What would you get out of a full tank in a GTI by comparison?

I get 550km from 45 liters in my VRS 245 (Same engine as Gti PP).

I get 550km to a full tank in an R since switching to miles plus fuel.

550km for me in a GTI-P as well, on a usual morning/evening commute type of drive. Slightly spirited in parts, but normally just cruising in traffic between 60-80.

First day driving my car in nearly in a month today. Drove the wife's Leon FR a few times over the last few weeks and I nearly genuinely forgot how eager the Golf is to go. Shame on the M50 traffic being everywhere else today, but looking forward to giving it a proper clean before the end of the week and it's then getting it's third service on Saturday. Should be just below 25k km on it by the time it rolls onto their ramp. Barely broken in. :P

I tend to average 450km per tank in my Leon Cupra. I blame my Oh when she uses it once a week. Very heavy footed that one!

I actually got increased efficiency once I had the intake and the catback on it. Car can breath better and it doesn't have as many bottlenecks in the system which prevents it from feeling like it's bogged down at low RPM in certain gears (an issue I found pronounced after coming from the ST225). I'm not talking a huge amount, but according to the trip computer about 20-30km per tank, as I used to get about 520 out of it before them.

Bit of messing that I did in the R that I had!

Entertaining and well made review there.

The video actually does that paintjob more justice than the photos. Absolutely stunning looking car. Sounds like it's thirstier than I thought, especially considering the tank is 5 litres bigger than a standard Golf.

Great job on getting the sound of the exhaust through in the video. Most car reviews don't get it that right.

    That’s the sizzle! ;)

Nice review. Looks like you have a similar thought to me, and maybe others on here on it though. Whilst it's a supremely capable car, and hard to fault for performance/comfort/tech etc it just doesn't have the fizz. You seemed to have far more craic in the Hyundai.

Another nice video Mark... nice car too... :(

I also get the impression you had more craic in the Hyundai!

Every time I watch a review of the i30N a piece of me wishes i'd gone for one :pac:

Are your holding you drone to film some of those close ups? :D

    Nice review!

Ha yes, I've bought enough gear so until I could be arsed getting a gimbal for my Canon the drone is my steadicam.

It's a more grown up hatch, the price alone gives that away. It lacks the 'madness' but - VWs lack the madness generally speaking. The crazed inner nuts car is there but you just have to dig deeper to bring it out, it's a split personality car, the i30N always wants to show off. The R is a fantastic all rounder though, it's brutally quick.

Has anyone had an issue with the fuel gauge on these? I filled up the tank yesterday afternoon and did probably 150-180km, the needle for fuel hasn't moved from full. The trip computer tells me there's 580km worth of fuel in the tank too so that's not going down either.

Thinking about it now, I don't think the needle has ever gone down evenly. After a fill up it tended to stay up towards full for much longer than it should have, and then would have starting going down much quicker when it got to about half full.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

I think you'll find that's a lot down to the shape of the tank itself. The golf tends to show more full for longer and then drops more quickly, especially the second half of the tank.

See what it reads when you fire it up today, if it's still saying the same thing then you may have a stuck sensor.

Fuel probably in the filler neck too doesn't help here as you have to burn through it before the needle will start to move.

I see that with most cars. First quarter of the tank always seems to last much longer than the rest of it!

Previous cars yes, the R gauge moves leaving the filling station :D

Can anyone shed some light into the real difference between the standard GTI and the performance pack other than the increase of 15BHP? The performance pack models seem to be 3-4k more expensive than standard.

    The important items are
    1 Front differential
    2 Bigger brakes
    3 more power

The diff is the big item, I had both versions of mk7 and wouldn't buy a non PP if I was buying again as the traction is much better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,479 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Is the differential really necessary though? I don't accelerate through many turns on my commute so my driving is mostly straight roads. I've done 60kph on the 30kph M50 loops joining the motorway and I end up coming off the seat before the car would lose grip.

And the GTI have better tyres than my Turanza T001, which are great for standard driving.

I'm sure I'd appreciate it if I drove one, but it's a real kick in the balls to be eyeing a GTI then the price is suddenly €4k extra...

The brakes are straight from the R too.

I guess I'll post this here. The new turbo that was put in my Highline is quite loud in comparison to the broken one it replaced.

In the past I'd hear some quiet turbo whine at higher revs and with the bonnet open you'd hear a faint whoosh from the diverter valve when letting off. The new turbo is audibly sucking in air while accelerating normally, seems to be fluttering at times and I can also hear what seems to be it spinning, imagine if there was a small motor running when on boost and that noise is just there.

Is it normal for a turbo to be this loud? It seems like the sound is coming in the passenger air vent, almost as if it's missing some sound dampening or something but I don't believe this would be the case. Also am I right in saying that as this is a replacement turbo there's no warranty on this one if it goes? I'm a bit weary of the sounds it's making. I'm all for turbo noises, but the spinning noise is questionable and turbo flutter is a bad thing.

If that turbo fails, you're warranty isn't effected. If they had to fit another it'd still be covered.

    Did it fix your rattle?

Ah, I didn't think replacement parts would be covered. Thought I saw this mentioned recently.

Yeah the turbo fixed the rattle. Not sure what the story was as the guy I was dealing with wasn't around when I collected it. Interesting to go from being told it's just the high pressure fuel pump on those engines to the turbo being replaced. Happy that my car doesn't sound like a tractor leaving the estate at 6am now :)

Yes it really is, especially when you're trying to put 230/245bhp through two wheels. You say you don't accelerate through many turns and this is because it's a learned behaviour in you that you shouldn't/can't due to the consequences. But imagine if you could and that it not only didn't end up in understeer but it actually ended up in increased turn and grip. Then you'd know. :D

But as much as the Diff is worth it, I actually think the brakes are just as worth it, they're cracking on the PP/R.
