Any recommendations for an mk5 gti mechanic? Bought recently and want someone to give it a really good look over and check a few things for me, as well as service etc.

Depends where you are in the country? Daltons in Portlaoise gets highly recommended time and again. If you’re in the West, Fahy’s in Oranmore Galway are highly regarded.

I bring mine to Phil wright in Rathcoole.
He has one himself so knows them.
I've used Daltons too but they are a bit too far away.

Do any of you reckon you could get a year old GTI sub 35k? I see a 181 GTI DSG there for €37,850. Tech pack, alloys and sound system with 9,500km. €43,900 OTR new.

Assuming the 181 is a demo model how likely am I to find a 1 year old GTI?

If the MK8 is going up in price and standard model is dropped a new one is off the table. Next car will either be a 1.5 MK8 specced out, a Polo GTI or maybe a year old GTI.

You'd get a sub 35k GTI if you went manual but I just know I'd prefer a DSG myself. If it came to choosing between a Mk8 Highline or a Polo GTI though, I'd choose the Polo unless you need the extra size.

Turns out I've two leaking front shocks, and the car was in for a service last week! This wasn't picked up by the dealer other than advisories to replace the front pads and rear tyres.

Update: car went in yesterday and they confirmed that the front shocks plus some bushings need to be replaced. No parts in stock so must wait two weeks this delay is in part down to the workshop being fully booked up.

Annoyed that they didn't pick up two leaking shocks, instead they pointed out to me that my brakes need replacing. Anyway on the bright side works fully covered under warranty

The service lead in times are unreal there at the moment - given that the car is under warranty would the VW authorised service centre elsewhere in the city be worth a call

This garage is convenient as it's on my way to work, the other service provider that I know of is located on the north side of the city which is out of my way.

I wonder if there is any merit in giving the service manager a call? Voice my concern that I requested a health check at the time of the service as the car was nearing the end of the warranty and nothing was picked up other than extras. Or just leave it be and move on.

1000% call them - we don't complain enough in this country, you have nothing to lose !

With an issue on a car that’s under a Das Walt warranty do you have to go back to the garage you bought it first or can you go to any vw garage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Any dealer will take care of a Das Welt warranty not just the selling dealer.

Anyone notice the oil consumption on the GTD's?

Checked my levels this morning and i was down to about the quarter mark on the dipstick. i'd a half litre of oil in the boot so i topped it up with that and I'm back to 3/4 level again.

I've 6k miles put on the car since i bought it and it's used a litre of oil. I'm guessing this is normal but i'd better keep an eye on it, car got serviced before I bought it so will be due another in 4k, i'm going to stick to 10k between services.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

A litre in 6k sounds a bit excessive to me...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

I know but from what i've read it's the norm on some cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭Paddy@CIRL

I think up to one litre per 10,000kms is within spec for most modern VWs. My GTI was the same for the longest time, until I changed from Castrol 5w30 to Mobil 1 5w40 and it doesn't use a drop between services now.

A litre every 1,000kms is "acceptable" by VW.

Our 1.6 Mk7 would use 1.0-1.5 liters between 30k intervals. A litre after 10k kms is a bit strong but I wouldn't expect a dealer would share your concern. It depends on driving style etc too.

What oil is in the car?

That I don't know, it was serviced by an indy who does the work for the place I bought the car, it could be that it's a poor grade of oil.

I'm going to book it into main dealer for the next service to get it on the dealer network for future updates etc. I topped it up with Elf 5w 30 507 spec oil.

No, he's right. 1 litre every 1000kms, which is utter madness.

I see VW have done some tidying up on their website. Polo GTI gone, R-Line added. 3 door Golf gone, GTI and R gone. R-Line added.

1 litre DSG Golf up 1 tax band to A4, CO2 up 109g to 111g, not same as WTLP results. Second time CO2 has gone up, 0-60 down 0.1s to 9.8.

1.5 finally available in the Golf, hallelujah!

WLPT has forced them to trim back/streamline specs and options, plus I'd say they are reducing the Golf range because sales of 3 door hatchbacks has fallen through the floor and they are preparing for the Mk7.5's production end and Mk8 arrival.

That online configurator can be inaccurate at the best of times too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭Paddy@CIRL

Pretty sure they're pulling 3-door GTIs and Rs altogether, but thought it was starting with the MK8.

Had that engine twice and was always surprised how little oil they used. A little of oil would have been still have full after about 110-120k km combined.

Both used nothing running in, the top ups were after the second service. Same with the 190 Superb. I'm fairly religious about checking the oil on my cars too.

Thanks for the recommendation he sorted my mk5 gti, feels like a different car altogether. He really knows the car inside out, couldnt believe the detail he went into when i asked him to give it a thorough check. He still drives one alright.

some of the option prices are gone up - with the technology pack its now €1,400 extra to upgrade the nav _ never that price before.

Still great to see the 1.5 well worth the extra over the 1.0 - no 2.0 tdi in the golf any more

kind of funny to see the polo gti gone when Declan colley in the examiner yesterday only reviewed it and lamented that it was only available in DSG!

further to the above new pricelists up on the vw website and streamlining of models

I see a R 5dr with DSG just shy of €50K now..............slowly increased in price from the initial price reduction a few years ago but sure why not add the following option on as well!

0P8 R-PERFORMANCE TITANIUM EXHAUST 'Performance' exhaust system, rear muffler and double tailpipes left and right in titanium. – – €4761

Yeah, it's around 5-6k more than it was when I bought one in 2015. Wish my wages were going up at the same rate!

I see this "3 DOOR OPTION" buried among the options too... a "free" option... but the 3 door used to be ~1500 cheaper than the 5 door! I'm guessing that might be a case of while stocks last as the 3 door is not long for this world.
