    A network share

    Eg. \\SHIELDANDROIDTV\My Passport\NVIDIA_SHIELD

Ahh yeah, grand. I'll definitely try that.

Thats the root of your issue
Best suggestion is to put on external hard drives and connect through powered USB hub to shield and then you can actually map the drives from the shield back to your PC ,that's how i have it set up and i can drag and drop from PC into the hard drives then.
One point to note when you do connect a hard drive to the shield is that it creates its own folder on the hard drive and calls it NVIDIA SHIELD this is the writable folder that your media then goes in and you create a subfolder structure i.e. TV Shows/Movies etc.

One last Q. You mentioned a powered USB hub. Is that because of the issues with overheating when directly connected to the Shield?

I have 3 External Hard Drives connected to a Hub so I decided I would get a powered one as some Drives just don't get the right power to get them spinning up and you end up with an annoying clicking noise from the drive.
The Shield has 2 ports so it allows expansion also when you have the powered Hub.
Port 1 gets used for expanding internal storage on the Shield

I had the same query as chewed. I've only one 4TB external drive so I presume it doesn't need a hub.

    You should be fine so

Most routers also have a usb port and allow for adding storage as network storage could be handier than plugging more stuff in beside the Shield. It's also something that's left on at all times

I have media on NAS drive mounted as storage on Shield, I use plex server on the shield and it works. Needs a restart every now and then but 98% of the time no issue (apart from subtitles, these are the bane of my life)

I have most of my TV shows download to a single folder and Plex can figure it out by file name.

Are you sure you added the correct folder to the TV Show library? Strange that movie library is working OK.

Not wanting to take over this thread with Plex issues, but I still cannot, for the life of me, get this bloody Plex working!

    I did the following.
    1. Plugged my 1TB storage device in and it ran in the background reading it.
    2. I then plugged it out and connected it to my laptop. I saw that it created a "NVIDIA_SHIELD" folder.
    3. I then copied all my movies and TV shows, as sub folders, into this new folder on the root of the drive.
    4. Launched Plex and signed in.
    5. In PLEX MEDIA SERVER, I changed the Storage location to my external hard drive. The Storage Location has now changed showing my external drive.
    6. I saw that Plex Media Server is Stopped, so I change it to "on" and a pop up appears saying "Please wait while Plex Media Server starts" and then closes, but the server doesn't actually start.

When I go to the library, I can't see any of my media files.

Is there something obvious I'm missing?

There is no Android TV app, you need to sidleoad the mobile APK and use it that way.

You can get a layout changer app that displays mobile apps full screen, makes the All4 app useable.

What layout changer app did you use?

If it was me, i would wipe Cache & Data from Plex Media Server and possibly Plex Client and start again

What format is your storage? I think it needs to be exFAT.

Tried that. No luck. Plex Media server just never runs for me. Even when I tried to access my PC remotely the PMS would never start.

    Stick with it man.

I wonder if it has anything to do with Plex's Metdata being stored on the external hard Drive.

For ages the Metadata was only allowed to be stored on the Shield's internal storage (but was changed to allow other storage options a while back). This was an issue if people had huge libraries as it would fill up quickly

The way i have mine is i have a 128GB Class 10 Micro SD card adopted as internal storage(2015 model), with a 4TB external self powered used for the media

When i set up PMS it asked if i wanted the Metadata stored internally or on the adopted storage. (i chose adopted. think they class it "user" in the option)

For troubleshooting purposes i would wipe PMS and Plex client again and when it asks where to setup choose Internal storage.

Possibly uninstalling the updates from PMS and trying from there, update it later if successful

This may be wide of the mark, but hey worth a shot

I got a mail from SmartDNSproxy offering a good price for 12 months. I get this every so often.

Does anyone know if this works on the shield for UK catch up services and Netflix?

I would thanks the 14 day free trial but it seems I signed up for that before and never used it.

    Thanks.

I use SmartDNSproxy for catchup services on the shield. I installed OpenVPN and downloaded their profiles from the site. Works wonders. I have not used it on netflix tbh.

I was never asked about Metadata when setting up the PMS. I'm not sure what you mean by having internal storage and an external drive. I only see 1 option for Storage location.

I tried clearing all the data for PLex and PMS. I then set up a brand new login and ran through the same process of set up. Still no joy. PMS is stopped and I can't get it to start again.

I'm officially giving up now. Plex has beaten me! :(

Nvidia getting delivered over the weekend and will set it up. Did not buy the Game pad.

Would the below work with memory card as not going to plug it directly into the shield

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Upgraded-Version-High-Speed-Support/dp/B00PBXPM68/ref=sr_1_22?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1542886558&sr=1-22&keywords=usb+for+memory+card

Also would PS2 game pad work with shield if I did go down the gaming route? Have some in the attic somewhere

If you have either the Eir F1000 or F2000 Router it wont work

That's the equivalent of saying that I want to buy a 4K player, but I don't know why as I already have a Betamax.... :pac:

I know it's technically better but I don't think I would have much use for it beyond casting to it.

"technically better"? Mate, you really need do some research - you're comparing night and day while having no idea why or what each is capable of.... Two completely different devices with two completely different uses, and if you don't know what the Shield is about, how can you compare it and say that you would have no other use? Plenty of info out there, Google is your friend...

    Wow

It's honestly the best gadget I've ever bought, and I'm in buying gadgets a long long time.

I'm fairly sure I know what they both are for and there is obviously some crossover of functionality, which is why I wouldn't have much use for it. I don't do gaming or use Plex etc..
