Where did I mention Nigeria or Nigerians?

You didn't. You just mentioned women (men maybe) who spoke one more sentence in their foreign language than you.

Ok I actually don't think that loophole overly sensible but that's not the problem here. If they can't send someone back home in 10, 12 years dealing with immigration then they deserve to stay.

I voted in favour of that referendum in spite of my hatred of Michael McDowell who proposed it. In 2002 my son was born prematurely and had to be brought to the Coombe from Sligo in the middle of the night. When we got here the next day he had been put in some kind of storeroom that wasn't fit for mop buckets. . The ward next door was full of babies of mothers from other countries who'd flown in in recent days . (The nurses told me). Any time I went out for a fag I was in the company of pregnant women who hadn't a word of english and hadn't a clue where they were.

    I'm too busy claiming benefits.

Ok I will be serious for a second, there might have been immigrant babies in the ward but problem of overcrowding in maternity hospitals certainly wasn't solved with the referendum because it's still there. As for complaints about people not speaking the language Irish are not exactly the top polyglots of Europe.

They didn't speak English but you managed to figure out that they didn't know where they were?

I think you're making this up.

Disgraceful broadcasting by Ciara Kelly this. Badgering a guest as a host is thoroughly unprofessional in my book.

Just listening to it this minute, checked this thread as thought surely I couldn't be the only one who thinks Ciara is way out of line.

She's basically bullying her guest and shouting her down because she can't respect her view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,039 ✭✭✭Call me Al

And I'm sitting here applauding everything Ciara is saying. And her tone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,624 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

You mean the prissy gp trying to make the women who want abortion as hard as possible. How would you feel if you needed something and came by gp who doesn't want to help you and also doesn't want to tell you who will. What if they decide to string you along until it's too late.

I actually don't mind her aggressive style at all, although it might not be the most detached presenting.

Nothing to do with how I feel about the issue personally. I did not consider that professional broadcasting, there should be a level of detachment, even if you vehemently disagree with what your guest is saying.

I haven't listened to the show for quite sometime but caught a few bits and pieces over the weekend. Is it always so downbeat and depressing?

Don't think so, but it's certainly not as upbeat as the likes of Moncrieff can be.

Most articles are discussed from a serious perspective more so than light hearted entertainment.

I didn't think there was a hope she'd hold onto George's listenership never mind increase it so there's obviously a market for it.

The item today about log cabins was very interesting. If they are anything like they were presented as they should begin assembling estates of these yesterday!

Yes a presenter must resist the urge to become emotional.

Plenty of poor unfortunate landlords bemoaning the clamp down on air B&B how can they possibly keep making money hand over fist in the face of the government making a change that has been called for now for years to help ease the housing crisis?
I'm in tears at how that poor woman who was just on air will have to spend money on making sure her numerous properties are up to standard in terms of fire safety(who cares if some peasants burn to death anyway?) , and to think she was going to buy that ivory back scratcher.

    Glazers Out!

Yes they always manage to emerge mob handed ...full of outrage and pleading poverty whenever the an attempt to rebalance this lobsided market is made.

There was one guy in the breakfast show some weeks ago bemoaning the fact that his parents rental property (a house divided by them into two dwellings) was inspected and required several thousand euros worth of work to comply with regulations.
These people are crooks, you can't have a situation where a fire breaks out in one part of a building rented by one person and it ends up killing the person in the other section of the building. Fire compartments are the most basic form of fire safety and these plebs think it's no big deal to split a residential property into how ever many units they feel like.
I used to live beside a ground floor duplex apartment (2 bedrooms) with 12 Brazilian people living in it(you could see the three sets of bunk beds in each room) and the landlord coming out to collect his cash in hand rent in a brand new E class Mercedes.
Greed has us where we are and these people don't deserve a soap box.

    Glazers Out!

How does Aodhan O'Riordain get so much airtime?

Ciara got schooled last night on the cutting edge last night.
Wonder will she go on it again

    I'm sure she will.

Wouldn't say she got "schooled" in that she had to row back on her position but she had 2 people directly challenge her. Brendan definitely rapped her knuckles and had her biting her tongue all right.

Other than that, she has an opinion and defends it. Reading the thread on last nights show it seemed people diverted some bitterness they had been preparing for the traveller representative on to Ciara because she had a different opinion to them.

Strange to see Niamh Horan being held up as the bastion of common sense on that thread.

Will be interesting to see if she mentions it today. Definitely don't think she should.

Last night on Cutting Edge she made Niamh Horan appear balanced and sensible

Today she is in an argument with a guest on meat eating/ veganism

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

If she was cloned, she’d argue with herself.

She got a bit of a schooling from that vegan advocate too. When dealing with these zealots, you really need to do your homework and not rely on the "I'm a doctor" mantra.

Yes, she played the 'I'm actually a doctor' card and the chap still ate her (of you'll pardon the expression when speaking about a vegan) for lunch.
He wouldn't let her away with her usual platitudes and half assed opinions. Great radio!

"Cackling" Kelly has to be the most hated Newstalk presenter ever.... and that's saying something. She really is an incredibly devisive character.

I can't stand her female biased pontificating, her condescending tone and the daily "I'm a doctor, you know" utterings.

A wretched excuse of a presenter. Uggh.
    :(
