Both of them? At the same time? Sounds like they are on the same infrastructure to me. Rookie mistake for a small company. Catastrophic for an ISP.

The standard 2 server DNS server setup isn't suitable for an ISP.  They would have multiple servers behind a load balancer, possibly not all in the same place. When the load balancer fails none of these multiple servers would be available. This is what I suspect happened as if a single DNS server went down there would be no disruption.
Yes, but they should have primary and secondary load balancers - two distinct pieces of hardware in different locations in front of multiple DNS servers. How can both of these fail at the same time?

The issue suggest to me that either they have only one load balancer, or all their load balancers and/or DNS servers are on the same infrastructure. A little worrying for an ISP.

Maybe you should ask them for a job :p

Amazingly, Eir Customer Care on Twitter are advising customers to change their DNS servers to the Google DNS servers (multiple messages in the last hour). Their own DNS server issues should be resolved, so there should be no need for this advice.

Either they have a rogue Customer Care agent, or they have no coordination internally on big issues. Those Eir Customer Care agents have probably never seen an Eir modem in their lives, so it's not their fault.

This isn't one isolated incident, the company is baldly broken.

Curious to know if the issue was related to the ICANN upgrade which kicked off on the 11th.

It's certainly not suitable for a major ISP that is building out essential services on an all-IP network. It's not like we just use the internet and IP networking to just do a bit of web browsing. It's core background infrastructure and should be as robust as the old PSTN phone network.

We're long past the days when the internet was just about providing people with web access. It's got a ton of core services hanging off it, and increasingly things like people's landlines, POS systems in shops taking cards, and all sorts of other things need access to solid ISPs.

In an Irish context, Eir remains the largest telecoms company and you'd expect from any of the big players here that they'd have a very robust network in place to avoid anything like this.

If you were to use this forum as an example almost every time that a rep says they have to contact another department to answer a question you can expect a two month wait time and to only partially get your question answered after that time.

Is this affecting webmail? Can't log in all weekend.

Mine came back earlier on the mobile and is gone again...

I assume this is what's going on, surely more ISPs would be out if it's global?

Follow up reports from ICANN suggest that the changes had less of an impact than expected.

Eir are perfectly capable of creating their own outages. :)

Broadband is working fine on the desktop, on a wired connection. The laptops internet connection is working fine, on wifi. But neither my playstation 4 or nintendo switch, can connect to the internet.I get an error message, saying that both machines aren't able to obtain an ip address from my modem.
Anyone having the above problem, a simple reboot of the modem did the trick for me.

Of course. A VPN is a tunnel to some other network. He wasn't using Eir if the VPN was connected

Depends on the router, but for me...

    1. Go to http://192.168.1.254/ (or type cmd and press enter, then type ipconfig /all look for your Default Gateway. Replace the numbers in my link with what you see.
    2. Log in (logins may be on your router, if you haven't changed them before), then go to the Internet tab
    3. Half way down under WAN-1 (or similar), you can click edit to change your DNS.
    4. Use 1.1.1.1 as primary, or 1.0.0.1 as secondary. These are open dns settings, and are much better then Eir's ones.

Just a general question but if someone could explain how to assign a static IP address to a device on a f2000 modem I would be grateful.

Yes he was tunneling to the express VPN network and using the express VPN DNS server which wasn't having issues. The Eir network was working just no DNS

You want your device to have a static local address?
    That's fairly staright forward

Login into the router on 192.168.1.254
On the top tab select "home network" then on the left select "lan interface" then you should see a "DHCP reservation" option.

"create a new static address" From the drop down menus select the IP you want it to have and select the name of the device.

Best thing to do then is restart the device and you should find the f2000 will always give that device the same IP.

As Tuxy said, but also just make sure you assign the particular device the IP address too or it will be in vain :)

My eir broadband isn’t working at all and my phone on eir mobile has limited or no broadband connection. I can’t get to any of the eir websites from another ISP (three). Am I alone?

Edit: When I ring 1901, it rings a few times and then hangs up.

    Hi everyone,

I'm very sorry for the loss of service over the weekend, we had a nationwide outage. I've had confirmation that this has now been fully resolved.

If any you are still having issues you can try these following steps as this has worked for others -
Enter 192.168.1.254 into your browser. Once you log in, look at the bottom menu that says Network Settings and in the Sub Menu click Home Networking, scroll to the bottom of the page and change the dns from Dynamic To Static and put in the following, 8.8.8.8 and the second one 8.8.4.4 and click save. You should then have internet again.

If this does not work and you are still experiencing issues, the best people to speak with is our support team on 1890 260 260. They'll be able to assist you further from there.

    Apologies for all inconvenience caused.

    Thanks

    Tracey
