This paying for music when its free is absolute madness. 10er a month if you want no ads with super easy access to all songs and use youtube if you cant find a song.. overall miles better. I've been getting music for free for so long I can't justify paying for it

Yeah it is madness but f**k it, plenty of madness going on everywhere. People heading out every weekend p!ssing their money down a pub drain is madness too but feic it, it's all down to what you enjoy for yourself. I have to have physical copy of the music I'm mad about. There is no other way for me. I grew up in a age where the only way to get the music you wanted was to get a physical copy of the artwork you wanted to enjoy. There was no other way. There are other ways now, of course, but I'm a ritual alchemy drug addict addicted to the ritual I've always enjoyed concerning music and I can't and don't want to shake it. Getting that physical vinyl copy of what I want, laying it down on the turntable, letting the needle gently hit that $hit, hearing those sounds from the actual thing visually spinning around in my own gaff. It is madness, and it's feicking class

Don't forget to show us yer stash if you got em lads. I love looking at collections

These are just some records I've taken photos of. I have a fair few more. I think I have somewhere between 500 and 600 LPs (possibly more) and about 250 7" singles. I have maybe 6,000 CDs. That's just a guess though. It could be much more or much fewer. I have a few tapes too, but only enough to fit in a couple of shoe boxes.

Two copies of Relics. I took that photo years ago. Since then I got a third copy. I also have it on CD and cassette.

This is a 3 inch CD single I bought on eBay recently. There were no other bidders so it only cost 99 cent with free postage from Japan.

Well, I still have all my records and CDs. The CDs were ripped to wav and mp3 and the vinyl (most of it) was also "ripped", well, recorded and encoded by me and saved as wav and mp3.
I've put the files onto a networked harddrive and the TV and stereo access it via dlna.
The car has an Android head unit with a 32gig USB stick that also has a copy of all my music on it.
Otherwise internet radio at home, or just good old fashioned FM radio in the car.
I'm not even sure why I keep the records and CDs. Might get rid of the CDs soon, have them all ripped 1:1 and they were never an attractive physical medium. I do love records for their physical appearance and I would rather part ways with a few body parts before I give up my 70's copy of the White Album.

I've dumped all my cassettes long ago, where only copies of the vinyl and recordings of the charts show on the radio. Sh*te format.

I listen to a lot more variety of music now because of the convenience afforded by digital media files. That's a good thing imo.

I started buying vinyl in 1981 and CDs in 1986. I still buy both formats to this day although for new releases I tend to go for CDs given the inflated prices of new LPs. Both formats have their positives and negatives. Some of the music I like hasn't made it to CD (and never will) so vinyl is the default option. The sleeves and artwork are so much better. There's less tendency to skip tracks (although double LPs with two or three tracks per side are a pain). You need to spend the money on a decent turntable though. In the 1980s I had a 4-in-1 which was just ok - it wasn't until the mid 90s when I was earning proper cash that I could afford decent separates.

CDs are great for convenience and are much more preferable for live albums, various artists compilations and multi disc sets. The second hand market has fallen sharply so there's still a few decent 1980s pressings going cheap. I despair when I see a company like Cherry Red releasing their excellent 5CD goth / indie / shoegaze box sets only for some tools to whine "Why isn't this coming out on vinyl?"

I am bemused by the vinyl resurgence and the growth of the BAVJ (Born Again Vinyl Junkie). Where were those people in 1996 when it seemed like hardly anybody was buying new LPs?
In my experience it's the BAVJs who are the elitist ones. Some of them have got it into their heads that CDs are the enemy and won't be swayed. Their obsession with owning digital recordings on vinyl seems to be driven by one-upmanship and needless anti-CD guff in a lot of cases.

Downloads have their place and I do buy them occasionally. Don't do Spotify - it's inherently flawed because so much isn't on it.
I listen to music on the iPhone while commuting and on CD / vinyl at home. CDs in car.
Buy something every couple of days but mostly online now.

I dumped my cassettes in a charity shop years ago- felt bad because I remember where and when and why I purchased each one. But cassettes are just a pain but in years to come I’d say they’ll be collectors items probably because everyone else is doing the same thing.
But I’d never dump my CDs and records.hopefully they’ll always make CD players but I have a couple of good sound systems to keep me going for a few years yet.

I still buy records from time to time, maybe a dozen a year but not CDs.

But yeah, Spotify- I just can’t fault it and if I were one of those melenial people I wouldn’t consider buying music. Why would you, it’s all out there.

