Sexton goes mad at Earls at the 13 minute mark. Anyone know why?

My interpretation was Sexton ran ahead of the ball on a pretty decent support line.

He is pointing at Earls into space ahead of him.

Earls just about had the outside. A carry through the tackle and offload to Johnny was on

Took this from a Kinsella article on the 42. What a great lineout.

It was very slick and that throw was absolutely bang on.

We did have our issues with the line out though at times. After POM's second penalty win, we kicked down to their 22 late in the opening half and lost it. Then we lost another near their line in the second half when Herring came on.

I've seen a lot of praise for our set piece at the weekend but, to be honest, I thought it was acceptable and nothing more.

I think our mail, both offensively and defensively has been far below our usual standard too

    Agreed.

Although I recall one incident where we had a really good setup and one of Oz players came round and tackled the man in possession illegally. Ref seemed to see it and thought it was fine. Does anyone else remember this and why it was legal? I think Australia had engage so a maul had been formed.

Possibly but I'll add two points on that:
    • The Aussie pack is pretty massive. They're filled with big units and have a significant size/weight advantage over our pack.
    • I thought we actually defended their mauls relatively well. Their try came from a line out around 7m from our line. It took a full 30 seconds for them to score from the ball being received. I felt that was pretty stingy from the referee to not at least give a warning especially as it was stopped on our 5m line for a solid spell. There was one in the second half which was even slower and allowed to stay with the pack without a word.

I think this is correct. There was a ton of space beyond the aussie line.

The ref's interpretation gave the team in possession huge scope to hold onto the ball, we really should have adapted better and used our maul not just as an attacking platform but as a means to build territory advantage.

Not calling maul when we held up tacklers and not calling use it when Australia were mauling seemed to surprise us a good bit.

Not hugely surprised by the result, I expected a reversal from the 1st test. Now makes for a very interesting 3rd test.

The only thing is, I really feel like Australia will find it very hard to compete against Ireland in that form. We were dominant at the weekend, and the only real let down was how unclinical we were with all that ball and territory. We really should not have been put in a position of them making a comeback near the end. Something I think the coaching team will focus on.
After the 1st test the focus would have been on the breakdown and improving our defence from 12 out. Both achieved through both personnel changes and improving execution. I feel the focus this week will be on maintaining the above, while improving our own execution when we are in their red zone. We did tick up the scoreboard at the weekend, but we really should have won by more in the end.

Can see Cronin, Aki (at 12) and Stockdale all coming back in to start.

Will still be tough, and the team will need to remain really switched on, but if they are I can see Ireland winning the series with a 10 to 15 point victory this weekend.

    Should be another brilliant test.

Have had more than one person suggest that we might see rotation at 15 this coming weekend.

Hard to know and I think if we've key injuries from last weekend it will limit our scope to rotate.

Options for 15 are Conway, Larmour, Carbery, Henshaw and Stockdale. All have played there before but not obviously all for Ireland.

I think Henshaw is the least likely of that bunch followed by Stockdale.

If we rotate at 9 then we won't see any change at 15.

The issue with 15 as was pointed out before is that we don't have anyone who's regularly playing 15 at provincial level in the squad, and Folau isn't exactly the best opponent to just throw someone in against and see how they go.

I'd be surprised to see Kearney rotated out, especially if we make any other rotations in the backline.

Cooney Sexton Stockdale Henshaw Ringrose Earls Kearney

Ross Byrne either starts or isn't involved IMO. If he does start then Murray starts

Wouldn't be surprised to see Jack McGrath start.
Would like to see a Stander Leavy/Jordi Conan backrow too

I don't think Ross Byrne will be involved. It's his first time in the camp and it's a key position. He might get a bench appearance in November.

Aki might come in for Henshaw, Stockdale might come back and the hooker might change again. Other than that, I don't foresee any changes.

Edit: Conan for Stander is also a possibility. I wouldn't bet on it though.

I'd love to see Herring or Scannell get a start again.

We all kind of know what Cronin can do at this stage.

I'd like to see Cronin get a start because he deserves it. 62 caps, of which 53 are from the bench. He doesn't deserve the current undercurrent of chatter about him. On reddit I've seen.

"He's got a bad relationship with Joe"
"He's the problem in the scrum"
    "Can't trust his darts"

If he started and Scannell benched, I think it'd explain it quite nicely. 3 hookers, 1 start and 1 bench each.

I don’t think it’s poor execution in the red zone. We weren’t really playing poor passes, knocking on or giving away cheap penalties.

It was more about lack of invention. Bish bosh in pods of 2 and 3. Sheer force of will. Eventually we got there through Furlong but we left a lot of opportunities on the pitch.
Joe is such a brilliant coach and he has the team zinging. But we still look one dimensional in attack.

On the same note, would be a similar type rotation if we started Porter and had Ryan on the bench and gave Furling a rest.
However the fact Furlong is such a good player it may be hard to justify that rotation.
But I would really take it as a signal of belief in the squad depth if they do rotate the props.
Also, a starting front row of McGrath, Cronin and Porter will be a good unit as they are well used to coming in together for Leinster.

Edit - not sure where that leaves us if Healy can’t play, perhaps Ryan to bench for loose head and Furlong to sub for tight head in that case.

Oz are no mugs. Strongest team for this final game, in my view. Hendo back in, Stockdale. A case could be made for going Aki - Ringrose in the centres. I'm not sure if Cronin is the best hooker, in Joe's view.

I think it's because Earls didn't kick it long enough. There was no room for Earls to keep running
    I thought it was because

    1)he kicked too far

2)too late meaning he got tackled into touch

Sexton had continued his run and wanted Earls to play him back onside.

I feel really weird being complacent like this but ... am I the only one who thinks that, notwithstanding the superb performance from Pocock and the Aussie scrum at times, as well as their very efficient backline, Ireland were the better team in the first test? In the second test, we should have been out of sight due to our dominance. Australia were again very efficient. Possession and territory, all ours. Our forwards were kicking theirs around the place, we're far more organised, Australia got their scores off iffy possession, we didn't. Of course that's on us, but if we deliver on the odds in the same way as the Aussies do, we should clean up.

I have the feeling that this Irish team, at full strength, which is what I want to see in the third test, is far better that this Australia team. And it hope/think it'll be like the third test for the Lions.

A draw courtesy of a dodgy refereeing decision?? Thats a weird outcome to hope for

Do you kiwis ever think about anything other than refereeing decisions?!

I hope one day you become more like us, the great Irish people, and consider all 80 minutes of rugby. Rugbaí Iomlán, if you will.
