I'm just back from spending 5 days in London and they are no where close to the obsession that Irish people have with their phones and having it stuck to their hands 24/7. Likewise on the continent.

I agree mobiles phones are a problem but its not just here. I was over in London about 3 months ago and it was the same there as it is here. People with their heads in their phones.

Imagine what it will be like when AR is widely available and used.

Taking over Public Transport bus/train or the Ryanair plane with the rest of the teenage / millenial gang in total feeling of self entitlement

    Junk food.

Drive through a small town or village and look at all the shuttered pubs beside thriving kippy takeaways selling kebabs, 3in1s and burgers at cheap cheap prices.
We've replaced one addiction with another and call it progress.

The World Health Organisation has recognised "gaming disorder" as a mental health condition in the draft 11th revision edition, of its International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).
The 'fortnite game' is the current epicentre of this.

When truly mobile, fast, cheap, portable, immersive, VR arrives (not AR) it will take it all to a whole new level.

Gambling and video game addiction were two that have been touched on but one that hasn't - Pornography addiction is going to be an epidemic in a few years.

Young people can view from such a young age now, the dopamine release from it is the same as with other typical addictive pursuits.

It's completely free and can be viewed virtually anywhere due to smartphones/tablets/laptops/and so on. It is very easily hidden, but can impact life in a big way.

Men in particular will train their mind to only get aroused by certain stimuli. I expect to see a lot more cases of erectile dysfunction in younger people. In addition it completely warps younger people's views of sex.

Porn addiction, online gambling, gaming, the effects of years of double digit hours of screen time and social media exposure... Scary for the next generation.

Fast food/ processed food. We all know people who are far too much into the instagram/kale/macros/nutrition stuff, but the general population resort more and more to quick fixes for meals as we move towards a more 24/7 live-to-work culture here.

    Overeating.

We're set to become the heavyweights of Europe in around 10 years.

And the gourmet burger joints, a €10 or €15 burger is still junk food.

Not necessarily. If it provides nutrition rather than empty calories it may not be junk food. A €10 or €15 burger is more likely to be made from good produce, though it would still be too much for most people to eat regularly and not gain weight. Who's getting "gourmet" burgers every day though? Cheap takeaways are much more likely to be depended on by people, whose health suffers as a result.

Addiction to TV chat shows on their national TV channels.
Addiction to fair city and east enders. And Red Rock to a lesser extent.

Phones. It's becoming a crisis when it comes to some of my family members. They can't engage in a meaningful discussion for more than 2 minutes without checking twatter or whatsapp

Like Brendan Courtney in the Indo recently, "I was called a f@gg0t when I was thirteen".

That was 30+ years ago Brendan, ffs! Move on would ye! There is now equal rights for gay people in Ireland and you can marry, why are you talking about that now?

Oh thats right, you have to keep your face in the media for your income, so you'll use your sexuality for profit.

(I don't apologise for writing the word f@gg0t btw, its only a word in the Oxford Dictionary, whereas the Indo felt they had to write it as f****t for fear of offending someone)

Edit: I had to spell f@gg0t that way cos Boards censored me.

Hardly any of the stuff mentioned in this thread is new at all and has been endemic within Irish society since long before any of us were even born.

Addiction doesn't exist. It's called human weakness.
Strange how it occurs in so many other species then.

Added to that, if you take someone with a severe heroin or alcohol addiction and try to put them 100% off of it cold turkey, they can suffer severe side effects on their health because biologically they literally are dependent on it. This also occurs in other species, and so it would actually be difficult to be less accurate than writing it off as nothing more than 'human weakness'.

A very healthy burger does exist, but the irony is that it is likely to be a bad burger - most places than are known for good ones insist on 20-25% fat content (or more?) which is what makes them good and juicy. A very lean burger without a lot put into the seasoning is going to taste like a slab of hot cardboard.

I've been saying it for a while about online gambling. I'm still astounded that it's not been heavily regulated - especially the marketing side of it.

Online bingo for the stay at home Mum's, heavily advertised during day time TV. Football betting ads during every game - relentlessly pushing it to the 15-35 demographic. Then you've got Paddy Power and their Banter leprechaun persona.

You wouldn't care if it wasn't so dangerous. You can gamble your life savings with a few clicks of a button. Hell, you could do it anywhere with smartphones. **** being a degenerate gambler in this day and age.

There's only one addiction needs sorting in this glorious country of ours - The scourge that is Fake Tan.

It's tearing communities apart....laughing at the bright orange / deep mahogany Jacintas and Shardins as they down their blue wkd's on the first Tuesday of every month.

    Such as... ?

You're coming over as looking for a reason to be offended, to be honest. I've only skimmed the thread but can't find who these people on it sayin we should all stop drinking entirely are.

Word of advice .... never create any online gaming account ever

Even for the lotto. It’s a slippery slope to bankrupcy

I have an online gaming account and I've gambled heavily. But I have willpower so I only gamble with money I can afford. I've not slipped to bankruptcy

These things can catch up on you.
