I’ve just put 30,000 Kms on mine in the last six months and I’ve averaged 25mpg. Lots of motorway driving and a good amount of backroad stuff too. They are thirsty cars when driven as intended. Fast thirsty fun though.

The general consensus is, if you have a company fuel card then the R is the car to have if you can get away with it!

I know of a guy who ran one as a company car for 2 years. Coincidentally I spotted it on the road today, filthy (he no longer has it himself).
He put up mental miles on it, I remember him telling me he was filling up every 2nd day! Nice when you have a fuel card.

The OH gets free fuel :( she's driving an Ibiza Cupra so it's not completely going to waste.

It is, damn thing is very economical lol, trust me, I know. :D

I know leon cupra uses same engine as Golf R, but just being front wheel drive, mpg shpuld be better.

There was a red R 161parked at work today and I really liked the look of it. Thats why I started checking it out. Unfortunately I cant afford to run such thing.

I have a fuel card, but i pay for it myself, handy to have and helps with budgeting. Always jealous of the lads that have one for free.

Thats actually very informative post, thank you.
I am doing 25k km a year. I dont know how much it is in old money, but I can do a 6.7l per 100km without full on granny mode with my baby cupra.
When pcp is up I plan on going 2ish year old leon cupra, but with when we talking about that age cars, there is not much price difference between cupra, gti and R. So doing my homework early.
Gtd would be out of the question. Owned only one diesel car in my life and it was my last one. Its just not my cup of tea.

I had to revise my sums on this, the GTi a week to run was €22, or €1,144 a year more than the GTD. Not a deal breaker by any means and i probably could have bought a GTi, but at the same time , good examples were making 4-5k more than i paid for a decent spec GTD. All the GTI's in my price range were early models with halogen headlights (a complete no) and mostly higher mileage.

I test drove a new Leon Cupra, and it was a lovely car but the numbers were silly, 5k down with the Fiesta and 570pm after that, our mortgage isn't much more than that and the wife bought an Ibiza FR on pcp this year too so didn't want to go down for that much. I'd say 30-32mpg is probably the best you can hope for in the Cupra. Overall the Golf is a better finished car imo.

Do you do much mileage? You'll average about 30mpg if your lucky. I do approx 30kms a year.

I did a comparison on just fuel costings between a R/GTi and GTD on the assumption that each did 30/35 and 48 mpg respectively.

The fuel cost for the R were €4,256, €3,648 GTi and €2,483 GTD.

So the difference in fuel from the GTD to the R was €34 a week and €22 to the GTi. I would be spending €82 a week in an R which would get tiresome pretty quickly.

Tax is always around €400 more on the R.

In the end I bought a GTD but I really wanted the R! Its also costing me around €20 a week less than my Fiesta ST was.

Not by much! My Cupra has averaged 30.05mpg over the last 18 months with a mixture of driving. I'm not one to hoon about the place either...I get slower as I get older!

My R does 30mpg religiously, has done since day one.

That was me in Galway in the filthy white R and I inherited it from him!
I fit it four times a week.
I also have to wash it every week!

No way, haha! I met you coming around the docks, by the harbour hotel.

How is it holding up the mileage? There must be a fair whack up on it?

180,000 kms. I got it from him in April with 147,000 on it.
It’s a bit rough around the edges but still goes like stink.
I live in Dublin but am in the west 2-3 days a week.

I’ve to change to something more sensible in January or February so I’m going to enjoy it while I can.
For anyone thinking of getting one, DO IT!

That's some mileage, your car was picked up a couple of days before I got mine.
I've 34k kms on mine for comparison lol.

Going to look at a GTD tomorrow with the discovery nav. Is app connect standard on it, not sure if it has it or not, if it doesnt can it be easily installed? What sort of cost am I talking?

Its from a main dealer so what are my chances of getting them to add it there and then?

You're not the guy I met at the first runway club day in the red R by any chance?

I called into the dealer last weekend to discuss a change for 2019. My pcp deal is due to expire sometime in Feb.

To move into a Golf with the same spec as mine (new 1.5TSi) and no contribution from me my monthly will increase by €123 to €413.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,539 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I'd hold out for the Mk8 at that rate.

What year is it? Mine is a March 2015 and I don't think I can add app connect but i'm open to correction

    Jan 2016

I know they upgraded the screens for MY 2016 so cars from late 15 onwards have larger screens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Ron Burgundy II

Yeah, I'm going to hold out for a year at least. My priority for 19 is getting the mortgage and new home sorted.

As a rough guide, if its newer than June 2015, then it can be activated. It'll have the newer generation (slightly larger) screen.

From what I have read it should be able to be activated as it has the voice button on the radio where the non upgrade able have a mute button but not certain on that.

Yeah, there's that confusion too. But virtually all Golf's (highline upwards) for the last 3-4 years have Discover Nav fitted, and that nav unit definitely can be app-connect enabled.

It’s hard to make comparisons without knowing the ins and outs of a deal but anyway to give something to compare with my sister was getting her 151 1.6tdi comfortline serviced in August and was offered a deal to go into a 181 1.6tdi comfortline with no deposit and a monthly payment increasing from roughly 320 to about 335 a month (I can’t remember the exact numbers but this would be very close).. Unfortunately for a number of reasons (unrelated to the car or deal) she wasn’t able to go for it at that time.
