Richard Bruton out; Joe McHugh in as new Minister for Education

Varadkar just announced it.

Four ministerial changes: Bruton to Communications, Canney becomes a Minister of State

What can we expect? An acknowledgement that aping the yellow pack English system and all its ridiculous bureaucracy and pointless meetings is unproductive stupidity on a stunning scale and the government is changing course, or just another politician who does what the same senior civil servants who got us into this mess advise him to do?

I won't hold my breath.

He only taught for three years though but did become a youth worker ... I'll hold my breath!!! I'll miss Richard

- a fine minister for education...all the reforms, equality for LPTs - there's so much he did I could be here all day!! He might be a bit more interested where he is.

Shur look, at this stage it's obvious the mandarins in the department are pushing the decoupling of state and education with the creation of middle management and school autonomy.

I think we will be waiting.
I will miss Bruton talking about ****ing 'stakeholders' in every discussion he has about education.

That ship has sailed. All we can hope for in that regard is that the failed experiment will be short lived and that it won’t lead to LC ‘reform’, which is already being threatened.

I really wouldn't hold your breath on that.......its a runaway train at this point imo

to further the analogy it will have to derail before it gets back on track. were talking 15/20 years before common sense gets back into the party.... if ever.

In fairness, we should hold judgement until we see how Joe gets on. At least he is a teacher in his own past and has experienced real life education.

Is this just soft talk for his first outing as Minister or is he the first Minister to say stop and think of teacher wellbeing? Other ministers felt wellbeing centred around the student and never mind the teacher who has to deal with more and more BS every year which if course causes stress as no one can answer a question honesty/with knowledge???

The new minister said he was one of the teachers who had to emigrate,good for him! If he has any cop on he will look closely at what his predecessor did which was sweet fanny adams as far as positive initiatives for teachers go,on the other hand he did countless things to annoy teachers,fcuk up the profession permanently ..............................................and in doing so we have moved SEVEN years down the road to a place where quite a few teachers (sorry I do not have the stats) are closer to retirement so I guess in another 6-7 years there will be even more teachers on the new lower unequal salary without any need for fighting this battle that no one seems to be winning,definitely not the lower paid teachers anyways!

If the minister has an iota of cop on he will gather all the over 50 yr old teachers and say to them " can you please,please,please retire,(we will enhance your pension by x years) and in doing so will create hundreds of jobs for inequal teachers who might then be able to go to the bank and get a mortgage,start a family and do just normal things rather than be fighting the employer the wholetime!

Of course this will never happen....the again Trump was never going to win the US election!!!!!!

Did that not happen a few years ago where teachers retired in February as they got some kind of handshake?

There is no way i will want to retire when I am 50 and would resent being forced to

Same here, I'm 45 and job sharing so not near enough, but dammit, I'd definitely go !

I like teaching but I've tons of things I'd like to do.

My fear is they'll cut contact time more to free up teachers to do the admin end . I just to teach.

Yes I totally agree, I still love my teaching (not admin).

I would fear of less contact time - am down one period for second year and probably the same for third year. Will also be down a month for those stupid CBAs. I said it before - I'd prefer to correct my second year summer exams than spend a month preparing for CBA that doesn't even carry a proper grade.
