The 'standard' M5 is about €167k, the competition model is €179k.

There's those technology and premium packages that you'd want for starters (really, they should both be standard in a car costing that much), Apple Car Play and a couple of other bits and bobs so you could easily spend another €10k on options, and that's before we get to the €13k for ceramic brakes.

@vintage - If they fold upon locking when you hold down the key then it's been coded to do that. It's a great feature, mine does the same.

Bit of an odd question to ask these days but any opinions on either the 2.2 or 3.0 Camrys, 90s and early 00s to be specific ? Both autos and manuals.

Ok cheers. Confirms what I thought, that it's been coded by previous owner as they close on a single press of the lock button. Just seemed odd that other stuff wasn't coded at the time like enhanced BT.

Can anyone confirm what automatic gearbox is fitted to a 2008 Golf? Some Golfs of similar vintage are advertised as DSG but others have no mention of this. Google search is shedding zero light other than what a DSG gearbox is all about.

Going looking at a car this evening.

Some had the older tiptronic but usually the 1.6 petrols had those.

Enhanced BT isn't something that can be coded with the same software that coded the mirrors. I coded my mirrors and quite a bit of other stuff using BimmerCode app on iOS.

I'd say the Bluetooth is a more advanced thing when it comes to coding.

Thanks, GustavoFring. What is the tiptronic like?

All very well put together, very comfortable and very reliable 5sfe 2.2 engine would be the most common. The 3.0 v6 (1mzfe) ones are rare here great cars with good power but the tax is the killer. They'll be a good shout for a future classic though as many were either exported or had their hearts harvested.

A cheap 2.2td one is a good option too, getting scarce now though due to the exporters paying around the €500 mark for them.

So I have a 182 Peugeot 5008 brand spanking new in the drive. We are a family of 5 and we occasionally need more space, so a 7 seater was needed. PCP deal suits us following an Xtrail trade in on PCP too. Before that had two bad experiences with out of warranty cars. We only need 1 car.

I should be excited with a new car but im wondering if other people are in the same boat. The car is grand and loads of gadgets, but God, years ago when I had no kids and was flush with cash despite earning far less, I had so many fun cars.

An FTO, an M3, an S2000, and a 350Z, and got to drive my brothers Lotus Elise and then Exige. Now it's SUVs and people carriers between us.

I don't need a 2nd car, but would definitely get something a bit older and fun if it wasn't for the insurance and tax in this Goddamn country. At best I'm looking at a pre-2008 GTI which is probably not enough fun to justify the outlay.

So many great big engined cars for sale, but I just can't tell the Wife we are paying another 2k tax when the current car costs 200 a year.

And yes, I know i could have spent far less on the one car and kept the rest for a fun number on the side, but PCP just suits and we need warranty cover having been badly burnt twice.

Any other dad's out there remembering the fun days as they drive their bus around!?

Does anyone know if folding mirrors when the car locks on a 3 series (2014) was ever standard from the factory. I don't believe it was, and my car does this every time I lock the car. Does this likely indicate that a bit of coding was done by a previous owner?

No, you usually have to fold them via the button on the inside of the door or hold the lock button on the key fob. You have to code them to fold automatically when you lock the car with the key fob. It can be done easily using a Bluetooth/Wifi ODBC adapter and the Bimmercode coding app.

The DSG ones normally have DSG written in chrome on the gear selector itself.

Cheers, I'm looking to buy something to get me around Australia and the place is flooded with them. Tax is also not a worry either. They seem a more sensible option over a Falcon (4.0) or Commodore (3.8) from what I can tell with little difference in performance.

A Vectra 3.2 or the older 2.6 is also on the cards but ill only settle on a manual. :D

I think you need to use something like esys to code EBT.

Any idea what EBT offers over the standard BT? Is it music streaming from apps like Spotify or music stored on your phone?

You can't stream from spotify etc with standard bluetooth?

Similar boat here. I think the most economical way of stepping into something fun now is looking at a classic.

I think it's both music streaming and phone stored music. I have it but to be honest I'm old and don't use spotify or store music on my phone. All my music is on the internal hard drive.

I'm young...couldn't afford a car specced with the internal hard drive :pac:

I am childless (currently) and went down the fun second car route for summer holidays. 6 cylinder BMW's can be picked up for cheap enough money, especially 325i which are a nice blend in tax and running costs.

Enhanced Bluetooth gives music streaming. So any audio from your phone via BT. Internal/streaming/YouTube. Also allows pairing of two phones at the same time which I find really useful. It blends the contacts into one list too, unlike vag style set up where you have to choose which of the two phones you want to use. The only difference from coding it in and not having it from the factory is from the factory you get a 2nd mic above the passenger.

I don't think thats too bad to be honest. The handsfree for my vehicles is for me, not my passengers :)

3.0 v6 all the way so since you're down under.

One of the options on my car is "BMW apps". This allows access to certain BMW approved apps that are on your phone via the iDrive. Main one of interest to me being Spotify. I have an Android phone and I have installed and uninstalled Spotify and the BMW connected drive app. I updated and rolled back the software versions of the iDrive too. Tried different leads and combinations of ways of getting the feckin thing to work and it never worked once. I tried three or four different Android devices on it and still no joy. Tonight I borrowed an old iPhone 5, plugged it in and straight away it worked perfectly....

    Ffs.

The iDrive interface seems pretty decent. I could scribble the letters of an artist or song on the touch pad and it finds it easily and plays it. I used to own an iPhone when they first came on the market and not sure I could go back now but this feature alone would tempt me.

Had the same problem in my father in laws 172 X6. Seemingly anything built prior to July 17 doesnt support android in the same way as an iPhone. Something to do with an NBT update.

Here is my thread at the time.

Good luck trying to find a manual in Oz, anything above Corolla size tends to be automatic over there and even in that category most of them buy automatics. As for a Camry, while they wouldn't be my cup of tea, it has to be the V6, sure petrol is less than half the price it is here and a six cylinder will be much nicer to drive.

Lads, I bought a car last week. Looked up motortax.ie for change of ownership status, it was transferred on the 5th and notified on the 6th but a new VLC hasn’t been issued yet. Any reason why this might be so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,574 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I'd say they are just busy, summer time so they might be down on staff due to holiday rota plus you have the July 182 new car reg surge.

There are a few, but not too many, clean manuals seem to have held their value. Yea like the states its mainly automatic here. Even the Hiace vans are mostly autos.

Think petrol works out €0.97 or there abouts. Diesel is slightly more expensive by a few cent. Tax over here is called "Rego" and varies between states/territories. Your road worthy cert (nct) and mandatory medical insurance (in the event of an accident) is included in your rego. In NSW I believe it's calculate by the weight of the car. Third party liability insurance is also not compulsory over here oddly enough but is much cheaper than at home.
