Black people were literally mutilated, enslaved and bullied because of their race for generations and its still happening today to an extent. Stating theyre proud to be black is basically them saying their race as nothing to be ashamed of. This is especially relevant to someone like Aretha Franklin who grew up in America at a time when segregation was the norm, Black pride as a statement and identity is standing up to the persecution they faced for century's. As a white man you'll never comprehend what that feels like. Maybe instead of being proud to be white, be thankful instead, youve had it easy compared to most other ethnicitys.

I'd be as much anti immigrant, pro white culture as the next person, but I don't think the character of James Bond was ever immersed in the racial tensions of slavery era America... I haven't read much of Ian Flemings books, but I'd much rather a Timothy Daltan / Daniel Craig / Idris Elba version of Bond than an ageing Roger moore...

Black pride is more about not being ashamed to be black, rather than being actually proud of it.

I can't say I'm proud to be white, any more than I'm proud to have a nose. It's not something that I've worked for nor does it bestow me with magic powers. I'm not ashamed to be white.

You keep referring to a white race as if you're an American.
Just because you and I are white, doesn't mean we have any connection to the white people's achievements in the US, so I don't see why any random white person would have pride for achievements of another white person thousands of miles away.

If my mother (still alive) had been from the southern USA its quite likely that as a child she would have met an elderly black person who had been born as a slave. That's how recently slavery existed in that country. Blacks weren't even people - they were property. That's their starting point.

You can say you're proud to be European if you're European and white. If you're from another place then most of the white people there are descended from colonists. So best not to rub that in.

We have our own pride day like that on the 12th of July in the North. I don't view it as a positive thing.

It was all today during the coverage of the death aof Aretha Franklin. 3 to 4 times a week on RTE news usually at the end of the broadcast and it will all be about immigrants in Ireland and how they are proud of their race and culture and how that has continued since moving to Ireland, its subtle but the message comes across.

Based on some of the comments in this topic I'm starting to become distinctly not proud to be white. I know I should know better than to even read a topic which is a thinly veiled invitation to racists to spew forth, but I can't but feel despair at some of the attitudes in here.

White=European. We have pretty homogeneous cultures here so it's easy to say 'proud European' and not come across as some ignorant racist. For black people in the new world, Africa is too vague and ethnically and culturally diverse
and they also were sent to the new world in massive numbers long before Europeans arrived there in large numbers. Their link to their old home has been lost to time but their colour persists and is what defines them.

It be interesting to see how attitudes amongst black people differ amongst the Americas. In other parts, they seem to have a greater sense of place and belonging. But then I remember I've never really seen a black Brazilian outside of their football team.

It's true, we had no choice in being born white or Irish.

But being white means nothing to me. There is no distinguishing overarching white culture. Being Irish is part of a distict culture. So yes, I am proud to be Irish.

European culture, I know on our rock with our submissive relationship with Britain it blinkers our outlook a bit but to say there is no overarching white culture is nonsense. Europe has a thousand years of shared history.

In the case of the US though, black pride is important among black Americans due to the racism and oppression they suffered for years. However I would argue that black people being proud of being black is quite similar to Irish Americans people being proud of being Irish or Italian Americans being proud of being Italian.

Black people would love to show Nigerian American pride or whatever, but when their ancestors were shipped to the States as slaves, no-one bothered keeping records of where they'd been bought.
