Great performance. Ye have some fantastic players -Mcmanus, beggan, wylie, mone, the hughes. Beware of Fermanagh though - they will be waiting in the long grass.

Fermanagh have shocked fancied Monaghan teams in the past, but I'd have hoped that Monaghan would learn not to be complacent after last year!

Oh and shout out to the minors on beating Down after extra time . Pulled away in the 2nd half of ET

And one thing struck me as strange .
Theres no nets behind the goals . The squals during the warm up were mad

fantastic win today lads in omagh especially putting up a score of 1-18 very impressive

listening to the radio on the way home though from our game in cork today , cant help but think after 11 years since that game against kerry and two ulster titles later the media see yourselves as some sort of weaker county

they way monaghan have run there underage and senior structures over the last number of years has been excellent especially at club level and the turn over of players in that time has been impressive

in my opinion ye are the strongest team in ulster at the moment but if it was up to the media at the moment no one would know  while everyone has been worrying about dublin and money ect , monaghan have kept there heads down and worked hard year on year in fairness , if it was'nt for yer mental supporters:eek:... i would go so far and call ye a credit to the gaa ....but i wont:D

Well , any reports from Carrick-on-Shannon today . It sounded like a contest for the first 30 or so .

Was at it. Leitrim gave it a real go in the 1st 20 mins. Should have had 2 goals. Monaghan weakness exposed again by teams running straight at them. They haven't corrected this and good teams will beat them. Ryan mcanapsie had a good game and was industrious. Pulled away in the second half and leitrim tired.
2 issues for me from yesterday: Connor McManus was poor yesterday and to be honest hasn't played well consistently over the last couple of years. I know people say it's only leitrim but his attitude is wrong. We're all hoping he's saving himself for bigger matches but I'm not convinced.
Secondly where was Kieran Hughes? Is he injured? Big loss for the bigger games. Drew wylie didn't play yesterday, appeared to have picked up a knock but saw him and vinny Corey going through their paces with the physio after the game.
After the fermanagh game I just don't trust that monaghan will get far this year. Their strategy and style of play hasn't changed much since last year. It's very predictable slow labouring play.
I hope I'm wrong but we'll struggle if we get to the super 8s.

I agree . We ‘re too lateral at times and don’t seem to be incisive enough at times , But apart from Dublin I’d respect rather than fear any other team .

Well super 8s reached , handily enough. But for some poor shots on goal and a few good saves from the Laois keeper it would have been put to bed alot earlier. We were a bit sloppy in the 2nd half , but job done :)

    Yep. Was there today.
I would be a bit worried about fatigue with some of them. Some nice link up play at times today, but some wasteful stuff too.
Mansie in full flow and on target is a thing of beauty!

Yeah , had loads of goal chances and didn’t convert, which is a worry looking ahead, though today’s game never felt at risk even though Laois got it back to 4
Laois could have been down to 14 with that boot into the ball when Walsh ( I think) was picking it up in the first half . Good Monaghan crowd there too .

    8 or 9 thousand?

Know many who didn't go though.

How would ye expect to have any luck when ye were constantly throwing in an extra ball to disrupt play.

If these culprits are not found and banned from all your games I will have no respect for Monaghan.

Eh, it was happening to both goalies yesterday. Beggan had to kick them off the pitch too.

It amazes me the amount of people who are repeating this myth, they must all be just listening to the Kerry media today. Go back and watch the game. Happened for both keepers, there's no netting behind the goals in Clones and noone was sitting there to catch the ball. So after a shot, the ball would bounce back out onto the field.

It happened Monaghan twice last year in big games. In the Athletic Grounds v Down and in Carlow in the qualifiers. It didn't suit Monaghan's kickout strategy in either case. In the usual way of these things, it has only become an issue because Kerry were playing, even though as pointed out, it affected both teams.......

For the record the ball was no way near the Kerry goal line when a second ball arrived on the field, the referee chose to ignore it and Kerry went down the field and scored their goal.

Congrats. Deservedly top the group. Hope ye go on and win it now.

Not much between Monaghan and either Donegall or Tyrone, except both of them have done it on the big stage in recent memory. Im not sure how many, if any? , actually were part of those teams but they surely will start as favorites.
Great to see that support though, again and again.

