I think F1 have been lucky with Rookies the last 2 years , Ocon was great last year and Pushed Perez the whole way . Lerclerc this year , and Gasly is in that group as well Making less than competitive cars look competitive is a real sign of talent .

The French Rookie Renaissance ft a Monegasque.

I am sure it will be the British are coming when Russell and Norris are promoted ...Mclaren could do that ..dump Alonso Promote Russell . spend the 40,000,000.00 on fixing the car problems . Pretty sure Vandoorne is alot better than we have seen.

He's French except for tax purposes. ;)

I think the influx of french drivers made French gp suddenly a lot more popular. I wonder what will happen with British audience if Hamilton decides to leave in the next few years. Is there anyone else but Norris on the horizon for Brits?

I actually thought it was mad when I found out he was actually born in Monaco. Only around 150-300 births there a year. I think he spent a lot of time around the Monaco area growing up, I know Bianchi who was from Nice was good friends of his, only recently found out he was actually Leclerc's godfather too.

He's doing a really solid job at Renault. Ok, so they can't ballast the car as well as with the little guys, but I'm beginning to see things are shaping up. Any slight improvement in that PU and they'll be in the mix with the others.

RB not opting to take the new MGU-K in Austria, so let's see what the Renault has to offer...

This is why I think Renault could be a big enough player in the driver market. Their car is really improving, and while not a top 3 team (yet), they are a works team and are playing catch up at a reasonable rate to the top teams.

IF...IF Ricciardo leaves RB, then he could easily a seat there, and RB can then pull Sainz back to fill in. OR, if Alonso wants out of McLaren, he would always go back there (this one is the joker in the pack though).

    Silly season could get silly.

C4 reported that McLaren had offered Dan Ric 20 million (a year presumably) to race for them. Until he signed his current contract he was racing for red bull on $60,000 a year. Such is the competition to get a place in the red bull driver program, they're willing to do it almost for free (relative to established drivers)

So who knows what he'll do. He might think to himself that $60million over 3 years would set him up for life. Championships be damned. Who knows.

But fwiw I think signing for McLaren is kinda an admission of surrendering his championship ambition.

He mentions Jules before this but around 3:10 in is when he discusses they're relationship.

His father was best-friends with Jule's father, his older brother was best-friends with Jules and he stated he's best friend with Jules younger brother. So I can understand the decision to choose Jules as his godfather.

Jules and him were close and he's said before about how he was like his mentor. In the above interview also mentions how when he struggled for money in 2010 for karting Jules helped him out.

They have to know what the car problems are first before you can fix them. Mclaren are clueless at the moment. They blamed Honda the last three years but now that they no longer are powered by Honda they can not do that anymore and we now see that there problems are much bigger than anyone ever thought.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I don't recall anybody suggesting he was at the level of Hamilton or Alonso but to dismiss his results entirely suggests you haven't actually looked that closely them. Find someone you consider to be a solid driver and compare them.

There’s a few young brits hanging around with potential, Norris and Russell the standouts. Aside from those in F3 there's Dan Ticktum Red Bull junior won Macau GP last year, Enaam Ahmed British F3 champion, both have won a couple of races already this season. Maybe Calum Ilot as well, he's in GP3 this year part of Ferrari Young driver academy

Perez is not a bad driver but every so often it's hinted he has a bit of attitude or at least that the year in McLaren scared some other teams away. He is talented enough to be a second driver in Ferrari but I doubt he'll ever get a another chance in a top team.

He definitely has talent, and speed. I don't think he's top tier, but as above, solid 2nd driver material. My gripe with him is his attitude, there was a race last year where a team order was issued and he just couldn't accept it to let Ocon past. His coming together with Ocon a few times too was from a similar vein.

Exactly, the team needed to manage the situation better but both drivers played their part in the mess.

Sure there always is. It's a question of who has the maturity and the concept of 'the bigger picture', which matters most.

You have no idea of the background. Who knows why it got so testy. I honestly think he gets blamed for everything he is involved in. Even the race stewards seem to give him a raw deal a lot of the time where if Hamilton or Vettel done the exact same thing it’d be called a racing incident.

I'd rather see mclaren with an experienced driver like Kimi than go the direction Williams have with their 2 young drivers

If Kimi goes back they should bring back Ron too :D

It could be worse. He could be driving for McLaren and inform everyone over the radio after almost every race how it was his best race ever. :D

Mclaren at the moment is a graveyard under construction, wouldn't wish that move on anyone. Kimi should just Retire or go to Formula E . Why would he take Alonso seat and spend the time wondering where all the podium finishes went .
. Ricciardo couldnt even consider it if it was an offer on the table . There are more unknowns with Mclaren than there are with going with a Honda engine . If Mclaren were to recover the number 1 driver should be Vandoorne . He is still young enough to benifit from a recovery in a year or 2 .

I doubt he will be on a much lower salary then Max with his new contract, for the team to function properly you need both drivers to be happy.

Yeah that was always the most likely scenario. As mentioned as n the article, he’s not in a great position to demand anything given the only options he has are to accept whatever red bull offer him or move back down the grid.

It’s likely to be a case of him signing for significantly less than Verstappen. Cruel given how decent he has been this season vs how erratic Verstappen has been. But Verstappen is the one with the contract and Dan Ric is in a weak bargaining position.

I hope he gets what he deserves which is at least equal pay and conditions with Verstappen. But I suspect this will be more about supply and demand than what he deserves.

He's been with Red Bull for a long period now so a switch to McLaren (if Alonso leaves) would at least give him number one driver status as well as a hefty pay increase.
