Monaghan GAA Thread

In the last few years in particular, the phrase "punching above their weight" has often been applied to Monaghan performances. While I know it can seem patronising in many situations (depending on the context and, crucially, the person using it!), I think it truly is a point that should be noted. I just wonder what Monaghan fans think of the phrase.

For me, the phrase does seem patronising and insulting at first. It would illicit a response of "Hang on, do you think we shouldn't be at this level, that we are pretenders?" which is perfectly understandable. However, it really is a genuine point to be taken into account when assessing Monaghan's fantastic progress in this decade.

Much is made of resources and population when referencing All Ireland contenders. It's impossible to enter a thread on Boards in the last few years without drawn-out arguments over the resource advantages of certain counties, mainly Dublin. Monaghan, a county whose population I wasn't fully aware of until recently, have defied this unspoken expectation in GAA recently. While I knew that Monaghan had a relatively small population, I wasn't aware of the scale of it. In a recent article, it mentioned Carlow, Longford and Leitrim as the counties with smaller populations than Monaghan. Not one of these counties is within reaching distance of an appearance in the Super 8s, let alone a Semi Final place. Therefore, Monaghan's achievements (past and present) are all the more impressive. Which county has done so much with such a small population in the modern era?

It also serves to remind other counties of their "luck" in having a large player and resource base for example. Two traditionally strong football counties, Cork and Meath, come to mind. Their demise has been disappointing in recent years. Natural decline is expected over time as player quality and team success fluctuates over time. With that said, much of the disarray (particularly in Cork) seems to exist at an organisational and structural level. A county rich in tradition and population alike should have no problem getting the basics right, a fact accentuated by Monaghan. Monaghan have been able to thrive on comparatively less.

Overall, I think "punching above their weight" can be viewed as a positive, despite the condescending, negative connotations associated with it recently. Monaghan get on with what they have, squeeze the best out of their players and forget the excuses. I am not trying to tempt fate or over-hype anyone here, merely acknowledging achievement and giving my thoughts on it. Onwards and upwards!

(Apologies for the lengthy post, it was written in good spirit - you are all perfectly entitled to ignore my ramblings!)

We do punch above our weight. The bigger the population the bigger the pool of players and Monaghan is small . These might be a “golden generation “ of players like the mid eighties so we’ll enjoy it in the moment. Sure we’ve been punching above our weight since 1888 :)

Tough day at the office yesterday and a lifetime of coulda-beens.

But when the dust settles the reality will dawn that we were not up to our best yesterday and we still almost pulled it off. I have no doubt that can be made to stand to us in the future. Bring on 2019!

We just never got going and still were 2 points up going into the stretch so it’s not all doom and gloom. Plus the minors in a sf bodes well for the next few years .
Just gutted about a game we could have won so its must have been awful in the dressing room. And I’m a bit hung over 😳

Looks like serious damage has been done to the buildings and pitch of Magheracloone GAA club. Large fissures have opened up in the grounds and some of the buldings have serious cracks in them due to settlement. The local school was also evacuated. Being blamed on a gypsum mine collapse in the area.

They will be mad keen to beat us but they would be whenever we met them. Hate the first round now!

3 all stars . You couldn't really argue with any of them.
I thought Karl O'Connell was outstanding this year

When you see Ryan Wylie's stats ya have to feel he should have got one!

Delighted the Cluxton fanboys and girls didn't rain on a great season for Beggan. Drew must have had the selectors scratching their heads too.
Mansie a shoe-in as always. And well done Karl-great year!

Scotstown through to meet ,Colraine i think, but did it the hardway
    Mixture of poor shooting
And poor shot selection kept Burren in it at half time when Scotstown should have been out of sight. Fair play to burren they responded in the second half to get to 2 points behind . With just 2 in it near the end Burren looked have won a penalty only for it to be a free out for Scotstown.
Also Scotstown got a point when one umpire waved it wide and the other waved his flag ?
    But overall worth their win.
Burren no 5 looking at a suspension for a headbutt and straight red card.

Was a good start. We got into the game well I thought and didn't panic.
Dublin's last line of defence - take the man out - cost them dear, but it also cost us what would probably have been scores.
Nice bit of new talent too.
Would be getting carried away but nice to win the opener.

Far too good to go down.

    Cracking contest yesterday.

There's simply no better forward in the game IMO than McManus.

Brendan Harrison was teak tight on him and he was still a tour de force.

    McCarron was very impressive too.

First team since i think Armagh in 2011 to not get relegated on 4 points in Div 1. Monaghan were much better in the league last year, just missed out on the final, maybe a hang over from reaching last summers All Ireland semi final?

How do people think Saturday will go ?
I’m expecting Monaghan to win by 3. Though games between them are usually right enough affairs

Big hurdle for Monaghan. Picking up tickets in morning but not confident, we need a decent start to the campaign.

Very disappointing, as it was coming out of Fermanagh game last year. Once again, hard to see us in Croker, but hope springs eternal.
A few players need to question their attitude and appetite after that. I think Malachy got the shape of the team and the motivation all wrong too.

Happy with Armagh. We need a big game to get us up to speed this year...or bust.

    Are we playing in Clones?

I would have preferred a handier game. I know it’s sh1t or bust at this stage but would still have liked a easier game in the hope we’d find some form.

With the resources we have, we just couldn't keep it going. This was coming.
A long break will do no harm in the long run imo. Sorry to see Malachy go but didn't expect him to stay either. He knows new blood is needed.
