You forgot sfp. Without it and the pensioners the Marts would be empty. I see it every week, old lads polling other to get the nice Charolais, if they lose money on him what harm the sfp will subsidise that the land cruiser and the Ifor. The pension every week will keep the bread on the table.

Fr cull cows are the same price as this time last year but back €150 to 200 in the factory....do the mat!

What price were culls going at?

Too late when you have him bought.

Aye but it's just a matter of putting the tag number in before the sale starts. At local calf sale here lads spend a while looking at calves before it starts

Without naming names, are the 4 brothers made up of auctioneers, buyers, or a combo of both??
    Just out of curiosity :-)

They are buyers who happen to be brothers

But as my brother says stop complaining and if you want to buy something just stand beside them and stick you're finger up

As with every story there's two sides to it, it always amazed me that dealers could be accused of making cattle dearer and cheaper often simultaneously. By this I mean that sellers accuse them of claiming cattle and blocking everyone else while buyers reckon they got polled by the same lads.
It's all a hierarchy and most of the lads around the ring get a turn of sorts, it's not an exact science and rows and other factors do come into play.
I buy cattle for myself and others at times as well as attending marts regularly so have some knowledge of how it works locally at least.
As above pulling in around the ring and bidding away is often the best policy. Standing up the back usually gives the impression of being an amateur and will result in a serious polling.
Standing in along with the regulars is usually more successful, a few stern looks and words may be exchanged but you'll gain some respect after awhile.

I came across this article in the Journal about DAFM's new regulations for marts.

I've read the article and don't have issue with it other than the part that requires mart operators to ensure that vehicles are fit for transport.

    https://www.farmersjournal.ie/new-mart-licensing-regulations-come-into-force-430112

"Other requirements include the availability of isolated pens to separate sick or injured animals, and the mart's responsibility to check that vehicles used to take animals away from the mart are fit for livestock transport and can be disinfected on site."

As far as I know the only qualified individuals that can approve vehicles suitable for livestock transport are Vets

^ Could be things like photos of calves or sheep in cars going through towns that has caused that. Or over on another thread, a fella loading three animals into the back of a transit :pac:

Sent cull cows to mart today, dried before Xmas and not incalf. Averaged 535 euro at 559kg
If I exclude a small cow in the group avg was 563 at 576kg, ranging from 420 to 760 euro only 4 made more than their weight

Few to go here next week ,as matter of interest what was trade like for dry culls 630/650 kg

Early January marts always see cattle for near nothing, the market is still asleep until early February

I had three round that weight ranged from 640 to 760 euro. Yours I'm assuming would be nearer the higher end, the one at 650 euro was shorter but a wide cow a bit older than the rest as well.

Our local was back last Friday, few more Mart's back Saturday and today Monday. I would have imagined that most would have been reopening this week.
The trade seems to be relatively unchanged since before Christmas, quality stock are in demand. Plainer cattle and cows are a hard sell at the moment. I've heard rumors of another price pull for cows in the factory but this remains to be seen.

If the factory base prices remains at 3.75 do not expect much of an improvement in February. Lads selling finished cattle are taking a hammering between extra feed costs and about 100 less per head than last year. Any lad that decided to leave the shed empty and sold the silage last Autumn is well ahead now

Hard to know if a hard brexit is already priced in?

Doubt it somehow, if it is a hard one, look out below
