I'm so sorry that you happened to have the misfortune of witnessing all those terrible things. You shouldnt feel guilty though. There's so much suffering in the world but if you focus on it too much the despair would just swallow you up. I think all any of us can do is to be as compassionate as possible and to live the best life that we can. Most days I tell myself how lucky I am to be free to run and train and just living the life that I live. Sending you a virtual hug!

Oh man that's rough. Hadn't put two and two together til now on what your previous job was that caused you so much distress. Hard to know what to say there. I could only imagine how that etches in your brain and becomes very hard to shift.

Oh God that just have been horrendous to see. That’s just awful for you and obviously the boy and his family. I can’t even imagine seeing the stuff you mention. That’s very very tough.

I hope you have a nice week’s running ahead of you.

Wow, that's awful. The poor boy. I hope you're alright too, such a tragic and stressful thing to experience and an awful reminder of your old job.

Jesus thats rough. I don't really know what to say but dont feel guilty about it.

In very difficult circumstances you did make a difference B. I am sure the deceased boys families will deeply appreciate that such a kind hearted, compassionate and considerate person was there as a first responder or helper. It does matter and you did all you could possibly do. Whether you know the person or not does not always correlate with your experience of what you have seen. There are other parallels and connections at work and best that we can do is invest in ourselves, and those around us to manage as best we can.

I could not find the words I wanted to say in your other well placed thread but I could not but try and respond to this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,673 ✭✭✭juke

That makes for such sobering reading. I can't imagine how anyone would switch off from work after that kind of experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭snailsong

My heart goes out to you, B.
That must have been very difficult for you. Not sure how to process it. Maybe give your own two an extra hug this evening and be thankful for all you have.

I just saw your other thread that was referenced by Denis. Brave of you and everyone else to post. I'll try to add to it if I think of anything constructive.

So sorry to hear what happened Barry. Difficult to understand and/or process these things.

There's a part of our job that people never really understand or know how certain incidents affect us, long after we go home from work!
Mind yourself and extra hugs from L & kids this week.

Oh i got home lit a fire in our house and nearly burnt down the 2 apartments above us because of shoddy builders, spent an evening in the freezing cold till the excellent Fire Brigade and Politie sorted it out.

    :eek::pac:

So it's not just us that has shoddy builders. Do the fire brigade charge over there?

Don’t know yet to be honest, there was no mention of it nor did I ask. Hopefully not!!

It's €150 in Meath, and I'm not telling you how I know that (it wasn't shoddy builders) :pac::D .

Hope you're doing okay after Monday's tragedy.

Don't be blaming Woodie either!! Have made my peace with it a bit more, ran past the scene today which i felt was important to do and get out of the way. Thanks for all the kind words folks, loads of considerate people around here.

I'm only catching up now B. Serious sympathies on what you went/are going through. It's a reminder again of course that one never has to look very far or hard to find some event or circumstance that puts everything into perspective, problems are all relative. Mind yourself - make sure you do a thorough debrief in whatever way works for you to resolve things in your head.

    Thursday 29.11.18

    Rest Day

    Friday 30.11.18

    2 mile w/u, 2x10mins@Tempo(3mins rec), 2 miles c/d.

Down to Zuiderpark, past the scene of Monday's unfortunate incident, felt it was important to do that as i run a lot in Zuiderpark and i didn't want to change that after Monday. Got the my 2 mile warm up done then into the Tempo part, i was targeting 6.45-6.55 pace for these.

First 5 minutes of the first one i done everything to try talk myself to stop but a few choice words with myself soon sorted that out and i throughly enjoyed the rest of the Tempo stuff. The two 10 minute sections were 6.47 and 6.48 pace. 2 miles cool down and back home, good S&C session after. 7.65 miles for the run.

    Saturday 1.12.18

Rest Day, a day that just got away from me, young lad was playing a soccer match in Rotterdam in the morning, then a trip to see a Sinterklaas concert by time that was done it was dark and the heavens opened.

    Sunday 2.12.18

    11.50 miles@8.03min/miles in 1hr 32mins 35secs

Out early morning to get this done as the missus was traveling back home for few days in the afternoon for work. I was offered some advice by a great runner here post Cologne as regards to improving endurance a bit, steady miles on a hilly route.

I headed to Ockenburgh as its the hilliest route around, its a cross country style run on grass, sand trails and hills, plenty of hills. To give people an idea, there is a climb on it every lap like the Kyber in the Phoenix Park, its longer and steeper and has two switch back turns on it to make it harder!!

Settled on running three laps at 1.8 miles a lap when i arrived, the first climb on the Kyber style hill i was cursing the advice of my fellow Boardsie, but plowed on keeping the pace steady, i recovered on the descents and flats and dug in again on the hills. Legs were wrecked after the three laps, few miles on the flat to home and run done.

40 miles even for the week, and some decent running in there. Will do my best to do the same next week but with herself away i might not get to, will see how things go. Two good S&C sessions in there to which i'm happy with to.

    Monday 3.12.18

Rest Day, severely under the weather, on the toilet most of the day:eek::eek::eek:. Got a rub down on the legs that was the definition of pain!!

    Tuesday 4.12.18

    6.85 miles Easy@8.28min/miles in 57mins 58secs

Bog standard run out to Kijkduin and back through the dunes, beautiful sunny morning for a run.