I'm technically a millenial but still like to buy records where possible. I still love Spotify and wouldn't be without it, it's not a case or one or the other

Back in the 90's though you were very much limited to what you could get from where you could get it. I remember going to Dublin on the bus/train going into the record stores and the whole scene was cliquey as fahk, the records you wanted to get were always gone and the gadges running the stores seemed to think they were some sort of rock stars themselves. The only decent shop IMO was 'The sound cellar', those guys were sound. But the rest, you just knew they were holding back the best stuff for themselves or their own mates. They were unhelpful as f**k. Now good international independant record shops online will bend over backwards to try get you what you want or at least let you know if they can or can't.

I did the circuit of the Dublin shops every Saturday then. The indies were snobbish, no doubt about it. However, I'd buy a lot of new LPs in Virgin and HMV and the number of new albums that just sat there for months with no one buying them was staggering - ones that go for €€€ now.

Both from the Virgin Megastore! As far as I recall, Virgin were the only shop to stock Levitate on vinyl at the time. I also bought the 2CD version in Freebird because there were 5 bonus tracks

Bought at the Utrecht fair, this time 7 years ago. The photo album popped up in my FB memories earlier. That's some experience - three intense days.

    Discogs vinyl junkie here.

I also do weekend runs to cities for records, eg London (rough trade).

Or into town, spin dizzy and Tower Records, must go in before end of month to fill up the stamps of my card to get 10 euro off.

People will spend x amount on watching film,s ,tv or listening to music.
So young people now pay for netflix ,spotify and buy maybe a cd
if they are a fan of certain bands .
No one predicted people would go back to buying vinyl records.
I think alot of people have given up buying dvd,s or blue ray disc,s
and just watch netflix or sky movies .
Video rental stores are almost gone.
I don,t know how long shops like game will stay in business ,
since most games are avaidable to purchase online for ps4, xbox, etc
not everyone has broadband installed ,cds can still be easier to play ,than listening to music on a phone.
Cds are handy to buy as a present .
I think in ten years time people will still be playing cd,s and dvds .
Some older people may not bother ripping cd,s or using usb drives .
Everyone knows how to play a cd.
There will always be the elite or hipsters ,
so to different now using vinyl is special .
Maybe in 20 years time hipsters will be buying old cd,s
, theres some old cds that are hard to find.
No matter what format is invented the public decides what survives , probably based on what is easy to use and good value .

It's pub talk, pure and simple. "Ah bejaysis, when I'd be puttin' de record on, it's like de angels singing from de heavens!"
    ....
The noise floor and dynamic range of the very best vinyl cannot even begin to compete with CD.
    CD's are technically better.

BUT they are mixed differently, originally this was to make them sound different to vinyl.

I agree. USB turntables should never be your primary deck. I use a Thorens TD-150 MK II.

However for fairs, portables are essential as you will see a lot of records that look like they might be good but you've no way of knowing unless you play them.

    Those retro players are ****e.

There's a lot of money in nostalgia :)

Also helps that people's ears start failing slowly, so nothing sounds the same as the brain remembers, and it's easy to blame technology and young people for all the world's ills.

For me its the engagement of a physical source. Its process of engaging with the equipment or set up. Its like looking into a fire, you're reverential to taking part in it. You are mesmerised & hypnotised. Music triggers an emotive response in me in general and as strange as what Iv explained, thats was physical formats do for me.

I dont buy LPs for the sake of one or two songs maybe if they are second records and are a good price. I only buy records that I can listen to from start to finish as LPs should be played that. Alot people buying represses and skipping songs. thats a pain in the arse. Its an experience. I buy alot of 45's, mainly the older pressings. I try to buy cd's in second or charity shops because they are cheap.

What I dont get people who buy mass produced represses of records from the past, if not all are mastered from digital files and not from tape, ripped from a cd etc Also people who play the records on a crosley suitcase player that argue that vinyl sound great and thats its the best format:confused:

I have a lot of one-tracker LPs that I move on, if the good track exists on a 45 and I can subsequently find a copy. The lounge / easy listening genre is notorious for one funky tune amongst the dross.

The vinyl reissue market is massive - perplexing in a way as many of these people were nowhere to be found 20 / 25 years ago [age is not an excuse for some of them]. The same ones are now making snide comments about CDs at every opportunity. Yesterday, a Paul Young CD singles box set was announced and you had the usual dickheads moaning "what about a vinyl release".

Years back I ripped all my CDs to disk years ago, and then ditched a lot of the CDs, I grew up on vinyl and tape and I never really cared for CD's even though CD became the bulk of my collection

had the ripped files on two different hard drives and they both managed to die on their holes at the same time so all I had after that was whatever I'd copied to my mp3 players and up to google play (low quality)

Lesson learned about physical media, storage is a pain but its worth it. I've started buying the old stuff that I really like on vinyl. But the whole vinyl collector craze has made buying old albums that were never reissued a waste of time. I'm not forking out 50-80 quid for a second hand LP
