I only have a extension lead in use where I want the modern placed. Would the installer be able to plug the ONT into a extension lead?

It can be used for power. Your choice what to do then.

Also, I'm assuming that the 14 day cooling off period is only active if the system is usable.
As phone has never and still isn't working via modem, I think I have a case.
