Joe the great thing now is we don’t need to trapped into the silly season muck that our good friend The Bantam focused on long long ago.

Yes it’s easy to get ‘locked in’ as you say but more and more people are, what’s the current buzz word’ pushing back’ against crud and dross being served up as current affairs content in the dog days of Summer when RTE it would appear seem to think nothing happens and one woman and a dog are running the kip.

Shows total disrespect for the taxpayer, total disrespect.

    Couldn't agree more.

Is it safe to turn the radio back on yet?

Sean O'Rourke is back anyway I see, but you still have to tread carefully in the evenings as I switched on the other day and had to suffer the horror of mad Joe Jackson going about some interview he did 30 years ago as if it was part of the Pentagon Tapes.

Absolutely no idea. Has a more insufferable narcissist ever been given space to befoul our national airwave? Yes, the competition is mightily stiff, but still I think not. No cultural figure of any importance has uttered anything of note unless it recorded by Joe "timeless chronicler of our age" Jackson. "I put it to him/her....she/he replied to ME, Joe Jackson....I countered with yada yada...ad nauseum." BP "Zelig" Fallon has nothing on him.

Joe, your first 2 sentences of reply cannot be improved on .

    So I won’t even try.

    Excellent synopsis

Did anyone else hear the really strange apology/retraction just before the Joe Jackson programme earlier?

Was listening to a show on Radio One last night from around 10 which involved two female presenters basically blathering on about their heroes. Sample exchange - Presenter to Marian Keyes: "You're my hero." Marian Keyes: "I'm not worthy, but thank you."
I didn't hear the show, but I would assume Keyes's reply was said very much tongue-in-cheek. Haven't really encountered her outside of what she posts on Twitter, but she doesn't seem like the type of person who craves the adulation of unknown broadcasters, during a graveyard slot, in silly season. The woman has a bigger audience in one year than some of these broadcasters will capture in a lifetime.

Keyes is actually pretty amusing, I reckon she should be offered a show on RTE. But she probably has better things to do!

Yeah, was wondering about it, appears to have been in relation to the Jackson Cranberries show the previous week and some talk about drug taking among the band.

I actually listened to the show but the quality of the recordings were so poor I could hardly make out anything Dolores or the band was saying while Jackson’s voice, in contrast, came over pristine and clear. Which is the whole point of it really.

Tyrant, your words are indeed correct, and for some reason I can’t really figure out, strangely familiar.

I didn’t detect she was being ironic, but I was aiming my criticism at the monumental self indulgence of the show rather than at Keyes herself, though I do think she should have thought twice before agreeing to be associated with it.

There was another telling segment where Brendan O’Connor was brought in on the basis, I understood, that he had given one of the presenters a job (in the Sindo I assumed though this wasn’t specified. At one point O’Connor exclaimed: “Aren’t we really just 3 narcissists sitting around moaning about our profession.” I’m not sure he intended it, but that totally summed it all up.

Silly season or not, the person responsible for commissioning that rubbish should take a long hard look at him/herself.

What’s with all the repeats this week? Got a double dose of sunday miscellaneous dross last night, tonight it’s rehashed Miriam. I mean I don’t expect much but I still expect more than this lazy scheduling.

Ok.... we have PBH in for Fatteen

    Kay Sheehy, in for Rocks

Kay Sheeehah who got the gig in Japan when the Army pitched camp for the post Saipan WC.

    Teachers hours .

Well well well boys an girls it’s that time again.....

While everyone in the entertainment and retail and hospitals and travel and sport are at full tilt Arr Tee Ee will wind down, and switch on the auto-pilot. .and the heavy hitters will lie back in Blackrock or Monkstown or clontarf to leave the controls in the hands of anyone not ‘senior’ enough to work teachers hours.

Big question is Will Joe Jackson appear from the woodwork with a 2 hour special,

Will there be an upsurge in self harm after 2 hours of Ronan Collins

Will, God forbid, Brenda Donahue be roaring and shouting when I am snoozing on the lazeeeboy full of curried turkey?

