Watched Secret City over the last week a decent Aussie series (6 episodes) that has been renewed for a second season starring Anna Torv.

Finally watched Unforgotten. Fantastic show! Brilliantly done and gripping stories!

We started it last night, only two episodes in yet but it does seem very good so far.

Harlan Coben has signed a 5 year exclusive deal with Netflix to have his books turned in to series and films.

Throwing out a hearty recommendation for A Chinese Odyssey parts one and two, starring Stephen Chow (of Kung Fu Hustle fame). Exquisitely bonkers, like an insane live action cartoon. The first part is a sugar rush, and while the second gets bogged down with its convoluted plot, it manages to pull off a hell of a finale that brings the two films together beautifully. Some endearingly mad and homemade practical special effects - sad that we rarely see anything of the sort these days.

A surprising amount of gems can pop up when a batch of Chinese movies get released on Netflix, and these two films are among them.

To play one high energy black stereotype must be tiring but to play six must be exhausting!!!

Christ on a bike...that sounds like that brutal Eddie Murphy film with him in all the fat suits...horrendous

I do like the chucky dolls behind though....and that robot that is in Kimmy Schmidt!

I sat down then last night to start watching River - with Nicola Walker. I should have waited a bit instead of straight after Unforgotten. It's good. But her character is different (obviously). Its good though!

I think that has already started (at least I saw ads for it on amazon fire)...I am guessing this means they will eventually have the marvel films etc as they own them as well, and pixar.

    I blame Eddie Murphy. :pac:

Caught The Lodgers there the other night.

It's... interesting, if very slow. Some great ideas just executed badly.

Odd to recall as nothing really stood out. The palette, the acting, the effects. Just all "okay".

    Thought the scene where
Sean was walking up the stairs on both legs was very well done.

Some details have emerged about Disney's proprosed streaming platform: looks like its (American) pricing will be lower than Netflix, but won't have as large a catalogue - banking on the appeal of the MCU, Star Wars & Disney stable to get users in the door. Couldn't spot any news about it launching outside the US, but the original Variety article is a bit of a monster.

    https://io9.gizmodo.com/new-details-emerge-about-disneys-streaming-service-whi-1828627324
... it won’t be pulling existing Disney and Fox-owned movies and shows from Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services to put onto their own platform. That means shows like The Gifted, Marvel’s Runaways, or ABC’s Once Upon a Time won’t be heading over to Disney Play, at least not for the time being.

Interestingly, not every investor is convinced it'll be a success:
One analyst said the service would need 40 million subscribers paying $6 per month just to break even.

Cheaper than Hulu & Amazon Prime, Starz, HBO & Showtime the same price as CBS All Access.

Watched this myself at the weekend. It was... alright. Can't hardly remember it two days later. Doesn't do anything particularly wrong but is pretty drab.

Right, but just mentioning 6 separate streaming services demonstrates how saturated the market is ATM, even with the heavy-hitters there's no no guarantee Disney will just waltz into the market a winner. And AFAIK the US cable / internet industry is already a bit of an anti-consumer mess, so it'll be interesting to see just how many punters will go with Disney.

    Anyway, probably heading off topic...

And streaming will get worse now with major telecommunications companies buying up Networks and studies like AT&T buying Time Warner.

They will then be able to throttle speeds for the competition now thanks to net neutrality being voted down by the US Congress.

For anyone who likes a good coming of age film, 20th Century Women on Netflix. Outstanding performances all round, and the best of this type of film i've seen in a while
