This and Castlevania on the same day, yet won't get to start watching until Sunday night at the earliest

Looks like 10 episodes for this

After 30 minutes of the first episode, I'm out.

"Women should rule the world", sexual assault, "take down the white patriarchy", a "daughters of black panther" club...

I don't need any of that crap in a show about a teenage witch.

Great Johnny, you got the liberal "I'll watch it because it has those things" response. Congrats.

I have extremely liberal views, and I'd watch plenty of films and TV series with those themes, but there's absolutely no need to have those in this show, about a teenage witch. They do not add to the main plot at all.

Oh yeah, Sabrina has a pansexual, mixed race cousin too, because why not.

It's sitting on 88% from 48 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, 77 from 21 critics on MetaCritic and 8.9/10 from 261 reviews on IMDB.

No offense to Frank, but with strong reviews overall, I plan to watch it myself and form my own opinion rather than being dissuaded by one single critical review on Boards. :o

Was looking forward to this with the reviews but I am now concerned after Frank's post.

Nothing worse than a preachy culture show when there is no need for it.

    Will try it out though

Honestly not trying to dissuade anyone. I was excited to binge it this weekend, but I couldn't stomach much of it.

If you generally like the CW network stuff, like Riverdale and the Arrowverse shows, you probably will like this too.

Great Johnny, you got the liberal "I'll watch it because it has those things" response. Congrats.

While I do confess to being a touch glib in that response, I’d definitely be of the opinion that a show about a teenage witch can easily address these sort of issues - don’t see why they’d be precluded because of the central conceit. Whether they’re handled organically, elegantly or badly... well that’s another question!

Anyway, I am curious to give this a watch. Sabrina was a frequent kids TV feature when I was a kid, although it was hardly ever particularly high-quality programming. I am certainly interested to see a more grown-up (or at least adolescent) spin on the character and whether it works at all.

Just watched first two episodes, I thought it was very decent and ill be back for more over the weekend.

As someone else who watched the original, I'm definitely wondering how I'll find the difference here (I haven't read the comics). Helps also that they got a strong actress in the lead.

With respect to other areas - many witch stories have always incorporated strong elements of feminism and matriarchy. They've always had an element of empowerment so it's certainly in keeping to have it in the show. All that matters is the degree but the themes themselves are certainly in bounds.

I did feel as though you thought I was being anti-progressive. I'm not.

As someone who also watched Madeline's Madeline this see week, I wouldn't think this show would be your cup of tea at all. I would think you seek out things slightly more intellectual, like I do.

This show is nothing like the 90s version.

There seems to outrage here for the sake of outrage.
A show about witch's has feminist undertones, shocker!

I don't think at any point it's too "on the nose"
The sexual assault plot is poignant and important as it's one of the main reasons Sabrina chooses to stay behind, unselfishly for her friends.

I loved the original tv series back in the day. Watched the first 2 episodes last night and will continue this evening. I get an early Buffy vibe off it. I like the characters so far and the lead who’s name I can’t remember fits well.

As to the whole PC element that was referred to earlier, I see it as character development so far. That bit was about 5 minutes of the whole first 2 episodes. No point overreacting to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,881 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

I watched the first episode and found it ok however I am finding the cadence of her speech very annoying.

On episode 3 atm I know there completely different genres but I found the other old show more entertaining just cause it was so silly and fun and didn’t take itself seriously.

This thing is soo dreary and unfun to me it seems more suited to a 2hour movie than 10 hour episodes of this. The women’s pc thing was annoying and not a good start to Sabrina’s character.

It defiantly feels like it’s trying to be Harry Potter imo

Or its an accurate recreation of the comic..

Watched 2 episodes of it, but won't watch any more. Perhaps I'm not the target audience, but somehow it felt both darker and more juvenile/teen angsty than the original TV show which may sound an odd statement.

The original was obviously a kids show but adults could still enjoy it, this feels like a teen girls show that adults won't really enjoy!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,437 ✭✭✭biggebruv

Made it to episode 4 and decided it’s not for me gone from the list bye bye Sabrina

I am quite enjoying it :o

Interesting that it has some crossover with Riverdale, they've mentioned it a couple times and apparently there will be a crossover ep or something.
eta: Didn't realise they're in the same comics universe - mystery solved!