Who will we hear who we have never heard before

Will Derek Mooney have a big input

I’m so excited I need a lie down

Most of my predictions are pure speculation although; I do recall John Creedon mentioning doing Christmas Day shift

Repeats of Documentary on 1 (or Doc on 1)
Marty Morrissey or Derek Mooney or Brenda Donoghue in for Ray D'Arcy
Shay Byrne will swap for later shift
John Creedon will do earlier shift Christmas Day/ Fiachra from Hothouse Flowers might deputise?
Carol Moran in for Ronan Collins over holidays?
Kathryn Thomas in for Ryan Tubridy
Aonghas McAnally will fill in as presenter/producer somewhere
Kay Sheehy in for Seán Rocks on Arena
Philip Boucher-Hayes in for Mary Wilson on Drivetime
Brendan O'Connor in for Marian Finucane on Sat/Sun 11-1 - cough, cough :)
Repeats of Quiz / Satirical programmes that had aired on Bank Holidays during the year after 1:00pm News Headlines
Lillian Smith will fill in for Cathal Murray on Late Date 11:00pm
    Music with Neil Doherty
RTÉ Gold on Radio 1 extended :)

Hopefully Kathryn Thomas will never be heard again on Radio 1. You think Brenda Donaghue shouts? This one is way worse..

Wonder are they going to do the celebrity/politicians doing guest spots on late date? Hopefully not..

Been a new voice on Late Date - to me anyway - past couple of nights. Matthew something or other, never quite caught last name.

    Well anything is possible when you discover Christmas themed music tracks all going out on a loop during Summer time. They should ensure these tapes are put away and double-checked properly before shutting down when you are into national holiday shutdown periods like Christmas/New Year, St. Patrick's Day, Easter holidays, Bank Holiday Wkds etc;

I was surprised "The Late Debate" Tues/Wed/Thurs at 10:00pm was off all this week as there is enough material to discuss including: ongoing Brexit chaos with vote due to be taken by mid-January and how Ireland now reacts to latest British government proposals which are evolving all the time, controversial preparations for roll-out of abortion services due to start from early January, Confidence & Supply agreement extension between FG+FF, Health Crisis with overcrowding expected to get worse over holidays, Homeless crisis and those sleeping rough etc; Is it right that everything is switched off the week before, the week before as news, politics & currents affairs does not necessarily stop just because it suits holiday leave at Montrose!

Oh I was not listening after 11:00pm news+sport so; I guess I missed the voice. The holiday fill-in schedule is well under way then :) I miss the "Tonight with Vincent Browne" radio show that used go out on RTÉ Radio 1 back in the early 2000's. Vincent Browne used also have "Midnight Court" programme too on RTÉ Radio 1 on those years. Sometimes "Tonight with Vincent Browne" show would extend beyond 11:00pm if necessary just like Gay Byrne used be able to extend his "The Late Late Show" broadcast if a topic or special guests merited on the odd occasion. I gather Gay had more influence as he was both presenter & producer of the show for most years until the end of his time as host in May, 1999.

The Late Date lad seems to be Mathieu Norrie formerly of KFM and has appeared on Lyric as well. Have a D’arcy pre record to look forward to on New Years Eve, the “best bits” of soundtrack to your life.

Remember the tsunami in the Philippines ....... these chinstraps were down in Goggins of Monkstown when the disaster hit. Montrose was on autopilot.
One man and a dog in there and the only thing the man had to do was feed the dog.

They had to rush back and interrupt a Joe Jackson ‘special’ .

The Birdman had to be dispatched to the East to make us aware of one of the greatest natural disasters of our time.

Think Mathieu has filled in for Marty Whelan on Lyric-I liked him as a sub

I thought Charlie was broadcasting from Haiti the time of the tsunami. I recall him standing by a boat on camera interviewing an Irish man out there. Not sure if the Irish man interviewed was providing humanitarian assistance or had been there on holiday and got caught up in the disaster.

Now that you mention the Philippines, I think this was probably the first time I ever remember RTÉ's former "Chief News Correspondent" in a story about an Irish priest Fr. Niall O'Brien many years ago? He was on this foreign assignment for a number of weeks as a young reporter at the time and was sending back reports by telephone I suspect in those early days. It was rare for RTÉ News in those days to have their own reporters abroad apart from London & Brussels and they did not even have a Washington correspondent until much later when Mark Little took up the position. Most foreign reports on RTÉ News programmes were voice overs of reports filed by BBC News and ITN News in the days before Sky News UK.

When I think of it, I can remember a time with RTÉ News on RTÉ1 tv only provided ONE Sports Results bulletin which was presented by John Kirwan (Dublin funeral undertakers) as part of the 6 O'Clock news on a Sunday evening! Of course the late Seán Óg Ó'Ceallacháin did his Gaelic Sports Results show on Sunday nights on Radio 1 for many many years too but it was replaced by full sports results bulletin which would include Gaelic games.

Good old Joe, the last of the last resorts.

I think he rocked up on News at One earlier this year for his first (and last) gig in the hot seat.
