Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Curious to get views of wider gaa fans.....will this man be missed after his 37 years.......it’s Joanne Cantwell from next season onwards I believe

    Yes, definitely rather see him remain. Cantwell is good but there's something rather unlikeable about her.

    Up until the Mid 2000s he was the best sports presenter RTE had. Excellent pro and completely unflappable. Enthusiasm and knowledge for the role was second to none.

    Though he was still decent he tended to veer away from anything remotely controversial towards the end and the pundits shouted over him for a finish. Darragh Moloney as match presenter in soccer has been far more impressive.I would have him as host any time a Dublin game isn't on.

    I agree with what the two previous posters have said; Lyster is a consummate pro, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. He came across as a very nice guy too.

    Best of luck to Joanne Cantwell. Almost impossible boots to fill, but I hope she is given time to do so.

    Really good presenter, very easy to like and no bull**** with him however he tolerated too much crap from Brolly over the years.

    Whatever about pundits in general speaking nonsense he should have nipped Joe Brolly's downright bad manners and sneeriness in the bud fairly early on but he did nothing to stop him.He failed to facilitate reasonable debate and just allowed him to interrupt everyone else all the time.

    I could put up with Spillane and O'Rourke but Brolly on TV was really off putting and the reason I never bothered with the pre and post game stuff for the last 6 or 7 years.

    If RTE have any sense they shoudl retire the 3 main football funidts and bring in some fresh punidts to work with Joanne Cantwell.

    Wow that's a long innings, goes back before my time following GAA. Seems a bit strange now that they would make a guy their main GAA host at such a young age, but I guess there wouldn't have been a 'pool' of presenters to pick from back then, a rookie would have a better chance of being thrown in right at the top than now...

    Will I miss him? Yes. I will. He was a huge part of the tradition that is the GAA. How could you not miss him - as in notice that he isn't there any more - when he is gone?

    But like the GAA, RTE has a lot of traditions that are both good and bad. It doesn't always follow that they will all be missed to the same degree, when they go.

    He seemed like a genuinley nice and decent person. You have to give him kudos for that, especially as we are in the era of click bait social media journalism, where it's all about incendiary articles, bull$hit claims and getting cheap digs in to get notoriety.

    However, he he made absolutley no effort to check Brolly's out and out rudeness. That was a massive, massive failing that just can't be over looked imo. It spoilt too many shows. Last nights evening panel discussion was a very refreshing glimpse of how good the show can be, when they have recently retired or current players on and, they all have respect for each others opinions. Des Cahill didn't need to keep anyone in line, but a show like TSG needs someone who can, when one ego thinks he is entitled to the pulpit more than anyone else.

    Lyster also was far too fond of starting out a broadcast by referencing what went on back in Pat Spillane's day and then throwing it over to Pat to let him rabbit on about Micko and Kerry for the next 10 minutes. Add in that it was often on a day when Kerry weren't even bloody playing and it was doubly was maddening !

    The hurling shows were much better, but that is because they have started to bring in younger pundits and phase out the dinosaurs, not something Lyster had any control over, I'd imagine.

    So will I miss him? I will in a way. But I think I'll enjoy the new presenter more, especially if she is willing to keep the egos in check and keep the discussions on track to the modern game and the team that is playing on the day.

    Most of us could learn a lot from Michael Lester.

    The Forum on Spirituality has been closed for years. Please bring it back, there are lots of Spiritual people in Ireland and elsewhere.

    I'd generally agree, but the' new 'pundits on the radio are as bad... Tommy Carr, Eamonn O' Hara, Bernie Flynn, and heaven help us Cora Staunton. If this is the caliber of analysts available, then just put on ads at halftime and I'll continue to make a cup of tea.

    A lot of the "staff" in Montrose aren't RTE employees as such. They are on contracts & they contract out their services to RTE, year by year, or tournament, or season. Lyster doesn't. He's a full time, staff member, so he had to retire at the mandatory retirement ages. Those on contracts can keep on working for as long as RTE choose to keep on renewing their contracts every year. Canning may be one of those.

