I know! I started tho so I had to finish. I was such a good reader before feckin George RR Martin got involved

ASOIAF is what killed reading for me, was an avid reader from about 5 until TY, so I was about 17? Read them and the Dirk Gently books last year and thats about it. I was a fan of them I just couldnt sit to read after that, the LC probably didn't help either, reading, rereading and studying absolute ****e is a great way to kill interest.

Ye've got me inspired to turn my old tablet into an eBook reader though, so maybe ill get back into it again

Have read 26 off that BBC list

Just back from first ever family cinema trip with the girls.

    Went to The Incredibles 2.

Girls were very well behaved and lasted longer than I had expected. Granted youngest fell asleep with 20 mins of the movie to go, but still....she is only 2.

    Very much enjoyed that!.

Saw this yesterday. Really enjoyed it.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Yeah I love GOT so I thought I would love it, I'm not gonna bother with the rest tho. I think part of the difficultly is that season one of the TV show is so loyal to the book I wasn't gaining anything by reading it.
I only brought one book away with me and I read it in 2 days, which is a shame as I had to take the slow boat from the Gili Islands yesterday and I'm heading to the airport in an hour so I would have gotten loads read between yesterday and today

Yeah, Season 1 is pretty religiously book aligned. Later seasons defer from the course but there are (imo) good reasons for that
Rob Stark's wife not being dead in the books for one. It's mentioned about twice then forgotten about

Yet I did enjoy the books. Granted I read them prior to the TV show so maybe that's why.

Dunno if I'd manage reading a book on my phone, I have a ton of podcasts downloaded to get me through travelling but I might find an English language bookshop in Singapore, there was one in Dubai airport but I'd no room in my bags, I've offloaded some stuff since then!

    My favourite older fantasy authors:

    H. P. Lovecraft
    Tolkien
Robert E. Howard (for those playing D&D "The Hour of the Dragon" and "The Scarlet Citadel" are the inspiration for dungeons)
    Jack Vance
Fritz Lieber (Diskworld's Ankh Morpork is essentially a piss take of his novels)
    Michael Moorcock
    Clark Ashton Smith
    Ursula Le Guin
    Pol Anderson
    Mervyn Peake

    Modern:

    NK Jemisin (anything by her)
    Naomi Novik (Uprooted)
Andrus Kivirähk (The man who spoke Snakish)
    Stephen King (The Dark Tower)

No Stephen King on that list...

Four we need to have a discussion :pac:

(Lovecraft is one of his major influencers)

Oh I love King, I just mentally put him under horror, but I forgot the Dark Tower, which isn't really, so I'll add him.

All The Dark Tower Books. Its such a rich weird, world in world.
    The Stand.
    11/22/63

I've read new stuff really, not had a chance to go back to Cujo. I will happily admit I enjoyed Mr. Mercedes

Does anyone here read David Mitchell? I think he might be my favorite author of all time.

Cloud Atlas is probably what most people would know, but I dont think he has a weak book in his catalog.

Agreed re: Mr. Mercedes - first book in particular.

Oh fcuk I forgot Salem's Lot as well.

    Meh I'm a King-a-holic. Name a book/adaptation of his I haven't consumed and I'll name another one most haven't read.

Also Cell. They fcuked up the movie.

And yeah, Molly mentioned it earlier. Under the Dome is class. Again, TV show bastardised it.

How did I not know this? Who do I write to?
Like just make a new slayer based off the ending of the last season, don't remake Buffy! Especially when og Buffy is streaming and has millions of fans who rewatch on the reg.
I'm on a rewatch now, just hit the season of Reily! ugh he.is.the.worst

That is an excellent list. I'm especially pleased to see Howard getting included. A few there I don't know though, so I see my to-read list growing shortly!

I've only read CA. I liked it, but didn't love it. What else would you particularly recommend?

For "classic" sci-fi/fantasy, I like Richard Matheson and John Wyndham. For more recent stuff, I like Robin Hobb, Philip Pullman, George RR Martin (never seen the TV series, and read books before it was made), Dean Koontz (a bit of a poor man's SK, but enjoyable).

I've a few chunky series yet to tackle - Wheel of Time, The Dark Tower and Malazan Book of the Fallen, but they're high on the list.

I tried to read the Dark Tower but just couldn't get into it. Actually that's another book I've never finished, think I got 3 chapters in and couldn't go on. Should I give it another go?

    Faves for me would be

    The Tailsman
    The Stand
    11/22/63
    The Green Mile
    Under the Dome

I also really liked The Girl who loved Tom Gordon and Geralds Game really gave me the heebie jeebies.

He has a ridiculous amount of books. I really should read some more.

Has anyone read any of Joe Hill's stuff? His Horns book was brilliant and I've NOS4A2 on my kindle waiting to be read.

Angel was great up until the whole Connor thing. Ugh. It lost it for me after that. But
I will NEVER get over Fred. I bawled for ages about it. Powerful stuff.

The way they ended Angel was terrible

Agreed. At least with Buffy they had a nice rounded off endpoint. Angel was just ridiculous. Kinda like they didn't know the end was coming and had more planned but it got cancelled between seasons. (like in Quantum Leap - the greatest TV show ever)

They rounded it off in the comic. Worth a read if you haven't already.
