He will have plenty of time to twiddle with his antenna in the boards.ie prison.

It does beg an interesting question though. With the availability of radio apps, Internet radio and TV boxes, does anyone still try to listen to the BBC on a radio?

Yes, to listen to live commentary on 5Live on the car radio.

When I switch to AM, I have three buttons programmed to 693, 909 and 990 KHz and I check which one is coming in clearest.

AM on the car radio is useless. I use the TuneIn app usually, but they don't broadcast the live matches. Sometimes 909 or 990 works, but if you're on the move it's bad.

Does BBC Radio app itself block 5live coverage as well, didnt think it did?

I listen to R4 LW regularly. Sure, I can get it via sat or stream in higher quality, but the comms set is just a pushbutton away.
Same goes for most of the radio stations I generally tune to during the course of the day - most of them are available via the 'net but I prefer the fact of plucking them out of the aether.

The antenna farm outside is the key.

The older the radio (at home or in the car) the better the MW / LW reception

Digital via Satellite or the net the only way to go for crystal vlear sound, can't stand the squawking and screeching of MW/LW. Hated that as a kid.

    I do.

BBC 4 LW and RTE 1 LW

( The newest wireless set that I have would be at least 25 years old )

Is this answer as interesting as the question ? :)
