Oh I don’t doubt he’ll win though the margin might not be as big as previously thought.

Thing is though a lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon and voting in protest or because they agree with Casey on Travellers and for no other reason.

And I just don’t understand what they hope to achieve or why they think he’s some Messiah who’s going to magically change things.

You mean like every other ceremonial only role that has changed the country ?

I think everyone realises that the president has no power and is a ceremonial role

Its one of the main reasons we have never voted out an incumbent president, we cant be arsed

I'm just imagining the worry that would set in with the government when they realise a large amount of people are not going along with what they want

The job is what you make of it - down have done very little, others like McAleese and her husband played a crucial role in the peace process in Northern Ireland.

You last statement is somewhat erroneous - this is only the second time in the history of the state where a sitting president has had to go to the electorate for a second term.

Probably not, your risk exposure is extremely low so would just enjoy it as entertainment.

The best price (current) laying Higgs is 1.06 (subject to commission) i.e. outlay 100 (risk) to (gain) just 6notes. You'd ideally want to wait for or target 1.20+ (set a bit like a stock stop-limit) at least, which would be a much more accurate estimate anyway.

Perhaps the best solution on this (single item) would be to look for a early cash-out (even at reduced). You're PTE is €250.50, so wait to be offered, or ask for just 100-125 notes.

// Correction: Best Higgs lay price is actually 1.23 (gain 23% if he looses) which is fair and accurate as of today, worth consideration, but again may be subject to commission.

Where are you getting the lay price odds? I have €5 on.

And have we ever voted one out?

Noone usually cares enough to even give the electorate the opportunity!

I, on the other hand, am not an idiot.

No, but apparently you're from the future.

Sorry should have given lay price for PC instead of Higgs, the risk liability exposure for PC is still too high to consider, ideally would want single figures.

    https://www.betfair.com/exchange/plus/politics/market/1.148019297

Maybe best to just keep it simple, and wait until early counting begins and see if live markets have anything attractive on Higgs. Assuming cash-out isn't being offered currently.

"Independent journalist". His wife must have a good job.

I don't know any travellers or tinkers as you call them but is your argument that all crime is committed by travellers? Also you think Peter Casey is your saviour?
You may want to get a grip on reality.
I do agree that anyone that does those crimes you mentioned deserves over 20 years or life in jail though.
Jimjim, read my post again, I never said all crime is committed by the tinkers. Please read it again slowly.

Everyone except the five candidates running against Higgins, it seems

When does the moratorium black out begin, because I'm beginning to smell a rat ref the complete and utter failure of any polling stats being released post 16th of Oct.

Would it be too cynical of me to perhaps suspect that Casey is polling a hell of a lot better than the 2% they had claimed (and keep regurgitating as "news" ever since), the media and the establishment are afraid of their shyte that Casey's votes will get momentum, and so - and with the embargo rapidly approaching, the polling numbers of the 16th is what we'll be left with?

If the social media platforms, radio text in programmes, and general consensus amongst people i talk with (during my daily work), are anything to go by....Casey has a serious amount of support out there.

Not to mention, the bookies odds.....

    I smell a rat.

It's like straight from the Donald Trump playbook.......

I was that interested in the Presidental Election up until a week or two ago and I'm still not unduly bothered by it really, considering that in real terms The President's function is to basically eat dinners for Ireland.

But, I find it interesting all the same, that people are queuing up on here to profess their support for Peter Casey, a man 99% of you couldn't have picked out of a lineup until about a fortnight ago.

And on the basis of what? A soundbite about travellers? That's all it takes for a lot of you to suddenly give a sht? Name another thing he said up until that point that was worth even a moment of anyone's attention? No-one cared up until then, but because he hit the buzzword bingo jackpot, suddenly the nuthouse that is After Hours is inundated with Caseyites. Pretty craven stuff if you ask me, you are all very easily swayed. And I'm willing to bet, that despite all the bluster that Casey is going to shock us all, most of you probably won't be bothered your arses voting. Too much effort, easier to talk crap on the Internet.

    Condescending drivel.

Many posters have explained their rationale for supporting Casey in this thread. You’ve jumped in here feet first with your insinuations.

He says it how it is and doesnt bow to enforced leftism like the rest (including the incumbent) do.
He's a business man, and would be a welcome change to the wastage of funds observed during the hobbit administration.

Personally I’ll support him to send a message to our politicians (all parties) so that maybe, just maybe those who work hard and are sick of funding a bloated welfare entitlement class will receive a political voice. Leo started the conversation but conveniently lost his voice somewhere along the way.

It’s also refreshing for someone to raise the traveller issue without fear of the (as subsequently seen) outraged mob accusations of hate, racism etc.

Call it a protest vote if you want but in fairness I’ve respect for Casey for opening the long overdue debate.

people are using the wholly ceremonial role of president as a chance to vote for the only public figure in my memory to voice opinions shared by many people about two sacred cows, opinions which are verboten in media circles.

it is so unusual to hear these opinions voiced unapologetically by a public figure that people find it refreshing.

are these vote grabbing populist soundbites from Casey? absolutely. But what are the rest of the candidates saying? Nothing bar the usual safe mealy mouthed media approved platitudes - dross that says nothing, calculated only to signal their virtue and not get themselves in trouble. Casey has gone a different route and that is enough for me to choose him out of a panel of uninspiring talking heads.

Michael D will still win on the basis that he's the safe incumbent and he hasn't made a show of himself in the last seven years.

Ye can dress up it any way ye like after the facts, but if Casey hadn't flew a few kites about travellers there wouldn't be much else for people to latch onto.
