Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Outer bands of rain moving inland and dissipating, temp has risen as the warmer air arrives with the warm front, now at 8C here near Tralee, getting windy from the SE.

Heavier rain to arrive near Midnight and heaviest rain arriving in the SW early morning with the cold front passage and spreading up over the country.

Cloud tops look good and cold and convective in nature and holding plenty of water .

This feature west of Clare is new on me. Squall? Stingjet? Or just a computer anomaly in the way the map is drawn?

Is it the front line, very sharp edge with a sudden wind shift ?

Would expect the probability of squall lines and heavy blustery bursts in the early hours and morning especially.

The series of small circular patches of lower windspeed I mean.

Siobhan Ryan on the rte1 weather just now. Orange warning to come into place for Wednesday morning.

Which would mean it would meet named Storm Criteria.
There is nothing in the guidelines that a storm named by the Portuguese met should keep its name when it reaches us.
Here is a line of interest in the Criteria status requirements.

In the case of ex-tropical storms or hurricanes, the original name allocated by the US National Hurricane Center in Miami will continue to be used.

No mention of the Portuguese Met there.

Yeah you're correct on that. Guess they need to make it clear in the criteria status that if the IPMA name a storm that reaches our shores it retains the name.

I think it was stated on here earlier that whoever first names a storm places that name on it for keeps. Seems a shame as Deirdre such a lovely Irish name.

Here's an update after looking over 18z GFS and RGEM guidance.

Complex front out ahead of rapidly deepening "Diana" west of Azores will spit out three separate parcels of energy from tonight to Wednesday morning. The first of these will move rapidly north past Belmullet late tonight and the front will shear, allowing some of its energy to move inland for a time. This will set off a convergence line possible thunderstorm event that could have some severe characteristics locally (90% of it will remain fairly mundane though). Can't rule out localized torrential rains, hail, wind gusts etc, and possibly some rather intense thunder and lightning for this time of year. That will begin to die out when the small low moves far enough away for the front to re-establish its former position west of Ireland. A second wave will then form as a leading frontal wave for Diana, moving past the west coast early Wednesday and briefly ramping up wind speeds on the south coast as it passes. There will be a slight retraction of wind speeds before the main portion of Diana's energy arrives and that will deliver the strongest wind gusts over a larger area, around mid-day Wednesday. Some areas of heavy rain likely but more of a moderate rainfall event likely.

So quite an active spell of weather incoming and kicking off late tonight with round one. That may greet early risers on Tuesday morning with almost summer-like squally showers. Temperatures will soar with all of this active weather on southerly winds, would not be surprised to see the odd 14 or 15 reading.

Not too bad in Bishopstown/Wilton area yet. Mainly just having a few showers but expecting it to get bad enough soon :)

Out of it all Wednesday looks worst

Prob 55knots tomorrow and maybe 65knots Wednesday
Think Thursday will be back in the 50 knot range

These are my max gust predictions approx for each day

  • Registered Users Posts: 269 ✭✭Mount Vesuvius

The thread title needs to mention heavy rain too as the early hours of Tuesday morning Will be atrocious with heavy squally downpours with possible embedded thunder.
The sparks should be more confined to just off the West coast but some just might come ashore to hit places like Galway.
Gonna be a dirty morning as the front passes through.
Be careful out there in the morning. Gonna be fairly blustery as it crosses the country.

    aromehd-1-14-0_tng6.png

I'm not overly concerned about Wednesday wind event as yet.

This smaller scale low running up the west coast may produce an hour or two of gusts above 110 km/hr locally, will have little impact on most areas further east. Seeing some timing differences on it, faster models have it past Belmullet by 0900h, slower around noon to 1 p.m.

For Diana, the track now seems fairly consistent among the guidance but some differences on whether it will retain its own circulation or be absorbed towards Wednesday morning by the parent low south of Iceland. The GFS looks to have the strongest winds now.

That secondary for the southeast idea seems to be downgraded to just some moderate rain Wednesday night.

Waiting to see what the ECM makes of it all this time. The low ("Diana") has reached about 41N 37W now. The overnight sensation is already passing west of Kerry on its way north.

It sounds mental outside here in cork city.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,586 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

If that Arome map verified there would be (it says) 140 km/hr gusts in squalls somewhere within 20 kms of Waterford.

We'll see if anything like that actually happens. Keeping a close eye on the radar, anything that intense should show up fairly prominently.

I'm not saying it is impossible but would welcome any kind of verification of it.

As to the coastal winds, they should last 2-3 hours at any given location then die off fairly quickly, this has been the pattern at ocean buoys along the path of the wave such as K1 (which peaked at 0200h, south 36 knots).

Just back from morning walk with the dog in North Kildare, due west of Dublin. Strong breeze but nothing out of the ordinary and dry with a few spits of rain. Despite being so close to Dublin and bring upwind of it, it's quite a contrast between the two locations.

Interesting that. I came into the city from bray and there were spells where i had to just push umbrella towards the wind. Driving wind and rain. Huge contrast

For Dublin region readers, the main band of blustery rain and wind is still off to the southwest and won't arrive for an hour or two, there was an earlier burst of shower activity out ahead of that which was commented upon, but the main event is yet to appear there. It is going full blast around Galway to Limerick to just west of Waterford now, almost done in Cork. Conditions should improve fairly soon after the rain lets up but there will be several hours of this at any given location. I would expect the worst of it in Dublin between 0800 and 1100h. (edit in -- seems to be hopping forward in a few bands, let's say the worst of it will come in a few hours or it will be more widespread in the capital region later -- fast breaking developments anyway)