    Wednesday 5.12.18

    2 mile w/u, 6x800m@5k(90secs rec), 2 mile c/d

Out again to the dunes to run the 800's wanted an honest enough route rather than a pancake flat one to run them. The goal was to run them in 3.00-3.05. Handy enough warm-up then into the session, i found them tough but very manageable which i was very happy with, recoveries were all active with no walking, the 800's came in as follows:

    2.59.72, 2.59.90, 2.59.14, 3.00.43, 2.58.09, 2.59.73.

All a bit on the fast side apart from the 4th one but i was always in control running them and never straining. Good session.

    Thursday 6.12.18

    7.05 miles Easy@8.19min/miles in 58mins 39secs

I woke up with a awful pain in my lower back, couldn't put on my own socks!! Continued like that for the day and eased off towards evening and decided to chance a run. Back never game me and a bit of bother on the run, tipped along not a bother. Nice run in the cool evening air.

    Friday 7.12.18

    4.85 miles Easy@8.28min/miles in 41min 01secs

Back again sore, but was able to put on my own socks this time. Kept this solely to the trails of Bosjes Van Poot and Westduinpark where there was some give from the ground, back again didn't bother me on the run.

    Saturday 8.12.18

    8.20 miles Steady@7.39min/miles in 62min 40secs

Wanted to do a 60 min style progression run, started from home through Loosduinen, Ockenburgh, Kijkduin, Segbroek starting at recovery pace and getting down to HMP by the last mile, lovely run and good spring in my step. Back bothering me a bit after.

    Sunday 9.12.18

Rest Day, back again bit sore plus there was Christmas decorations to finish hanging so never got out. Weather warning in force anyway for wind so wasn't a bad thing.

34.85 miles for the week which is not what i was looking for, but with a sick day, wife away and back issues i can't complain really, could have been a whole lot worse!! Better week ahead i guarantee.

Like most I get back pain from time to time depending on what way you sleep but this is completely different to that. Pain more severe and centered around the base of my back.

    Zero, zilch, nada......

Back got worse so haven’t ran in 10 days, it’s better now and experiencing no pain from it at all. While it wasn’t bothering me when I ran I still felt it might have not been the best thing to be doing to help it. Anyway will get out this morning to see how it is.

Just catching up here B. Christ, you have been through the mill in last few weeks with everything life has thrown at you. Hope the back sorts itself out soon and doesn't curtail the training too much. Wishing you and your family a great Christmas and Happy New Year!

Cheers R, just back from another run which proved memorable for wrong reasons, a German Shepard/Alsatian cross decided he liked the look of my left ass cheek!! No skin broken but it stings like fcuk!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours also, hope 2019 is injury free for you, god knows you deserve it.

Ah here. First run in 10 days and that happens! Don’t bother playing the lotto this week. ;)

In fairness it was my 3rd run of the week, but no I won’t be wasting my money on the lotto alright D. No more running this week either because of it, let’s say the bite is in an awkward position where short lining rubs!!!

    Monday 17.12.18

    Rest Day

    Tuesday 18.12.18

    8.30 miles Easy@8.23min/miles in 69mins 34secs

First run in 10 days, maybe a tad in the long side due to recent back issues but I had to try get miles in early in the week with in-laws visiting later in the week. Out through the dunes to Kijkduin and into Ockenburgh for a quick lap then home. All feeling good.

    Wednesday 19.12.18

    7.25 miles Easy@8.20min/miles in 60min 22secs

In through Bosjes Van Poot onto Westduinpark on towards Kijkduin then looping back the way I came. A lovely run in the winter sun.

    Thursday 20.12.18

Rest Day, missus was shopping with family so I had the Troops.

    Friday 21.12.18

    2 w/u, 3@Tempo, 1.6 c/d.

Got two mile warm up towards Loosduinen then started the Tempo miles heading for the Ockenburgh Estate, in through the trails of the Estate then onto the golf course loop. I was cruising along holding the pace with ease.

Onto a trail that would bring me back for home when I came upon a lady walking her Alsatian/German Shepard cross dog. I was sure she had seen me so I moved well out to her right so to give the dog room, in a split second the dog bolted and latched his teeth onto my left ass cheek!!! The owner pulled the dog away as soon as she realised what happened as I stood there massaging my rear.

All I could say was “Your dog bit me on the arse!!!”. She apologized profusely, I said nothing and continued on my run cursing under my breath. Continued on with my Tempo miles but my ass was bothering me. Got home and surveyed the damage, nice mark from the dogs teeth but no broken skin. Oh the Tempo miles were:

    6.40, 6.51, 6.48.

    6.60 miles for the run.

And that was the end of my running week!!

22.15 miles for the week, a pitiful return and not what I was aiming for at all. But it is what it is, nothing can be done now. Will hit 1,800 miles this week which i’m certain is the most i’ve ever ran in a calendar year.

I hope Santa is good to ye all folks and have a safe, happy festive season. Thanks for the input & contributions during the year. Happy Christmas.

Happy Christmas B. You made a bit of a dog's dinner of that tempo run but 1800 miles for the year is great going. Hopefully you can kick on and really sink your teeth into some races next year. A good year behind you.

Sorry for making you the butt of the joke.

    I'm reaching now.

Have a great Xmas and thanks for the kind words during the year.
