He has two or three more speeches to give - it makes more sense for him to do it in one of his public speeches than behind closed doors. M

Today was shown on RTE, national broadcaster. That's not behind closed doors. Why not address it now rather than wait, shows to me that it's not top of priority where as it is for many in this country.

What sort of person would allow their child too be taken away from them and put into a mother and child home or reformatory school for doing nothing wrong.

It was unbelievably inhuman thing to allow happen and yet people stood back and did nothing and let their own family members be taken away from them.

    'Power', allows it to happen.

I don't believe in all this god crap but if he does make a speech about sexual abuse he will do it in front of the masses in the park were all the sheep will applaud him for it

What about the sheep who has soon as Christianity was out of vogue, they were suddenly non-religious. Most Atheists or as they call themselves 'non-believers' are just as ignorant and sheep like. Selfish, self-indulgent, consumerist, intellectually lazy, go into any pub now and you'll see them with their sleeve tattoos and 'fades'. I actually applaud Atheists who engage with their thoughts and views on god but make no mistake there are thousands out there that haven't got a brain for themselves that would deride the pope and christianity.

If someone under 40 actively calls themselves religious in 2018, I would assume they do have a brain. It takes more intellectual curiosity and endeavour to reach that stage than it does to lazily label yourself a 'non-believer'

You make it sound like these families gave up their children without a second thought!

The priests/nuns coming to take these children did so under the threat of the family being shunned in their communities and shamed from the pulpit.

It was the church taking the children, abusing the children but you seem to focus solely on the families?!?

The people responsible for raping children are the rapists, nobody else.

Do you know how powerful fear can be? And how good the Church was at hiding it’s real motivations?

Stop looking for scapegoats- the Church are to blame here.

    No I don't.

Fact is to most people their children are the most precious thing in the world and yet in this country countess children were taken away for doing nothing, what sort of decent parents in any sort of society would allow that to happen unless it was a gun to your head.

Shaming someone at the pulpit is hardly a valid reason to allow a child to be taken what sort of parent would allow personal pride to come above their children's well being?

I don't need to criticise the church that is being done already but they weren't the only ones to blame for the influence they had on irish society they were allowed to have that influence by the people of this country.

I have engaged my thoughts and views with people who believe many times but it always ends the same way, All they have is faith no evidence, I snapped out of religion when I was 14, 2 years after I stopped believing in santa claus

That has nothing to do with what I said.

I know I've joined the lets have a dig at the church thread so obviously pointing out some hard truths that people want to ignore is not going to go down well but really people should realise the church only had the power because people let them.

When they were given that power they used it in the most evil way by raping and abusing the children of the very people they had effective control over.

I'm not having a go at you but you are either clueless or deliberately ignoring the power religion has over people. It was more powerful years ago particularly when people had nothing else but the hope of a comfortable afterlife. Life's troubles were peddled by all churches are payment for reward in the next life. The priest in Ireland since even before famine times was a position of authority. Being read form the alter would cause your neighbours to shun you. The last thing people needed when barely surviving was to be shunned by those whose help they may seek. If you think I'm talking nonsense I would suggest you read some of the social history of this country and the church's role for centuries in society.

I;m well aware of the role and influence church had in irish society, I;m well aware people were brainwashed to an extent but I still don't buy the idea that people who allowed their children to be taken away from them should somehow be given a pass.

It was unbelievably inhuman thing to allow to happen whether people want to accept it or not.

You failed to read the part where I said I am not criticizing the church because it has been done already b others and there is no point saying whatever else is saying for the sake of it.

This is a discussion forum it would get very boring of every single post just reiterated what someone else said for the sake of it.

Allowed? People didn't question the authority of the church or the state. Often a guard was I attendence. So please stop with this nonsense that people allowed anything. What ability had they to defy the authorities? 20 20 hindsight is great.

What the fcuk has any of this got to do with anyones belief in god or lack of? Its about child rape and the ongoing cover up and also the mother and baby homes.

I'm unhappy with rte,s coverage of the event today, paying for the bombardment of a religious event.

The Pope is officially a major international head of state, not just a religious figure. It would be similar enough to the Queen or a US President visiting Ireland.

And that is exactly the problem.

People stood by and let the church do what they wanted for decades.

They had no choice and the church behaved exactly as they wished. You really wish to ignore the hold the Catholic Church had on this state. Even a former Taoiseach stated he was a Catholic first and Taoiseach second. As I said to you already the church had a firm grip of society .
