One of Smallings greatest strengths is taking the ball out from the back

    I don't buy that

    Hmmm

"As I said, from most games I have watched him where he gets a sustained run in the squad.
Good first touch and steps out into midfield and plays forward passes. Positive in possession.

So yes he is good on the ball."

I think he is saying smalling is good on the ball, he doesn't buy us not having a player that can do it.

    *******

I think the opposition allow smalling to bring the ball out, because they know he is no danger with it. That's why we see him bring the ball out.

Toby is too old and not good enough anyway I'd prefer maguire :)

Varane would be the CB I'd give anything to have. Absolute beast of a player.

I see no way Madrid will sell him, but he'd be my absolute number one dream at CB.

Yeah totally agree mate varane only solidified my feeling on him in this world cup and even if he did become available it would be double what pool paid for vvd.

£14m for a player who played 4 games last season. Thats good business.

Was reading Ajax fans on Reddit. Basically, they feel they need some older players, but because of where they are, they find it hard to get any decent players. So they NEED the likes of Blind, with his previous ties to the club. They don't have many alternatives anywhere near his level.

I feel I can't comment on Maguire at all. Literally know nothing about him, other than being relatively young and homegrown, and seeming to get some attention. Apparently he's good at set pieces too?

It doesn't matter how good he is at set pieces. We'd never get the ball to him.

Oh wow. I thought he'd finally come around after watching Smalling for another year.

Gareth Southgate didn't pick him for England because of his passing ability FFS.

Then hard stopping, turning around and passing backwards to the other cb or right back.

He is rubbish at bringing the ball out.

It sounds like you are confusing him with another player

Gareth Southgate didn't pick him for England because of his passing ability FFS.

Which was ultimately England’s downfall. Not one good defender amongst that back three for the sake of having “ball playing Centre backs”.

They are called defenders for a reason and I like my defenders to be able to defend first and foremost.

Maguire Stones and Walker don’t defend very well. The three are a disaster waiting to happen in posssesion constantly.

I honestly don’t see Maguire being on much of an upward curve in the next couple of seasons. He may make a move but I don’t see him featuring for a top team on a regular basis, unless Pep signs him as ydefending is the last thing Pep prioritizes when signing CBs.

No, it sounds like you've never actually watched man united play.

We don't play at the nou camp and smalling doesn't have 'pique' on the back of his Jersey.

Smalling doesn't pass incisevly or creatively. He doesn't create anything. We see him come out with the ball because the opposition allow him to, he is the least dangerous player on the ball coming forward. They want him to come out cause there is a better chance of exposing him.

I'm honestly shocked anyone could think smalling is competent at the elite level in this respect, never mind it being a strength of his game.

I’d argue that Smalling is just as capable as Maguire in bringing the ball out of defense when the space is there. He doesn’t having the passing game of Maguire that’s for sure but he’s a better defender than him. Better positionaly, quicker and just better overall at defending.

Ironically I think Maguire biggest strength(along with Stones) is his biggest weakness. They overplay the ball at the back when under pressure and are usually good for a complete fûck up a game 30-40 yards from goal.

I’m not saying I don’t want another CB brought in neccisarily but I certain,y don’t want Maguire. I also think there are really gaping holes in other parts of the pitch that need prioritizing over a CB.

I mean strengthen the weakest parts of your team first.

Ironically Blind is pretty good from playing the ball out from the back

Wish him the best and was hopeing he'd stay in the PL and played in his prefered midfield role as I enjoyed watching him play. Very tidy/intelligent player imo, just didnt suit the direction we are heading.

Jorginho is a great signing for Chelsea . I wish we signed him over Fred . Jorginho and Savic would have given us te best midfield in europe

Fred and Jorginho, to my knowledge, are utterly different types of players. Signing Jorginho would have been replacing Matic, who was one of our best players last season.

Savic, meanwhile, would be triple the cost of Fred, and I'd wonder if he would be three times the player Fred is.

I could count the amount of games in my head I've missed it's that little in the last 5+ seasons.

It's not something you should be getting yourself in a tif over and or being shocked. Smallings has always played out from the back and into midfield. Multiple examples of him over the years playing forward passes once he's stepped into midfield.

I'm surprised you can't see this.

Name a player in CB who creates clear cut chances on a regular occasion? You seem to be obsessing over this somewhat.

As for your strange Barca / Pique rant, well that's just funny :P

This is a more objective look on Smalling.
I'm not pushed either way as ultimately Maguire is not someone who excites me as a player all that much. Bit of sudden hype is coming from a couple of performances against some pretty mediocre opposition bar Columbia and Croatia.

Smalling's only real strength is heading and he achieved that doing something that is being eradicated from the game.

That said, I don't really rate Maguire as that much better than him and about the same as Jones. I believe Lindelof has a high ceiling and would like to see him blooded in a lot more this season.

If it was good, I'd have probably referred to a tier or something :P

But with the WC starting up, it's fun to be getting back to seven links a day.

The comment on whether you've watched united was tongue in cheek response to saying (not seriously) that I've mixed smalling up with someone else.