    (That is not sexist remark by the way. Female presenters on TG4 for women's football and hurling are excellent. I was referring to her bizarre questioning of Gavin at the Sports Horse of the Year Awards last year!)

    Will be missed alright. It's going to be a tough gig to take on.

    Trouble will be mainly for the fussball. Games are so rubbish and the only thing pundits like O Rourke, Spillane and Brolly do is bicker between themselves, like even in the sendoff after final yesterday o Rourke and spilanne getting in digs about which one knew him for longer. Tis sad state of affairs and the constant Brolly needing to get the last word in. So off-putting. Please just get rid of him.

    He's more of a hurling man anyway, and truth be told hard to be otherwise with the calibre of entertainment between the 2 codes of late.

    For sure, rte losing one of their best.

    Its far from just Brolly who was an issue with gaelic pundits. The whole team of pundits for many games were just real poor. I would disagree that RTE should stop using the 3 main pundits maybe just not have all three together for games

    Good presenter and a likeable chap. Can’t say I’ll miss him because I don’t normally watch the games on RTE any more if sky are covering them. Their analysis is top notch, even my wife commented on it yesterday at half time and she’s have no more than a passing interest.

    If RTE have any sense they will use this chance to freshen up the whole thing. I cannot abide Spillane, Brolly and O’Rourke waffling on with their nonsense any more. Bring Whelan, Tomás O’Se and other young guys in for the big games and I will happily go back to Rte.

    Surely Brolly is there nowadays purely for the way he acts, He gets everyone shouting at the TV and creates a bit of havoc among the panel. I'm sure the host is told to let it run.

    He gets everyone avoiding the tv. I no longer watch anything that has Brolly involved, I'll stream it on Sky if possible or switch it off completely as soon as the whistle goes, all because of that cretin. I doubt i am the only one.

    Rte really needs to stop telling themselves that people still like this trolling bull**** from pundits like Brolly or Dunphy. Outside of a few morons that day is done, people want insightful commentary and they know what it looks like.

    As for lyster, good riddance, he has added nothing to that program for a long time now and is complicit in the farce it has become.

    A solid presenter. And a safe "pair of hands".

    In recent years he had become too safe. So probably time for him to move on.

    No problem with Joanne Cantwell taking over.
    She brings plenty of energy and she isn't afraid of egos.

    Worst thing RTE could have done is hand it to Maloney.

    He's in a two-way- tie with Tubridy for most boring presenter ever!

    Almost exactly the same for me now. Sky's coverage and analysis is way way ahead of RTE on a matchday.

    I never paid much attention to Off The Ball over the years but now that they have a youtube channel it's obvious that RTE is lagging behind alternative sources for Football.

    I you want insight into a match the last place to look is the trio on the Sunday Game.

    Brolly is absolutely painful as well, he is a parody of himself at this stage trying to spark controversy with every sentence out of his mouth to stay relevant. O’Rourke is the most bearable out of the three but his analysis is as weak as water. These lads are finished playing with decades it really is time to say thanks and move them on.

    I agree it’s incredible that Dolan is still employed to commentate on matches, there must be no screen test for these lads before they get the gig. I’m glad they are employing younger people like him but Whelan would be the only one out of the lot worth really listening to IMO.

    Not a fan of Cantwell TBH, but glad Des did not get the job. Lyster was a brilliant host but felt him and his panel got a bit stale and in the end I was tuning out to go to SKY. Maybe Cantwell with some different analysts might improve the situation, but RTE need to work on presentation format. I really like what SKY are bringing to the table but RTE do have a gra for the GAA but it does need updating.

    Dessie Dolan is brutal simply brutal.

    I am a Marty Morrissey fan so I am sure my opinions won't mean much to you all. A quote from Marty always sticks in my mind from the 2013 hurling final, something like "O'Neill to O'Donnell, two famous names in Irish history and culture", it just rolled off his tongue, completely unplanned.

    Yes Sunday’s from mid May onwards won’t be quite the same for a while. He became part of the Irish summer for so many years for those of us into the Gaa. Earliest memories of him were probably the ‘84 olympics where he did a morning show think it was called ‘day break LA’.....?