Some fun quirky stuff in there twisting the usual phrases around like unholy matrimony and all that.
I'm a sucker for anachronism in shows when done well like gotham and riverdale, and this is another one to add to the mix. And I allllways will love michelle gomez after seeing her as missy!! all the actors are solid. your man the cousin is brilliant

Six episodes in and loving it. Needs more Salem is my only criticism so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭ArthurG

Going through this a bit slower than planned over the long weekend, but i have found it get a lot darker around episode 6/7.
The uncle upstairs was reminiscent of It, and the whole dream nightmare scenario was pretty gruesome
    .

Only a few episodes left, not quite sure where it will end up, but going to stick with it. I like that its not doing a 'monster of the week' type thing, hopefully there is a bigger story arc that will continue into the next season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,951 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

gave it a chance and watched the first two episodes last night. Not too bad at all, and will keep watching I think. Much darker than I thought it would be.

Just finished ep5 " dreams in the witch house". Its just got a lot darker.. ill see it out to the end at this stage. Im liking it so far.

The blurring is sooooo annoying. I don’t mind it being darker but I can not watch it at all, it’s making my head hurt :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,866 ✭✭✭Pentecost

I’ll find it hard to accept that young Sally Draper is, to use the Daily Mail parlance, “all grown up”, but I’ll give this a go. Riverdale, whilst ridiculous, is a guilty pleasure of mine so if it’s like that I’ll probably keep watching.

Have watched the first two episodes, I think it's excellent so far :)

I'm now seven episodes in and tbh I feel like it's plodding along. Perfectly watchable, but nothing to get too excited about either. Am I alone? I'll watch it to the end though, hoping it finishes strongly.

My thoughts exactly.8 eps in now. Noting spectacular, but decent enough.

Yeah, happy sitting watching it but no great difficulty finishing an episode and switching to something else.

Why are so many shows these days promoting witchcraft? Seems like some sort of agenda at play here.

So I finished the series. It finished quite strongly as I'd hoped, in fact I thought episode 9 was probably the best of the lot. I was a little disappointed that
the 13 witches and the guy on the horse didn't so more damage, it felt like a bit of a damp squib
. So what do we conclude from the finale
and Sabrina joining forces with the weird sisters, is she basically evil now or what?!

All in all I thought CAOB was an enjoyable, if not amazing series, and I'd certainly watch a second series.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,067 ✭✭✭368100

I thought episode 10 was the best, you're right....a strong finish. Especially liked Michelle Gomez's pieces....she's brill.

Final episode to watch later tonight. Actually looking forward to it. Have enjoyed the characters after all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭Aisling(",)

I've just finished the first series and I am a fan!

I really enjoyed Ambrose and Hilda, they're my favourite.
I'd enjoy more Salem time but read that Kiernan Shipka is allergic to cats so I get why he's more of a side piece.
Aunt Zelda had some great development and I warmed to her a lot in episode 9 and 10.

Overall I'm happy. Love the dark tone of the show and felt the social issues ( feminism, transgenderism) were handled well and not shoved in our faces but presented in a natural manner.

Loved to hate Father Blackwood and the weird sisters.

I like the set up for season 2
Aunt Zelda hiding the baby, Sabrina embracing the path of night, Lilith helping Sabrina while still aware she may have to murder her as a rival, plus hopefully a bit of teenage drama with Harvey and Nick both trying to win over Sabrina

One question though, why does the dark lord want Sabrina so badly? Surely there are loads of random witches about considering early on we see the
murdered warlock who wasnt in a coven, the guy with the iguana who kind of came to nothing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,683 ✭✭✭Glebee

Finished up Season 1 last night. Overall I enjoyed enjoyed my time with Sabrina and Co. Its not the most taxing of TV programs and cant be taken too seriously. Will defo watch season 2 when it releases next year.
    Loved the closing wink.

Why are so many shows these days promoting witchcraft? Seems like some sort of agenda at play here.

it goes through phases in the late 90's and early 00's we had Charmed, and The Craft, and Buffy which though it was't the main focus of the story still loved a bit of the aul dark arts. It's just always popular.

I really enjoyed Sabrina, I liked the tone and overall look of it, I loved the original as a teen, but I really enjoy the darker more grown up aspect to this one.

I agree with previous posters that more could have been done with
the 13 witches brought back from the dead, and the covenless warlock who was murdered
those things aside thought it was great and will definitely watch season 2
