Brother in law got his hands on a Kia Stinger the other day but I missed it. Granted it was only the diesel version but I would have liked to get a good luck around them.

Mark, any chance of getting a Stinger especially the v6 petrol GT to review? A few dealers have them or at least did at launch.

Driving a diesel Stinger next week. The V6 petrol
Kia have is sold so that one wasn’t an option. They look well I think.

I don’t think anyone would argue they don’t look well but what will hurt sales is the price! €68k is very close to a number of more prestige brands. It’s very close to the price of a nearly new M2

I test drove x trail a few years back Mark.
Seemed to have a powerband of only about 1000rpm. All or nothing.
Ride was very brittle on the 19” rims too and so much cheap plastic.
Kodiaq/5008 blows it out of the water I’d say.

As for the Kia stinger, I’ve only seen one on the road a diesel. Black with red interior. A good looking car but fighting an uphill battle in a badge conscious area of the market.

Agree on the power delivery, I mentioned that same thing in the video I did of it actually. I think cars like the 5008 have had the chance to jump ahead as they’re a lot newer. It would’ve been very easy for Skoda and Peugeot to get their hands on an X-Trail and pull it apart and go from there.

Are Nissan not offering the X-Trail with the 2.0 dci engine that they got in the UK last year? I think Nissan have their work cut out in this segment, the competition has moved on greatly since the current Qashqai/X-Trail were launched.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,498 ✭✭✭MarkN

I think the next gen Qashqai will be significantly better. Nissan have owned the market for too long to give it up. The Qashqai in particular is quite a bit cheaper than a lot of the competition too though.

    Nice spec.
    I really like it

520d so still timing chain issues at that stage but I've taken the plunge this year despite that.

Leather same as fine. Very light in the flesh. But goes well with tinted windows and black headliner

Money wise, I'll leave that to others.
Seems fair to me. But not done much research.

Bought a 530d sport a few weeks ago myself it looks similar spec but I have widescreen nav which was just something I really wanted. That one looks lovely and nice low mileage if you want to sell it in again in a few years.
Only thing is I got a 530d with individual colour paint and it's a 141 from UK for the same price as that one.

It's a pre LCI (facelift) model. The alloy wheels and rear tinted windows look aftermarket. It has a sunroof but no xenon headlights and has the narrow infotainment screen. Very expensive given the year imo.

Just for comparison on price here is one from a main dealer (granted has a bit more miles) but they will give a 2 year warranty on it. Main dealers ain't known for being cheap either:

    https://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=2142030&r=s.php%3Fm%5B%5D%3D10%26o%5B%5D%3D87%26f%3D2%26b%3D1%26t%3D2%26yn%3D2013%26yx%3D2013%26pp%3D50%26g%3D0

Personally I'd aim for a LCI model, they came out midway through 2013 and along with some improvements they also had better standard equipment.

Ooh those 20" alloys look well, as opposed to the standard m sport ones. I did consider those rims on my last car at one stage, but bloody expensive!

I think it's priced a bit high to be honest. Especially from a non bmw dealer without the comprehensive warranty. No widescreen sat nav either which is a big no for me. Great colour combo though.

A bit to high?? Way to high!!

Check out your insurance if you went to a 530d or 535d instead of the 520.

You did awful well at that.
Best I can see this minute is 25k with 60k miles.

Quick look online throws up couple 14 520 m sports at 20k in the country but little or no warranty.

    Not doubting you. Impressed

My cousin owns one of the BMW specialists in Dublin and my e60 was going into him to be looked at for NCT and he showed me the f10 he just got. He brings in a few cars every now and then. Planned to drive it himself for a while and sell it on like he normally does but I was in the market anyway so he gave it to me for what he paid for it. I'm his financial advisor so I advised him to give it to me cheap!! Really though I've part financed cash flow for him bringing in a few things over the years when cash was tight so got my reward.

    Ok.
But that's great for you, not really a fair comparison for price on the car above though.

I don't think the 20k is mad money, I'd want warranty on a 20k car so wouldn't buy it. Everyone else reckons its mad money.

Agree with all that the widescreen is much better

He had to buy it from someone for that price though. He just knew where to look as far as I know he just does a lot of research and puts in the time and only buys at a price he likes. I don't think he gets trade discounts in UK or anything like that just spotted something and acted quickly. They're out there alright.
I saw 330e today 2016 that could be landed for 19k euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,664 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Asking 21k for a 520d that's 6 years old in 2 months time is expensive.

Here is a similar 2014 model being sold here asking 20k:

    https://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=2060719&r=s.php%3Fm%3D10%26o%3D87%26r%3D2014%26pp%3D50%26g%3D0

I traded my 2014 520d M Sport back in April and trade in values were in or around the 22k/23k mark. That was how much dealers could buy them for in the UK at the time before they added warranty and profit margin to their price here.

I'm only in it an hour but f**k lads they are some car. 2.2 diesel, it actually reminds me of a nicely kitted BMW in many ways, especially to drive. Now it's a press car so it is bloody loaded with toys but first thoughts are very good.

Looks great in blue with the high gloss shadowline, better than the red.

How do you find the performance of the diesel Mark? Are you making a youtube review of the Stinger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,498 ✭✭✭MarkN

Plenty of torque, little bit of fishtailing from it without much effort on my part.

Will do a video over the next week yeah, I've a Civic Sedan to edit first though.

    Uploaded this today.

I watched your Stelio review there at lunchtime.
    Another good job.
Would you put 60k of your own money into it though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,498 ✭✭✭MarkN

I'd struggle to put 60k into anything these days to be honest but a year old could be a decent shout if you don't mind losing money. Same could be said for most brands though. WHATCAR? list from September has the Alfa brand high up the list.

Reliability for executive cars aged one to four
    Rank Make and model Score
    1 Volvo V60 (2010-2018) 99.3%
    2 Vauxhall Insignia (2008-2017) 97.5%
    3 Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) 96.9%
    4 BMW 3 Series (2012-present) 96.6%
    5 Mazda 6 (2013-present) 95.9%
    6 Skoda Superb petrol (2015-present) 95.2%
    7 Audi A3 Saloon (2013-present) 93.9%
    8 Audi A4 petrol (2015-present) 93.7%
    9 Skoda Superb diesel (2015-present) 93.2%
    10 Volkswagen Passat (2015-present) 92.9%
    11 Ford Mondeo (2014-present) 92.6%
    12 Audi A4 diesel (2015-present) 91.9%

There are a few 2018 diesels with less than 10k km asking around 45k on carzone. There is a 2017 3.3 v6 petrol asking 51k also, it's around 69k brand new.

They’re dear enough new alright, just over 50 for the diesel but they come with pretty much everything as standard. A guy who was involved in the design of the Audi TT and the BMW M guy who is now with Hyundai and behind the i30N designed the Stinger.

As Bazz said, there’s a few 2017 petrols knocking around, a two year old one might be a slightly wiser buy in terms of depreciation but I would say they are a fun car because I am genuinely impressed by the one I have.