Well done on today, silenced all the doubters questioning Monaghan's ability to bounce back and to take their semi-final place. Strong performance, didn't see the game but any day that you win by double scores is undoubtedly a good day! Keep it up now lads, would love nothing more than to see ye push on and take Sam. Long way to go but nothing is impossible!

Minors and seniors in Croker next Sunday! Who would have thought it after trudging out of Omagh all those days ago.

So proud of that days work today in Salthill.

In the last few years in particular, the phrase "punching above their weight" has often been applied to Monaghan performances. While I know it can seem patronising in many situations (depending on the context and, crucially, the person using it!), I think it truly is a point that should be noted. I just wonder what Monaghan fans think of the phrase.

For me, the phrase does seem patronising and insulting at first. It would illicit a response of "Hang on, do you think we shouldn't be at this level, that we are pretenders?" which is perfectly understandable. However, it really is a genuine point to be taken into account when assessing Monaghan's fantastic progress in this decade.

Much is made of resources and population when referencing All Ireland contenders. It's impossible to enter a thread on Boards in the last few years without drawn-out arguments over the resource advantages of certain counties, mainly Dublin. Monaghan, a county whose population I wasn't fully aware of until recently, have defied this unspoken expectation in GAA recently. While I knew that Monaghan had a relatively small population, I wasn't aware of the scale of it. In a recent article, it mentioned Carlow, Longford and Leitrim as the counties with smaller populations than Monaghan. Not one of these counties is within reaching distance of an appearance in the Super 8s, let alone a Semi Final place. Therefore, Monaghan's achievements (past and present) are all the more impressive. Which county has done so much with such a small population in the modern era?

It also serves to remind other counties of their "luck" in having a large player and resource base for example. Two traditionally strong football counties, Cork and Meath, come to mind. Their demise has been disappointing in recent years. Natural decline is expected over time as player quality and team success fluctuates over time. With that said, much of the disarray (particularly in Cork) seems to exist at an organisational and structural level. A county rich in tradition and population alike should have no problem getting the basics right, a fact accentuated by Monaghan. Monaghan have been able to thrive on comparatively less.

Overall, I think "punching above their weight" can be viewed as a positive, despite the condescending, negative connotations associated with it recently. Monaghan get on with what they have, squeeze the best out of their players and forget the excuses. I am not trying to tempt fate or over-hype anyone here, merely acknowledging achievement and giving my thoughts on it. Onwards and upwards!

(Apologies for the lengthy post, it was written in good spirit - you are all perfectly entitled to ignore my ramblings!)

'Punching above our weight' would only really be reflective as a very broad overview of monaghan performances over the last decade or more. Ive been attending Monaghan matches for over 20 years now and there has been plenty of bad days out. It's only since they made themselves regular division 1 participants that the talent has been able to flourish and improve. when I step back to consider the population size, resources etc then it makes the recent success more special.

A bigger county can only put 15 men on the field, so if your own 15 are well trained, a good system in place and good skill levels then anything is achievable. The blanket defence has been around a good few years however this year the lads have really honed it to perfection. Since the first game of the year the hunger in defending has been outstanding. Hassling and chasing the opposition and not giving them an inch of space. The pundits and highlights never show how important this is in winning a match. Each turnover inside the 45 and each time a forward is pressured into kicking a wide is the same as us scoring a point at the other end.

I'm amazed at how many times people comments after Monaghans victories focus on how the opposition played ****e or never really turned up today. True it's a nightmare to play against Monaghan's system but their tactics and management deserve credit for what they've achieved.

However I'm not getting carried away. Will we win an all-ireland in my lifetime? Maybe not but we'll damn sure try. Stranger things have happened. We're a shorter price than Leicester to won the league or even Portugal to wine the euros. Bit good teams come and go. We could be back playing division 3 in a few years time so well enjoy the moment and hope for the best.

I really hope Monaghan go on and win the semi final now, they deserve an all ireland final appearance out of their perfomances over the last decade and to be honest I'd give them a better chance against Dublin than Tyrone as I think having a great forward like Conor McManus always gives you a chance if he hits top form, Tyrone don't have an individual talent like him on their team.
