Michael Lyster - will anyone miss him...?

Up until the Mid 2000s he was the best sports presenter RTE had. Excellent pro and completely unflappable. Enthusiasm and knowledge for the role was second to none.

Though he was still decent he tended to veer away from anything remotely controversial towards the end and the pundits shouted over him for a finish. Darragh Moloney as match presenter in soccer has been far more impressive.I would have him as host any time a Dublin game isn't on.

But imo he will be missed. Keeping Spillane and Brolly honest wouldn't be easy for many but he took no messing from either.

Top pro made it look easy

But there was never much time on the SG where he could start a debate on controversial matters like youd' see in the soccer

Wow that's a long innings, goes back before my time following GAA. Seems a bit strange now that they would make a guy their main GAA host at such a young age, but I guess there wouldn't have been a 'pool' of presenters to pick from back then, a rookie would have a better chance of being thrown in right at the top than now...

Will I miss him? Yes. I will. He was a huge part of the tradition that is the GAA. How could you not miss him - as in notice that he isn't there any more - when he is gone?

But like the GAA, RTE has a lot of traditions that are both good and bad. It doesn't always follow that they will all be missed to the same degree, when they go.

He seemed like a genuinley nice and decent person. You have to give him kudos for that, especially as we are in the era of click bait social media journalism, where it's all about incendiary articles, bull$hit claims and getting cheap digs in to get notoriety.

However, he he made absolutley no effort to check Brolly's out and out rudeness. That was a massive, massive failing that just can't be over looked imo. It spoilt too many shows. Last nights evening panel discussion was a very refreshing glimpse of how good the show can be, when they have recently retired or current players on and, they all have respect for each others opinions. Des Cahill didn't need to keep anyone in line, but a show like TSG needs someone who can, when one ego thinks he is entitled to the pulpit more than anyone else.

Lyster also was far too fond of starting out a broadcast by referencing what went on back in Pat Spillane's day and then throwing it over to Pat to let him rabbit on about Micko and Kerry for the next 10 minutes. Add in that it was often on a day when Kerry weren't even bloody playing and it was doubly was maddening !

The hurling shows were much better, but that is because they have started to bring in younger pundits and phase out the dinosaurs, not something Lyster had any control over, I'd imagine.

So will I miss him? I will in a way. But I think I'll enjoy the new presenter more, especially if she is willing to keep the egos in check and keep the discussions on track to the modern game and the team that is playing on the day.

I'd generally agree, but the' new 'pundits on the radio are as bad... Tommy Carr, Eamonn O' Hara, Bernie Flynn, and heaven help us Cora Staunton. If this is the caliber of analysts available, then just put on ads at halftime and I'll continue to make a cup of tea.

She isn't in his league at all. Painful at best.

How come Michael Lyster has to retire at 65 but Ger Canning is still commentating at 67?

(That is not sexist remark by the way. Female presenters on TG4 for women's football and hurling are excellent. I was referring to her bizarre questioning of Gavin at the Sports Horse of the Year Awards last year!)

Will be missed alright. It's going to be a tough gig to take on.

Trouble will be mainly for the fussball. Games are so rubbish and the only thing pundits like O Rourke, Spillane and Brolly do is bicker between themselves, like even in the sendoff after final yesterday o Rourke and spilanne getting in digs about which one knew him for longer. Tis sad state of affairs and the constant Brolly needing to get the last word in. So off-putting. Please just get rid of him.

He's more of a hurling man anyway, and truth be told hard to be otherwise with the calibre of entertainment between the 2 codes of late.

For sure, rte losing one of their best.
