ssssmith

#3 Back from the death shifts……… Derek Mooney

#4 Mister Bland with the 40 year old patter…. Ronan Collins

#5 Tie. The versatiles. ……… Tommy Meskill and Maggie Doyle

#6 The gimp down in the bowels who digs up ……………The auld Repeat Docu.

    #7 Mr Jim Lockhart.

#8 shop stewards “of this parish ‘ who ensure those tasked with updating the paying public with the current affairs of the day are kept in the dark for ten days.

#9 The bar staff in Goggins who have to put up with these neckbeards and stults bullshyttying on full pay while they work their hoops off over the holiday period.

#10. Ms Dee Forbes who presides over this non service.

Probably this won’t get another outing till.... when is the next half term break..?

Not a fan of PBH but I found the prerecorded segment interesting. This show is a cushy number for Katie as now we have another repeat of an earlier Drivetime report. Very lazy from RTE.

Martina McGlynn doing the morning show at the moment. Not googled her yet but she seems to have a bit of a personality and the music isn't too bad.

Edit: Looks like she's normally a film person.

Edit #2: Very good music choices.

Except for Creedon and (dare I say it?) Ronan Collins, the girls are a lot more knowledgeable and less self promotional than the usual crop of presenters we have had lately.
