So, I had a torrid time with the above of late.

In desperation, I engaged in an unstructured frenzy of cache and data deletion from a bucket of apps........and the thing started working again.

Reading up on the code it seems that I as was lucky compared to some.

Has anyone else had a similar issue & if so do you know what you did to resolve it ?

@0lddog Maybe try updating Google Play Services and Play Store from apkmirror!

Thanks, Corkie. In fact it started working again after I "engaged in an unstructured frenzy of cache and data deletion from a bucket of apps".

Purpose of post was to see if others had experience of this & if so what had they managed to piece together with regard to cause & cure

All this is pure gobbledygook . Have you been messing with the phone unlocking bootloaders / flashing roms / debloating ?

Leave your RN5 as is and it works perfectly .

    uninstall/re-install google for maximum service

No roms or bloatware (the only thing I have is Nova Launcher). The last thing I changed was to update MIUI to 9.6. Apparently it's been happening a lot in the last month to other users. Common solution is to clear the cache and data from the google app, but there's no specific google app, so maybe I need to clear it from all my Google apps?

There is actually a Google app but interestingly it doesn't seem to show up in the installed app list. If you go to your app drawer on Nova Launcher you'll see an app called Google. Long press on it and it should give you a pop-up menu. At the top of that there will be an i symbol. Click that and you should be able to force stop, clear cache etc

Have the same issue since the last update.

Excluding the Google app from the battery saver should fix the Google has stopped issue according to XDA.

I have no idea if it's related but I was having trouble with my Beautiful Widgets clock not keeping the time updated and I followed the steps in the below video and it worked perfectly after, don't forget to reboot. Doing the same with the Google app may help

I did that when I got the Note 4. My widgets, including Beautiful Widgets, all work perfectly. But Google stops once in a while.

They are not the same device: -

    Redmi Note 5: - https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/specs/redminote5
    Redmi 5 Plus: - https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/wiki/specs/redmi5plus

Redmi Note 5 is the better device than the plus and is better than RN4X (But you should look at Global RN4, without the X if your going for that, probably hard to get as not being made anymore).

Comparing to Mi A2/lTE, your best checking youtube comparison, has the benefit of stock android over MIUI.

Thanks. I thought the RN4x was an upgrade from the RN4 going by this Gsmarena buyers guide
    https://m.gsmarena.com/smartphone_buyers_guide_2018_january-review-1704p3.php

A quote from the Gsmarena article
"The Redmi Note 4X has a lot going for it - a decent 5.5-inch display, efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset, serviceable camera, and a beefy 4,100mAh battery. Frankly, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one to every casual user out there. It is a truly versatile device.

Just be sure to opt for the Note 4X, over the regular Note 4, since the price difference isn't significant at all, while the former offers a lot more network bands"

GSMarena has been know to be wrong with there listing.

Snapdragon RN4 and RN4X are practically then same device, just for different markets.

The global snapdragon variation has more bands etc, and there various version for both so check the site listings if ordering.

    Redmi Note 4/4X (SD625)

    Redmi Note 4/4X (Helio X20)

Stay clear of the MediaTek version. So the site may have been comparing between the processor versions.

It is a safe site to Order from but they only have the RN4X in stock, global rom but not Global variation, so lacking Band 20.

Here is the listing for the RN4, Global variation with supported bands.

Genuine question, how is stock android considered a benefit? I'm loving MIUI. Much prefer it than stock android.

Genuine question, how is stock android considered a benefit? I'm loving MIUI. Much prefer it than stock android.

Out of the box, it has an app drawer, smaller memory footprint and less aggressive memory management. On MIUI apps like Whatsapp and Viber often get closed by the OS so messages don't come through on time. It's all fixable if you know what's happening, but frustrating if you don't know what's going on.

I have no problems with MIUI & I can't see the need to debloat. My Note 4 runs really well & there's stacks of memory. My previous phone was a Google Nexus, so pure Android, but it wouldn't be a priority in my next phone

    Read the OP again.

RN5 Pro is only available in India.
There is no version called RN5 AI even with some sites labeling it such.

The Honorbuy Version linked is the Redmi Note 5 (with) AI Dual Camera. That is where some sites get the AI part from, the with is usually dropped in screenshots and on some sites.

Great stuff, at least I know I have the right phone. I did read the first post but with all the similar names I got confused. Thanks very much for your help. I would have ended up ordering the wrong one otherwise.

Btw should I check for the whyred codename when buying from sites.

Would it be better to get the Redmi Note 4 if it was available.

They're genuine as far as I know but you pay a hefty premium on phones that can be ordered from EU Warehouses of Chinese sellers.
