I'd rather saw my hand off than sit through Angela's Ashes again.

    The Defiant Ones
Whilst undoubtedly entertaining and slickly-produced, I just felt a bit underwhelmed by what isn't too far removed form a 4hour+ puff piece on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine - maybe I just knew too much about both of them to get anything new from it? Worth a watch nonetheless if for no other reason than getting the views of some of the other artists on either or both of the main protagonists and for insights into them and their creative processes as much as Dre and Iovine. My biggest criticism of it would be that's it's too nice (again, puff piece) and would have been far better served showing the other side a little more (we get glimpses, but that's it). Still a 7/10.

That's why I thought Beats, Rhymes and Life, the A Tribe Called Quest documentary was so good. It could easily have been a puff piece and it starts out that way but Michael Rapaport lucked out in terms of capturing them during the fractious reunion tour of 2006 (I think). You get to see a warts and all look at the problems within the band at that point along with some startlingly honest interviews with Phife Dawg. Q-Tip is much more guarded and while it tries its best not to, the film can't help but paint him as the villain to Phife's underdog, while Ali Shahid Muhammad looks on from the back. Q-Tip's musical genius does shine through though and the interviews sprinkled throughout really illuminate how much of an impact they had on the scene at the time.

It is good to know that they did get their shít together and mended their friendships to release one last, beautiful album before the death of the five foot assassin. It would have been a shame to have finished with the Love Movement as their last album and nothing but animosity afterwards.

    And it's on Netflix...

(*It's actually the Rock the Bells tour from 2008 from reading back on it.)

Thanks for reminding me about that one Kunst, had meant to watch it ages ago and forgot it was on there.

I really enjoyed We Are Twisted ****ing Sister too.

Yeah, the Twisted Sister one was great fun but imagine being stuck with Dee Snider for more than an hour. The guy still seems to have a massive chip on his shoulder about not being appreciated enough back in the seventies even though they had so much success later on. And the guitarist, Jay Jay French looked like an accountant.

Check out Long Time Running about The Tragically Hip's last Canadian tour after the lead singer Gord Downie's diagnosis of cancer of the brain and surgery. I had always dismissed them as a Canadian knock-off of R.E.M. but it gave me a real appreciation of their music and it gives a good overview of their career and the special place they occupy in Canada. Also, the struggles of Downie after the surgery are poignantly captured throughout the documentary. Well worth a watch even if you don't know anything about the band.

Also on Netflix, I should add.

After re-watching Better Call Saul over the last few days, I think it's the best show Netflix have.

It's an excellent show, it's probably my favorite show ever at this stage, certainly top 5.

I've started on Dark Tourist. Enjoyed the first episode on South America, but didn't really think that it was dark. Then watched the Japan episode, seriously dark.

It's not a bad watch but I can't really take to the presenter. He's no Louis I tell ya!

I only watched S1 on the back of Breaking Bad; it was ok but really slow and I wasn't bothered watching S2 afterwards - should I pick it up again?

Definitely. I think it's better than BB.

It's still really slow in S2 & 3, don't expect that to change! It has picked up in S4.
But the slowness is part of the genius of it all.

I see that Great News is coming to netflix on 23rd of August.

It is really funny actually, if you like 30 rock or superstore (cant believe no one seems to have picked up on this show in ireland) id say you would like it. Andrea martin is hilarious in it, and so is surprisingly Nicole Richie!.

He's too like Louis. That's the problem. He's a good Louis, but not a great Louis.

It's gas when the Charles Manson lover brings it up, definitely not the first time he's heard it either. I'm sure he's used Louis as a template, and IMO does a great impression :pac:

Off topic, but +1 on Superstore: very funny, lightweight comedy and like you kinda surprised nobody in UK/IE have picked it up. 3 seasons and going (its in-show brand even cameo'ing recently in Netflix's Good Girls)

Watched Edge of Seventeen last night based on recommendations from others here and I enjoyed it. It probably ends a bit tritely but the lead is good as the slightly obnoxious teen whose world gets turned upside down when her only friend starts dating her brother. Woody Harrelson does a good turn as the teacher she spars with throughout the movie.

It's on ITV2 as far as I know.

Watched the first few episodes and while I liked it, it didn't particular have me LOL'ing enough to come back for more..

Its not on the same level as 30 rock, not half as clever, but still lots to enjoy and its a nice easy watch for me.

Superstore is fun, its a bit like that sky show trollied....only good.

I watched a few episodes of Superstore and thought it was mediocre at best.

Just finished the 3rd season of Last Chance U.
Big fan of the first two seasons, but I was a bit wary of the show going stale even with the change of scenery. Same idea, same sort of problems and people. But it still just draws you in straight away and I ended up watching all 8 episodes in two days.

I think I'm enjoying season 3 of Last Chance U more than the second one.
It definitely needed a change up as I was growing sick if that coach and the constant prayers. Coach JB this year isn't exactly the person you'd want to hang around with the most, hes a completely different personality to the original lad.

Check out QB1 next, I burned through that in a couple of days after S3 of Last Chance U
