How do I get BBC Radio in Dublin

I'm currently living in Malahide and have had some problems in relation to tuning BBC Radio stations. I lived and worked in Dundalk for years and got the stations there obviously.

I only have FM and MW, no LW or DAB.

    I'm only interested in Radio 2, 4 and 5Live.

What are the FM/MW frequencies for these?

Simplest way is on the internet otherwise you will most likely need an outside FM aerial.

I'm talking specifically about FM/MW radio.

What are the frequencies for the above named stations?

I don't think you'll get any of them too easily on FM in Dublin, unless you've got a Virgin Media point at your premises.

The MW frequencies are all here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/info/frequencies.shtml

They're all on satellite too, have you a dish set up?

I have Virgin Media and can get it on TV but I much prefer good old-fashioned FM. How do I get them on FM with VM?

What are the best FM/MW frequencies for R4 and 5Live in Malahide?

When I lived in Portmarnock, many years ago, I used to listen to 5 live on 909mw.

    I use TuneIn now...

Ideally you'd have a receiver with a coax input, and take a lead from a VM point. Failing that, some way of connecting a coax lead to the aerial...I use a crocodile clip. You might get something by coiling a good length of coax close to your aerial.

5live is on 95.1 here in Bray, no 2 or 4 though. R1 is on 99.7, R3 92.3, and WS 97.1. I don't know if these frequencies are valid across the network.

You should definitely be able to get what you want on MW, just try the freqs from the BBC site I linked, you might find that the best reception varies with weather and time of day.

Change of plan: I can get 5Live on MW 693/909. The signal is crap, any way to improve it?

Main question: how do I get R4 on MW?

198kHz Long Wave for BBC R4... On a good radio you'd nearly get it nationally.

    I only have MW.

There has to be a better frequency or improvement to 720 MW?

How do I get R4 on MW besides 720? Can I improve that signal?

Maybe make a loop antenna for better MW..? (I'm not being smart) it looks interesting, easy enough, from a cursory Google.

Randomly I was getting BBC Wales and Radio 4 in the car in Cork last week but they're gone again.

Also try 990 kHz for 5 Live.

Are there any other stations on MW that can be received from Malahide?

What way should I point the antenna for good signal on 720 MW BBC R4?

Get a Freesat box, trying to reliably receive via FM is a complete waste of time.

Using TuneIn for five live, they region block football matches, so that defeats me.

OP is now flagged as banned. Can't see any red cards on his recent posts, he must have posted something totally outrageous which was deleted by the mods and he got banned for his troubles.

He will have plenty of time to twiddle with his antenna in the boards.ie prison.

It does beg an interesting question though. With the availability of radio apps, Internet radio and TV boxes, does anyone still try to listen to the BBC on a radio?

Yes, to listen to live commentary on 5Live on the car radio.

When I switch to AM, I have three buttons programmed to 693, 909 and 990 KHz and I check which one is coming in clearest.

I never knew they were on 990 KHz thank you for that must put it on the preset as well

AM on the car radio is useless. I use the TuneIn app usually, but they don't broadcast the live matches. Sometimes 909 or 990 works, but if you're on the move it's bad.

Does BBC Radio app itself block 5live coverage as well, didnt think it did?

I listen to R4 LW regularly. Sure, I can get it via sat or stream in higher quality, but the comms set is just a pushbutton away.
Same goes for most of the radio stations I generally tune to during the course of the day - most of them are available via the 'net but I prefer the fact of plucking them out of the aether.

The older the radio (at home or in the car) the better the MW / LW reception

Digital via Satellite or the net the only way to go for crystal vlear sound, can't stand the squawking and screeching of MW/LW. Hated that as a kid.

    I do.

BBC 4 LW and RTE 1 LW

( The newest wireless set that I have would be at least 25 years old )

Is this answer as interesting as the question ? :)
