Eamon: "Scots they’re either nice or they’re horrid and these two are horrid."

Bill: "The Scots wont like that Eamon, that’s bordering on racism."

Eamon: "It’s not racism, it's ethnic criticism Bill."

Same as all the R.T.E. heads he didn't know when it was time to go. Not so long since he was FGs biggest supporter. Pity he cant take Spillane O Rourke etc with him

His "The Stand" podcast has recently being sponsored by Tesco, so I suspect he is leaving RTE for that reason. He no longer needs their money.

With his podcast, he has total journalistic freedom. No censorship, no restrictions, as he demonstrated with his decision to broadcast his volatile interview with John Waters, who walked out early swearing at Dunphy.

Dunphy has achieved all a genuine journalist could ever ask: being paid to report exactly what he wants.

Additionally, I see his podcast growing more attention now. His interviews with Niall Stanage from 'The Hill' on Trump's presidency are unmissable, though I do not agree with Dunphy's opinion of Trump as a freewheeling rebel. Dunphy responds personally to all genuine criticism on his social media pages, as he did to mine.

So I take it he'll have changed his opinion by the end of the year.

Sold loads of books and wrote for numerous newspapers.

He's actually quite successful in all the things you mention.

Other people earn that for doing real jobs successfully.

Just because RTE were stupid enough to pay anyone the best part of a six figure annual salary doesnt automatically make you a success.

Ray Darcy earns more money than him at RTE. He's not exactly ripping up trees as a broadcaster.

Like him or loathe him, Dunphy is a character who knows the importance of stirring the pot a little on the panel. He often threw a spanner in the works just to liven things up and get a good debate going.

He'll also be missed mainly because, as a "serious" journalist outside the world of football and someone who is comfortable speaking about a variety of topics, unlike your average ex professional pundit, Dunphy could see the bigger picture, and was always the one to the start the philosophical debates. How often, after some major power in world football got dumped out of a tournament, did he go off on his "the game is dieing there Bill!" rant. No other pundit would attempt making a pronouncement on the socio-economic stuff. Even if he was a mile wide of the mark and talking out of his hoop, it was something other than your bog standard match analysis.

We'll leave it there so, Eamon!

Personally I think it’s a sad day because Dunphy was always box office. Despite sometimes having outlandish opinions, he is an incredibly intelligent and articulate man.

My greatest memory of Dunphy was at an event for Waterford United (as it then was). He was headlining a fundraising event and MCing an auction of a signed Ronaldinho shirt. This was 2007 when the Brazilian was a superstar. The bids were only a few hundred euro. Dunphy, obviously pissed, said “Ah come on, this fella is a legend. We’re not leaving it go for a few hundred.” There was little progress on the bids.

Getting frustrated, Dunphy said “well if no one else will make a proper bid, I bid €10,000.” Needless to say, he won the auction.

However, we all wondered if he would wake the next morning, hungover, wondering what he had done and try to get out of it. Not long after a cheque arrived for €10k from Eamon Dunphy.

He’s bonkers, outlandish, intelligent and a class act. Will be missed.

Just get Gary Cooke to appear on the panel, nobody will be able to tell the difference.

He's failed at a lot of things, but achieved great success. You don't attain his level of success without failing along the way. Best of luck to Eamon wherever he goes. Top lad.

I'll miss him. With first Bill, then John and now Eamon, it really is the end of an era.

Who'll comprise the main trio for the big games, now? Liam, Richie and ???? Probably sub in Didi for the non-Ireland games.

Please not Damien Duff Please not Damien Duff Please not Damien Duff Please not Damien Duff Please not Damien Duff....

It's gonna be bloody Damien Duff isn't it, the miserable bollox. RTE seems to have been grooming him for the role these last couple of years.

I wish him well whatever he chooses to do. Have fond memories of him hosting The Last Word and Navanman. Many's a lively debate.

Tbf I remember for a few years I used to look forward to the analysis more than the matches. They were top notch for a few years but I think it got stale towards the end.

Now, I'm most definitely no fan of Dunphy the football pundit, but how on earth could you claim he's a failed journalist?

He's been well paid to express his opinion for decades now and still continues to do so. As much as I'm loathe to praise him, his podcast is great and he's really excellent on it.

You mightn't agree with him but there's no denying he's done rather well in the journalism game. If he's a failure then who exactly meets your criteria for success? It mustn't be a long list....

A Duff/Andrews/Sadlier triumvirate would be the punditry equivalent of the Roy Hodgson era at Liverpool.

Brady is already planning his exit you'd think.

If Dunphy was paid on football predictions there is no way he would get the house in France.

I think he is good on current affairs though less pantomime stuff.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Let's be honest, that's more or less Rte finished as far as analysis goes. It's the end of an era.

I know many people who would watch BBC or itv for their coverage but they always insisted on turning over to Rte for the half time and full time analysis as they spoke their mind. Be it Giles, Dunphy, Souness or whoever.

But now this signals the start of a changing of the guard, and no harm but I don't like the look of what's coming behind. Too safe IMHO, too boring.

    Duffer, Sadlier, Andrews.......think I'll pass.
