It's nice to see Manchester United players represent their countries in the late stages of a World Cup, but I do worry about the affect it will have on the team's pre-season and our start to the new season.

Some of our players will have been going all season in the PL then straight to a lengthy WC campaign. They will need a few weeks off and will be given those few weeks off I'd imagine. With a fair amount of them still involved with England, Belgium and France, I expect a scarce enough pre-season tour and a less than ideal preparation for the new season.

Pre-season games will be great for giving some young players a chance in the senior team, to get the non-WC players back into action, to help reintroduce Andreas Pereira to the team and the few new signings.

However, you'd have to imagine that no matter what progress these young players and new signings make during the pre-season games, they're probably not going to keep the likes of Pogba, Rashford, Lukaku, Fellaini, Lingard, Young, Smalling, Jones out of the team when those WC players return.

Some of those players, Jose will favour immediately when they become available, but they might not be back in training until the first week of August at the earliest.

And just to rub it in United are the first game of the season on the Friday in 32 days (will be 25 days after WC Final). . Effectively those players will be using the opening weeks of the league as their pre season. Its crazy when you think about it. At least Spanish clubs have until end of August .

Not just Utd affected by this. Spurs have 9 players in the semis and City have 7. And La Liga only kicks off a week later than the PL.

Back to Darmian and Blind. They are useful players who cover all across the back 4. Might not play much and with Dalot coming in and TFM back you'd think Darmian especially is expendable. The club has 4 injury prone centre backs and one injury prone LB though so I wouldn't be rushing Blind out the door. Still think he should have been the one to give Matic a break last season but I guess he had his own injury problems.

Would be a bit of a waste for him to go back to Ajax imo as he's a very tidy footballer and one of the best tacklers I've ever seen.

I think it’s ridiculous that the league starts back so close to end of WC when supposedly 43% of the players in the tournament are playing in the EPL! (Can’t remember where I heard the stat to be fair). It’s Also the year that the transfer window has also been narrowed.

Still wouldn’t mind the extra two days that city are getting, but thems the breaks I suppose.

Bind played, what, 4 minutes in the league last season? Mourinho isn't using him. He never brought him in, start or sub, for Matic - never played him DM at all as far as I can think. then with Dalot coming in, and TFM possibly coming in for this season... what is the point in keeping Blind in case we need him for a full match this season?

There really isn't a need to keep Blind - his usage in two seasons under Mourinho shows he couldn't be more surplus to requirements - regardless of how anyone here or elsewhere think he could prove himself usefull.

He was injured for a lot of the time last season as far as I remember. Obviously Jose prefers tall players but Blind isn't on a lot of money and seems a good lad around the dressing room too and a hard worker.

Herrera didn't really play from January until a few weeks before the end of the season too. Now with Pereira and Fred is he surplus to requirements? No as he will be useful. If you're not going to get the fee wanted for Blind no problem keeping him around for cover imo. He doesn't really seem to have problems with match sharpness when he comes in.

Blind would need Young, Shaw, Rojo, and Dalot to all be injured to get a game at LB....

Daft prices for players who aren't even rotation options for us.

Disagree, they are full internationals and this is an inflated market.

When it comes to the likes of Blind or Darmian I think people shouldn't dismiss the overall lack of quality defenders plying their trade these days.

As far as I am concerned the quality of defenders in general is at a very low ebb, and as such even average players hold a certain value and must be tempting to clubs in need.

Two full internationals with solid credentials, two players who are just not wanted as opposed to being players not fit for purpose, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the club got a nice wedge for each of them.

But also players United clearly don't want. So United has the choice of selling at a less than inflated price or keeping them in contract, costing further millions til they leave on a free.

Also, keeling them means we don't replace them, which means the squad is weakened moving into the future too.

United didnt want depay schneiderlain or di maria either and got great prices for all 3

I wonder do we have another option to extend Blinds contract again? Just to keep him until someone stumps up.

Made a 15 million loss, 25% on di Maria.

Made a potentially 9million loss, 30% or so on Depay.

20% loss, to maybe even, on Schneiderlin.

So mostly losses on the three players you have listed.

Cool, we sell blind and Darmian for losses too and it will be easier to sell them, as I've implied.

Mentions of Schneiderlin, Di Maria, Blind and Depay give me PTSD.

Blind is technically an excellent footballer. Just not jose's type of player

Yeah, I think we've bitten off more than we can chew with this one.

Meh, there's already been the 'Who said he was fat parade?' when that training pic was posted a few days ago.

I and a few others were saying at the time of the beefy holiday pics though that it isn't the point whether Shaw can get back in shape or not. The fact that he is in and out of shape so often might be part of the reason he has yet to nail down a place in the team. Where the rest of the squad have no problem staying in decent shape and treat it as a way of life for the pro-footballers they are, Shaw seems to find it a bit harder.

I hope he can crack on this season and make his mark on the team, but I'm starting to get an unsettling feeling of deja vu with him at the start of each season.

I just don't get how people can see those photos and question Shaw's appetite....

    ...for success.
