We wanted to try out the loading point that the hire companies use and it worked out well so now we will push Waterways Ireland to also make these points wheelchair and limited mobility mooring spaces. Thanks to the Boards members for helping us out :)

A fine selection of boats there, no big dint in their numbers from the recession.

After deciding not to risk the Mizzen in the dark and heavy rain/mist, I wound up doing the trip anyway in poor viz and rain the next day. After not a lot of fun threading my way out of Baltimore through the islands in white muck. I decided to try South through Gascanane Sound to open sea hoping an offshore route might leave the rain or at least the heavy mist behind on land and give me a chance to see some whales or dolphins and safer passage.

No such luck, had to really concentrate on the GPS all the way and it's amazing how difficult it is to steer a straight course on GPS only with zero visual reference.

See how much of Mizzen I could see from about 100m off when I carefully nosed in out of the mist just for a break from the monotonous white mist whihc had eased just a little as I approached.

The real cautionary reminder- it's not the first time I've travelled in viz like this- is how your brain says," you've seen nothing you can look at the plotter for a while, without factoring in you can see only a few seconds ahead instead of a few miles.
It's hard but you have to keep reminding yourself someone could be coming the other way so collision avoidance opportunities are tiny even when you're concentrating.
It's safer to stop to reset waypoints or do anything that takes your eyes off the water and to not spend too much time concentrating on the GPS course indicator or compass heading at the expense of time searching ahead!

I use to record alot of sailing when i was younger in the mid 90s and recorded Nationwide on rte in 1996 which was on cork week. Only found the video recently, short clip here, quality isnt great as its a video of a video from a vcr which hasnt been used in donkeys years. there is sound but its a bit low

Cracklin’ Rosie looking mighty fine there.

I remember when her & Mustang Sally hit the scene, they looked the absolute shizzle, especially with the Corby distinctive transom and their masthead rigs (which was so against the grain as everything fast back then had fractional rigs).

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,036 ✭✭✭✭neris

That rig on Rosie was a fractional 12 months earlier. I got a look around mustang on the marina when she came to howth 1st in 95 and as 14yo she was unreal and like something from the future compared to the other boats that were racing in her class that weekend.

Another, innovision 3 (imx38). When a bloke with money gives a load of young lads a boat and enjoys writing cheques

I did my 1 and only Cork week in 98 on the quarter tonner and we had great craic, it was quite windy all week.

Makes me feel old! We did the first one, 1978, sponsored by Beamish & Crawford, so the event is 40 years old this year!

We had great racing - I still recall a tack on tack duel with our main competitor, Yellow Devil owned I think by a local sailor called Donegan. He beat us in the placings, helped by local knowledge and the fact that we blew first place on the feeder race (Plymouth?) due to a moving oil-rig! I think there was no feeder race from DL.

Tape Drive sails looked amazing when they first started showing up!!

I knew a guy that crewed/looked after Sally (I worked with him in the INSS in Dun Laoghaire), and got to go for a spin in her 1 day (sadly though it was just motoring around the marina in Howth).

There used to be a lad on Dun Laoghaire pier that would play the bagpipes, a surreal experience on a calm summer evening.

Nothing too exotic, but almost Mediterranean with this great weather. A view down Kenmare bay looking towards the Atlantic.

I just became a co-owner of EVO 43. So now I am a part of Point Piper Syndicate, if you don't know what is it then read here. The yacht is wonderful. The form and function blend exactly as they should. It meets all my needs. So I know how I will spend this weekend.
