RTE allows it to be exploited as a PR opportunity by a government minister. How can you not be cynical when they report on statements from the Minister for Transport? They should leave out all the embarrassing Shane Ross stuff.

    He's obese,
He gives 'free' stuff to kids......(grooming?)
He mooches around kids bedrooms late at night,
    He drinks and drives,
And worst of all.... he's a white male:eek:
Actually, the tradition of Saint Nicholas varies in different countries around the world. Santa Claus is the most prevalent in western society.

Threads like this are cringe, or cringeworthy if you want to use grown up language.

Ffs, it's 1 or two minutes in a couple of news bulletins over Christmas and many parents will be showing it to their kids when it comes on. My daughter was riveted by it when it came on. You can go back to the bad news stories soon enough op. Don't you get enough of those all year though. I don't really begrudge the small amount of time to make a few kids and parents smile.

To me the angelus is cringeworthy. But I vote with my remote and don't really need to start a thread on the topic whenever I see it.

Also could they not finance a better clip they use for Santa setting off on Christmas Eve at the end of the news, they show a clearly fake bearded chap, could they not finance a proper real bearded man to do the clip or else not show it at all, kids are not thick.

And only 1 reindeer pulling the sleigh and 1 behind!!

Even more worrying was the lack of children out cycling new bikes on Christmas morning.

RTE show a Santa after the 6 news on Christmas Eve that look absolutely pathetic and unbelievable. He has a really small sleigh and 2 lazy looking reindeers. Kids wont believe that for a minute. They want 8 eager looking reindeer, a massive sleigh with bling and a fcuking huge bag of toys.

This and a few more posts on this thread are disgusting. People may not agree with the OP's point of view but its hardly too unorthodox either. As and aside from it bringing joy to the kids, lets call a spade a spade it is fake news in what is meant to be a factual program.

And I suppose your rightly in the festive spirit using derogatory terms like that. Huh, the irony of it allrolleyes.png

I was surprised that Shane Ross issued a press release in which he didn’t get someone’s name wrong.

On a serious note, as a father of a 7 and 4 year old the whole Santa experience is magical. It only lasts a short time and should be cherished. I think Met Eireann did a cracking job on Christmas Eve with the Santa weather update.

I do agree that RTEs attempt with Santa and his one reindeer is pi$$ poor.

I remember RTE doing those reports when I was a kid in the 70's/early 80's.

It's traditional - harmless really, even if it's fake news.

All over now though. The reindeer are out to pasture and Santy is sleeping off his hangover ;)

Jay Zee, go back and ride the absolute box off Beyonce and don't be worrying about Irish news.

The magical look in the eyes of my 3 year old as she watched that clip made it the best 60 seconds of RTÉ television seen in this household for a long time.

Watching her I saw myself as a kid with the same look of excitement and awe and have to admit the electricity of the whole Santa experience started to flow again for me.

I hope RTÉ continue that tradition for a long time to come and hopefully one day she’ll get to see the same look of wonderment appear on her child’s face....and the magic of Christmas through a child’s eyes will live on.

That reminds me of the 6 foot 4 truckers dancing around the kicken with tears rolling down their eyes.

It's only a bit of craic. There's enough a-holes trying to do away with little customs and the likes. It's harmless and adds a bit of magic for the children. That's who it's for btw, the kids. They'll be cynical bolloxes like you one day so it's nice to give them some wonder.

100%. My child is on the agnostic side with it all and the only saving grace is RTE news on xmas eve with the big man setting out.

I have no time for the Santa thing with my kids and never did it with them - and even I think it is great that our National Broadcaster do this to become part of - and help out with - something parents are doing all over the country.

So even as a parent outside the Santa thing I can not even see what the OPs actual issue is. Long may they continue to do this to support all the parents out there that do the Santa thing at Christmas.

It's just called Santa or Santy. It's weird you keep calling it "the Santa thing".

The character himself can be called "Santa". I only call it "The Santa Thing" to differentiate between the character himself - and the entire narrative, process, events and procedure that has grown up around that character.

I have no investment in it myself or any use for it with my kids - but I find it heart warming that the National Broadcaster is providing things to those that do.

May I ask why don't you do the Santa thing with your children?

No real reason to be honest. Just never seen any use for it really. No benefit for doing it whatsoever. And a few potential harms.

Not serious enough harms that I go around recommending anyone else not do it or anything like that. Just low level stuff that put me off the idea of it of doing it with my own kids.

Usually the benefits people do mention are things that my kids get from "better" sources elsewhere. Like a user above wrote something like "it's nice to give them some wonder" - but why give kids wonder for one day/event a year while they are young only - when we can do it every day of the year in other ways that last them a life time.

Further - I am just not big on lying to my kids except out of extreme necessity. Again no real 100% clear reason for this. Just the way I am.

I like the latest attempts by RTE to explain the physics of Santy by getting physicists to explain in a plausible way that Santy invokes the theory of relativity and time dilation to accomplish the task of going around the world in one night, the idea being that what is a night for us is actually a number of months relatively speaking for Santy.

I don't believe this. I doubt anyone would sideline their kids like that. Are your kids not really confused why they are the only ones that don't get a visit? Or have you told them he doesn't exist and sworn them to silence amongst their friends/cousins?
