They’re dear enough new alright, just over 50 for the diesel but they come with pretty much everything as standard. A guy who was involved in the design of the Audi TT and the BMW M guy who is now with Hyundai and behind the i30N designed the Stinger.

As Bazz said, there’s a few 2017 petrols knocking around, a two year old one might be a slightly wiser buy in terms of depreciation but I would say they are a fun car because I am genuinely impressed by the one I have. The engine is noisy when revving and not as refined as a BMW in that specific area but once it’s moving it’s grand. The headrests are the softest and most comfortable I’ve ever experienced!

I am finding the 2.2 plenty gutsy in the Sorento all considered ..... noisy at times though as you say, even by diesel terms.

The more I review hot hatches the more I feel I'd appreciate one again!

Jesus, maybe im old but that Honda is like something off pimp my ride.
Did they ever do anything so loud before?
I wouldn't be seen within a mile of it.

One of the main criticisms of it is that it's very much out there and the age profile of someone with the money to buy one isn't necessarily going to want that much attention. The handling though :pac:

I’m sure it’s an amazing drive but I couldn’t look at it on my driveway everyday.
What is the retail price of that car Mark?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,955 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

It’s brash but I like it ! I’d never buy one though

    Wow!
That’s savage money. I guessed early 40’s and thought that was too much.
What’s the ride like? I think the last one came in for serious criticism for its ride.
I’d definitely have the golf R over this.
I also think that Honda would be a magnet for the wrong sort of attention.

By all accounts golf R's are a magnet for the wrong sort of attention too.

I just could not like that brash styling but then again I'm probably not their target market. 53k is expensive but the last Type R model was not far off that price either here, not that that justifies it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,529 ✭✭✭MarkN

It’s a more pure performance experience than the R. The R is a decent all rounder, this is a bit like the last model Focus RS.

The Type R was designed before any of the normal Civics were developed so the Type R came first.

Ride is firm, tyres are thin, steering is sharp, brakes are class, difficult to get the power down in the wet even in 3rd, the tyres have 18,000kms on them and it’s a press car so no doubt it has been broken in well - that could be a factor in the grip. Gonna shoot a video tomorrow so hoping for dry weather so I can put the power down confidently.

I love the styling of it, even the non-type r's, brave but beautiful design

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,066 ✭✭✭Theboinkmaster

Maybe I'm old (38) but that's disgusting looking.

For that money I'd have an older BMW 6 series or porsche panamera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,157 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Hats off to Honda for having the courage to make the R "balls out", but I had one 2008 and loved and I wouldn't buy the latest.

Its a roadgoing track car. Its more extreme than the other hot hatches, which are practical day to day cars.

Its a step too far for me and for most I would suspect.

I'm just doing some online quotes with 123.ie for 2016 G11 7 series, as they allow you to click back and quickly change between models.

    For me it goes:

    730D M-Sport 255bhp: €1200
    740Li M-Sport 322bhp: €1060
    740e M-Sport 322bhp: €830
    750i M-Sport 443bhp: Won't quote

As usual, plucking figures out of the air.

VRT is also a farce due to the CO2 ratings:

    730D M-Sport 255bhp: €9770
    740Li M-Sport 322bhp: €21432
    740e M-Sport 322bhp: €8551
    750i M-Sport 443bhp: €23819

The prices of the cars are all within £5k of each other, yet this bloody country distorts the value and what vehicle you choose based on nonsensical VRT, insurance and motor tax.

I was leaning towards the 740Li, but the value is poor compared to the 740e, which is a compromised car I think.

Is there much of a saving over buying a similar car here, granted most here will be the 730d?

    For example:
    https://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=2088115&r=s.php%3Fm%3D10%26o%3D89%26r%3D2016%26pp%3D50%26g%3D0

A massive saving no, but a saving none the less.

This would be €4k less, direct from a BMW dealer with a years warranty.

    https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/201810051209047?location=Lincolnshire,%20UK&quoteref=27e60b61-8fca-430c-8d98-bc7ef35b7d14

And yes you're right, there isn't a single petrol for sale on Carzone, i've no interest in the 730d.

    Is there a 740d?
Would that not be a runner for you?
Any interest in something like a Mercedes s500?

That one in Glasgow is a December 2015 according to the advert so would get a 152 reg here, granted it probably has a few more options but if there is only a 4k saving over the 161 then it's not such a great deal to be honest imo.

Even in the UK 740i/750i are scarce enough, most G11s are diesel.

    740d M Sport here:

    What about a G30 540i? Too much of a come down from a 7er?

Diesel is out of the running altogether, it doesn't suit my short journeys coupled with the fact I really dislike them from a noise/refinement point of view; as good as the 6 cylinders are, there's not getting away from that agricultural idle.
S500s are savage alright, but they lack the sportiness i'm looking for.

That 730d was the first one I came across as an example, in general that same saving is there and even moreso the more you go up in price.

G30s don't do anything for my anymore, I liked them a lot at launch but instead of liking them more, i've really gone off the front end design, it looks dated to me. Also hunting for one with a 7 series spec is frustrating, neither of those 540s have comfort seats for example.

You're right about the lack of petrol 7s, I can't get over it. But i'm fully expecting a flood of them hitting the market in January once PCP deals are up.

This is essentially what i'm looking for in either 740/740e/750 guise around the £35k-£38k mark in January.

UK reg change is next March plus with Brexit coming into effect you might see some better value in what you're looking for then. Expect to be shafted however with VRT here so the best you can probably hope for is saving on the UK price and the depreciation over there.

Chaps what cars have Massage seats, i've decided I want back massages while driving in whatever I go next, spotted this but way out of budget, anyone if there in many Bmw's https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-7-series-m-sport-ivory-leather-massage-comfor/19992151

Lexus LS or Merc S Class perhaps? I'd imagine it would depend on the car as they are usually an option even on luxobarges.

Not being a fanboi here but there actually isn't an agricultural idle from them.

I stood beside a 730d on Sunday as it started up, sounded rough to me!
