RTE allows it to be exploited as a PR opportunity by a government minister. How can you not be cynical when they report on statements from the Minister for Transport? They should leave out all the embarrassing Shane Ross stuff.

Actually, the tradition of Saint Nicholas varies in different countries around the world. Santa Claus is the most prevalent in western society.

Threads like this are cringe, or cringeworthy if you want to use grown up language.

Ffs, it's 1 or two minutes in a couple of news bulletins over Christmas and many parents will be showing it to their kids when it comes on. My daughter was riveted by it when it came on. You can go back to the bad news stories soon enough op. Don't you get enough of those all year though. I don't really begrudge the small amount of time to make a few kids and parents smile.

To me the angelus is cringeworthy. But I vote with my remote and don't really need to start a thread on the topic whenever I see it.

RTE show a Santa after the 6 news on Christmas Eve that look absolutely pathetic and unbelievable. He has a really small sleigh and 2 lazy looking reindeers. Kids wont believe that for a minute. They want 8 eager looking reindeer, a massive sleigh with bling and a fcuking huge bag of toys.

I was surprised that Shane Ross issued a press release in which he didn’t get someone’s name wrong.

On a serious note, as a father of a 7 and 4 year old the whole Santa experience is magical. It only lasts a short time and should be cherished. I think Met Eireann did a cracking job on Christmas Eve with the Santa weather update.

I do agree that RTEs attempt with Santa and his one reindeer is pi$$ poor.

I remember RTE doing those reports when I was a kid in the 70's/early 80's.

It's traditional - harmless really, even if it's fake news.

All over now though. The reindeer are out to pasture and Santy is sleeping off his hangover

The magical look in the eyes of my 3 year old as she watched that clip made it the best 60 seconds of RTÉ television seen in this household for a long time.

Watching her I saw myself as a kid with the same look of excitement and awe and have to admit the electricity of the whole Santa experience started to flow again for me.

I hope RTÉ continue that tradition for a long time to come and hopefully one day she’ll get to see the same look of wonderment appear on her child’s face....and the magic of Christmas through a child’s eyes will live on.

100%. My child is on the agnostic side with it all and the only saving grace is RTE news on xmas eve with the big man setting out.

So even as a parent outside the Santa thing I can not even see what the OPs actual issue is. Long may they continue to do this to support all the parents out there that do the Santa thing at Christmas.

The character himself can be called "Santa". I only call it "The Santa Thing" to differentiate between the character himself - and the entire narrative, process, events and procedure that has grown up around that character.

I have no investment in it myself or any use for it with my kids - but I find it heart warming that the National Broadcaster is providing things to those that do.

I like the latest attempts by RTE to explain the physics of Santy by getting physicists to explain in a plausible way that Santy invokes the theory of relativity and time dilation to accomplish the task of going around the world in one night, the idea being that what is a night for us is actually a number of months relatively speaking for Santy.

I don't believe this. I doubt anyone would sideline their kids like that. Are your kids not really confused why they are the only ones that don't get a visit? Or have you told them he doesn't exist and sworn them to silence amongst their friends/cousins?
