    Who was the most high profile pay driver to actually win a race? Maldonado? High profile for all the wrong reasons that is.

    In recent years, yep probably Maldonado. Of all time, Niki Lauda.

    It could also be Fernando Alonso or Mark Webber. They were both pay drivers at Minardi.

    Mercedes paid for Schumacher to get his first drive with Jordan.

    Pay drivers aren’t as straight forward as they seem. The ones who turn out to be good it’s forgotten they paid for their drive. So people remember Ericsson and Stroll as pay drivers

    You make a good point, last year the Williams car scored points in 17 of 20 races, does that qualify as points in almost every race ? In race results it was 13-6 to Massa, he destroyed him alright.....
    Massa had 14 years F1 experience and Stroll was a rookie, it's not normal for a rookie to beat a much more experienced teammate.

    Almost half of Stroll's points came from a single result, where he would have been beaten by Massa but for his mechanical. My point stands, as in points are not an accurate reflection of how poorly Stroll did against old man Massa.

    If Stroll matches or beats Perez then I'll eat my words, but all signs at the moment point to him being one of the weakest drivers on the grid.

    Is "rookie" Sirotkin not outqualifying Stroll? Think I heard that in commenatary (which really suprised me tbh).*

    *this was a few races ago so may have corrected itself.

    Yeah, until very recently he was anyway. Last year he was beaten 17-2 by Massa, averaging more than 6 tenths behind. That's twice the gap that Alonso had to Vandoorne.

    Did Ocon match or beat Perez in his rookie season ? Edit: fixed typo, not Stroll but Perez
    Did Ocon finish ahead of Perez in more races over the course of that season ?

    I'll save you the bother of looking it up, the answer is the same for both. No.

    And that's not to mention that Perez is just a "mediocre pay driver" according to some on here, or that Ocon had a 9 race head start to his "rookie" season.

    Stroll is just as deserving of a chance based on his junior career and F1 results achieved, as other drivers like Ocon, Gasly, etc;

    If I remember correctly Hamilton and Alonso finished level on points, same amount of wins, Hamilton had one extra second or third place over Fernando so finished ahead in the title race.

    When was the last time a rookie beat his defending champion team mate?

    Somewhere in the 50s I guess

    Not sure what you mean by this. Ocon beat Stroll last year, although I wouldn't compare since they were in two different cars..

    He averaged less than a tenth behind him in qualifying and overall was almost a match for Perez.

    I'd have rated him at least as good as Massa last year.

    I disagree. He got his arse absolutely handed to him by an average driver last year and now he's struggling to beat a rookie who is also only in F1 because he brought a big fat cheque.

    Assuming that Stroll and Perez spend next season together, I'll give you €20 if Stroll averages lass than a tenth of a second to Perez in qualifying. That's not even a bet. I'll just give it to you! :)

    This deal between Sky & Channel 4 for F1 only lasts one year for 2019. It's not a great deal by any means but it's better than nothing.

    What will happen after that if all of those races are finished by next season?

    Will this deal be renewed with Channel 4 on a yearly basis until the current Sky deal is finished before 2025 or not?

    It will become very painful for F1 fans who want to continue seeing their race coverage live from 2020 onwards if these races become exclusive on Pay TV via Sky Sports F1. The F1 coverage on Channel 4 has been great so far with great analysis on how the title race has been going on for this year. But getting less live races for this new deal from next year is quite a surprise in not getting the same level of races that are provided in their current rights deal.

    I would love to see the current Channel 4 team in place to continue presenting the coverage on that channel.

    People living here will be at a loss as they can no longer see live F1 races on Eir Sports 1 from next year. If they want to continue watching all of them live. They have to watch them exclusively on Sky Sports F1 until their current contract ends before 2025.

    I'm not renewing my Sky f1 subscription after November, getting really sick of them now, I only watch it because Brundle is a fantastic commentator/analyst.

    So there will be no more "it's lights out and away we go" for me thank god :D

    Not sure what you mean by this. Ocon beat Stroll last year, although I wouldn't compare since they were in two different cars..

    Apologies that was a typo, question should have read, did Ocon match or beat Perez in his rookie season. Answer was no by the way.
    He averaged less than a tenth behind him in qualifying and overall was almost a match for Perez.

    Almost, behind, qualifying. Three key words in that sentence,
    Almost = he wasn't a match
    Behind = he was slower
    Qualifying = no points

    Talking about race results because that's what matters most. That's what determines finishing order, championship position and prize money.
    I disagree. He got his arse absolutely handed to him by an average driver last year and now he's struggling to beat a rookie who is also only in F1 because he brought a big fat cheque.

    I think you're wrong, I think you don't like Stroll and his performance is irrelevant as far your opinion of him goes.
    Assuming that Stroll and Perez spend next season together, I'll give you €20 if Stroll averages lass than a tenth of a second to Perez in qualifying. That's not even a bet. I'll just give it to you! :)

    Keep your money or give it to a charity, I don't think Stroll will beat Perez if they were teammates because I rate Perez higher. And even if I did I would take your offer, qualifying is just one aspect of a race weekend, an important one but not the most important, because you get 0 points for being quick over a single lap.

    I just watch Sky F1 online for free, it's worked for me without any issues since 2015. There may be a subreddit where where you can post links to where you are watching it and people can upvote or downvote each source depending on it's quality, popups, etc.

    I'd rather watch the highlights on C4 than put up with the S** crowd live.
    Except for M Brundle, respect there.

    That was an offer that only lasted the first season of F1, if you've maintained your subscription since you're essentially "grandfathered" into that offer. Any new customer has to purchase Sky Sports to get Sky Sports F1.
    Its also available on EIR, a pay for channel I know.

    Yes. Regardless of what happens Channel 4 highlights next year, Eir Sports will not be showing live F1 races.

    This too shall pass.

    Ms

    I am surprised there is no thread started for the Singapore race yet. Is Harika away from the net as its not like him. I could start one but it would not be as good as his threads.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

    It is shortsighted of F1 to go this way and, if I can see them live i still will watch them live, but I hate to say it, a part of me is thinking I might be better off just watching highlights from next year. Good races with good racing has gotten to be so infrequent in recent years that, never mind spending my money for the privilege of being bored, I'm finding it harder to justify spending a couple of hours of my time at the weekend on them.

    Bernie Ecclestone signed the deal and left with his huge fee for facilitating the deal.

    The new owners, Liberty are totally against it but have said they rather just see it out than break the contract and face being sued. Liberty have said they will make F1 TV available in every country as soon as the deals blocking it currently expire, so Sky won't have the option of exclusivity on any race when it comes to negotiating the next deal.

    Bernie made sure to collect his 200mil for passing go on his last lap around the board even if that did mean signing terrible deal as long as he got his payout, and what does he care now, nobody can touch him.

    No wonder so many viewers move towards alternative viewing options with such deals, you can't blame people at all, I'm even starting to look into these alternatives
