So it's nearly Friday on the $9m winner takes all one off matchplay, in the press conference last night Phil bet Tiger $100,000 he'd birdie the first hole, Tiger said double it!
So a $200,000 bet from Phil he'll birdie the first hole.
Staged or not, should be interesting....

Distasteful sideshow by grubby multi-millionaires. Box office or not, I'd rather watch a golfer compete for their playing rights than that backslapping circus.

its pay per view in US on TNT so no golf channel feed for Sky to pickup... I'd be surprised if they show it

It is a Pay Per View only event. Also no general public allowed into the golf course.

Whilst I like both players, I think this event is a farce. And watching Phil flippantly betting 100k that he will birdie the 1st hole only for Tiger to retort "double it", just didn't sit well with me.

Golf needs to distance itself from the perspective that it's only a game for rich old codgers.

the only way this would sit well with me is if the pair of them were putting up their own money and it was all in aid of charity

I wonder if the multi-millionaire Tiger Woods or the multi-millionaire Phil Mickelson wins the multi-millions on offer? I bet whoever wins will be reasonably satisfied and the loser slightly disgruntled. Compelling :D

That side-bet is a vulgar flaunting of wealth (quite Trump-esq)
In fact the whole thing is very crass and distasteful
    I won't be watching

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,346 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Well it's the same old golf week in week out, 4 rounds with a cut.
The odd matchplay and the Ryder Cup once every two years so a head to head is a bit of a change for me and I'm going to watch it anyhow for the craic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭heebusjeebus

So no legit ways to watch it on this side of the Atlantic?
Hopefully my IPTV source will have it.

its an interesting experiment on what could be a new way of presenting golf....
3 hours vs full day... everyone mic'd up - they'll have drones providing previews etc...

the money is golf in general is massive but there is an argument that its distributed too evenly...

Tiger and Phil are single-handedly responsible for massively increasing the prize funds through bringing in corporate sponsors...

essentially they are cashing in on a small portion of that ability to generate revenue now...

Did they not already agree that the side bets would be going to the winning players charity? I thought that was the case last i read anyway.

I think it is the only decent thing about the event.

    players own money gets bet.
    winnings go to charity...…. apparently

Side bets are for winners charity of choice and come out of players pocket

    Tiger to win it 10 & 8

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,111 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

it is all a bit crass american and UFC.

Very sad to watch two rich guys - with great history in the game - carrying on like Conor Mcgregor.

    I'm exaggerating.

But........................................ this 200 K on first hole was enough for me.

Tiger V Phil, me hole, two has beens dueling it out in a hyped up and utterly meaningless PR stunt, this won't have any real sway with golf fans, outside of the 90% or so of the spoon fed "red top" brigade.

I for one am looking forward to watching it.

    Brazil 70 v Liverpool 88
    Fangio v Villeneuve
    Sampras v Federer
    Dublin 17 v Dublin 18:)

The best golfer of all time versus the 2nd best golfer of all time. Whats not to like?!

Its no more crass or ridiculous than say the Trilby Tour ****e on Sky. Bet a lot of you have watched that and think its a great aul show.

Its the exact same fundamental concept when you break it down.

Phil wants to "talk smack" with Tiger. Did you ever hear such juvenile drivel from an experienced pro, every time he opens his yap the aura diminishes. Other than that, this alleged contest is a marketing gimmick designed to line their pockets further - and promote corporate interests from every conceivable angle.

Imagine someone staging an event to make some money for themselves. Oh the shame!!

    BOYCOTT!!!
Why do golf fans take this moral high ground of disgust with anything that is differrent from the norm or what they perceive to be "morally" right. Who cares.

If someone or sponsors want to spend that much money staging an event then fair play to them. Goes to show their standing in the game.

I love this. They've earned the right to make outlandish bets and it all just adds to the whole thing. Nothing obscene about being good enough to earn millions and doing what you want with it.

FYP, by all means you can say Tiger is the best of all time, many will argue Jack and that's an impossible debate but Phil is not the 2nd best of all time, Gary, Tom, Gene, Ben, Bobby etc.

Just exchanging emails with a US bud of mine and he played the course last week and said they have the rough cut right back, birdie fest ahoy

Of those named who wouldn’t have a tour card?

During the first skins game in 1983 Gary Player won the 17th hole after a nervy 4ft par putt. He won $150,000. He was literally hyperventilating on the 18th tee. He couldn't believe he'd won that much money. It was more prize money than he had ever won during a year on tour. How times have changed. What once stunned a 9 time major champion isn't even enough to cover a side bet today.

To appease all the fanboys on here I also think that Harrington is a far better golfer that Jack ever would have been.

A counter argument would be that the top modern players wouldn't earn a crust if they had to play Hogan et al with persimmon woods, blades and balata balls. It is demeaning to suggest players old and new wouldn't have been able to adapt in opposing eras. One with old school clubs and travelling by interstate to save on flying and one with NetJets and advances in club forgiveness etc.

Tom Watson nearly won the open championship less than 10 years ago. A freaking major at 60 or something.

I think he'd have been just fine.

Phil's my favourite golfer of all time. This is horrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,104 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

Domo you have to be trolling with them comments, or else you really know nothing about the history of the game.

150k in the early 80's was a savage amount of cash. That's probably equivalent of well over a million now, still not to be sniffed at.

But there is some serious wedge in the game these days, it's a different level. TV is just so accessible now, wall to wall coverage so advertising is just an easy sell.

But 9m on one event with 2 has been, I really don't understand any company no matter who they are putting up that kind of dollar. It's mental.

Lads it will be some craic if we see a load of shanks fluffs and duffs tomorrow. It's an interesting concept, different, bound to be a bit of fun....... But 9m...... I just don't get it
