Calves on their own poor enough trade at moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,570 ✭✭✭Mooooo

They would have to be less than 3 weeks old or else they'd have to be tb tested. But who knows, maybe they were.
I have seen hex make over €300 easily all spring and a good AA calf made as much.
The same thing happened last year too, hence the glut of Fr, Hex and AA cattle available now at not much along with a euro a kg

6 weeks is tb age. Also majority of AA this year were poor prices, last batch i sent fr bulls that went with them made 50 quid more.

No there was great prices paid for calves this spring. Any €50 fr were the absolute rubbish calves that would never amount to anything

That tells it's own story of where the Angus breed is now. Breeding small narrow hard fed cattle, nobody wants cattle like that.

Also in the finish of the spring calf the fr is scare and aa are plentiful so it's going to make me dear.

Tops of e2 per kg live for some nice animals all bought by specialist finishers, definitely don’t factory them yourself as they are ripping the pi”” with any lad I seen sending one or two

I does not help when dairy farmers are using easy calving AA bulls to mop up their JEx/Kiwi/FRx cows. These calves come black in colour with AAx on the card so when they arrive in the mart unsuspecting buyers bid on them.

I have posted in the past on F&F warning buyers to beware.

    7 Friesian 495kgs €750
    3 Limousin 353kgs €600
    2 Simmental 438kgs €720
    6 Friesian 490kgs €710

saw these 2 Ch bulls (11 and 10 months -belong to neighbour) sold in catleisland on monday:
really good muscle on these too.
    520kg - €1170
    470KG - €1150

I was out bid on the 470 KG lad, tempted to try him for breeding.

thought prices were back a bit, buyers not bidding on some nice looking animals. strange mart.

Yes and no bought Friesians over a week ago 400 ish kgs for 505 landed in the yard. It was a poorish price for the LM but they still have to be over wintered, the Friesians could be slaughtered off grass at 260 DW with abit of ration.Or at a bit with 300kgs DW before or after Christmas. The Lm have to go to next year. Simentals would next next years cattle as well.

If you had fodder and grass the Fr would be great cattle next June but my 400kg one will leave ,more of a margin in that system

Know nothing without seeing the cattle but around here while sellers are very disappointed with prices they still aren’t back enough to have me reinvest my stock money. Taking a bloody good 650 to 700kg friseian to clear 1200€ for example.

Observing, i'd hate to have been the lads selling them, the Lims were reasonable ones and didn't deserve that.

Your mention of humbling reminded me of a quote.

"He was a humble man and he had a lot to be humble about".

We all know about that this year.

That was ok money for your Friesians and in the yard as well.

What kind of grade animals are you expecting them to be. Not being nosey just trying to learn.

It is tough out there but lads buying are after taking serious hit on finished cattle between slaughter weights, grades, price and costs associated with finishing. When as a finisher you are taking a hit of 200/head you have to pass it back. finisher work on a margin if prices and costs are right they pass it back down the line in higher store prices but on a year like this they have to pass the hit back down the line.

The other issue is that costs over next winter are looking terrible, ration will be 60/ton over last years costs. There is no excess fodder around and straw used in the finishing system is doubled or trebled in price. Those LM are poor weight for age who ever buys them will have them until next August. They will be costing another 400-500/head to finish. At present prices they be making 1325-1380/head if they killed in the 340-355 range. In a way the buyer paid enough for them.

TBH it depends on the weight you get on them and where you kill them. If i can get them to 330/340kgs DW by the middle of next June there will be 7-8 O's in them and 2-3 P's. If you can slaughter them flat they will do well.

I always price cattle as they arrive in the yard they were bough in a mart so 10 for fees and 10 for haulage leaves them costing what they cost. Ideally them type of cattle should be sold out of the yard. There was 30-40 euro in fees and haulage handed away but most lads selling at the moment out of yards are not realistic, or else they are all tough sell in the mart.

There must be an awful skeet of cattle waiting in the wings, mart numbers have been way back for the last two months, in some places only at a 1/3 of cattle attending.

A lot of people are trying to cover the winter, nevermind build reserve fodder.

You'd have to think that prices will drop a bit in the Marts but lads will understandably be reluctant to take them.
