Very much each to their own - it's a sports podcast!!

I don't think they should ignore the giant corrupt white elephant in the room

Same. I like SC exactly because it doesn't just discuss sport in isolation.. they recognise the geopolitical importance of international sport and blend it with an analysis of the sports themselves.

I might have cared for a discussion about the groups and how they qualified when I was a kid with wall charts. That wouldn't be enough to keep me interested now.

I like both aspects but SCs have really been lacking in the football preview part of it. No one is saying you have to dedicate a whole episode on panama but you could certainly mention them. There are lots of interesting stories about these teams and nations.

Ok fair enough regarding the Putin stuff and to be honest I find it interesting myself, but to spend atleast 30 mins (and probably more - I had to turn it off I was so bored) talking about quotes from recent player interviews instead of discussing the actual football at the world cup is fairly bad in my opinion.

There's only about 8 of the 32 teams that anyone will give a crap about hearing about.

Dude, that's completely the wrong way to look at the world cup.

The most interesting thing is who'll be this year's Bulgaria/Sweden 94, Croatia 98, South Korea (!) 02 etc

Who'll be this tournament's James Rodruiguez?

I don't care if Spain or Germany have good squads. I know that already.

I just hope Ken doesn't spend the World Cup sneering at how bad anyone who loses is.

If he interviews Dion Fanning or Jonathan Wilson, I'll be skipping it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,436 ✭✭✭Beersmith

The Peruvian player who had been suspended because of the cocaine positive test was very interesting. More tim vickory and jon wilson needed.

The problem probably is the lads don't know much outside the premier league.

No one predicted those teams to so that well before it started except maybe Croatia. So they are hardly going to be included in any potential semi finalists predictions.

That is exactly why it's interesting to know who the potential candidates are.

Then there's the discussions about the group(s) of death. I can't wait for the Arg/Cro/Nig/Ice group.

Who'll be this year's Iceland?? (I know it was the Euros, but you get the point.)

My point was you can't really predoct who it will be , Wales got the last 4 in the euros, no one could have predicted that.

Can't say I've ever had a problem with Jonathan Wilson - he's still one of their best and most knowledgable guests, in my opinion. But to each their own.

Dion Fanning on the other hand is fairly awful. He's just a poor man's Ken: with all of the smug condescending cynicism, but without any of the wit or imagination. He tends to bring the worst out of Ken too.

Nah. I'd prefer to hear Ken spinning a mundane Paul Pogba quote to suit his anti Mourinho movement. This is what the world cup is all about after all

Fanning also works for Joe.ie so loses any credibility whatsoever because of that. His da was editor of the sindo for years too, so imagine he had a handy enough route into the closed shop that is Irish journalism. Him and Miguel Delaney are instant skips for me.

Suppose they'll have US Murph prattling on about his beloved bleedin' Warriors this week.

Wilson is extremely knowledgable, no question about it. I just find that he likes to point out what's bad more than what's good, which can get a bit grating.

Football Weekly, Totally Football Show and The Game all had pretty extensive previews of each group if anyone is looking for one.

First 15/20 minutes of the big 'World Cup preview' was more bloody politics, linked to Ken's boring IT article. Ken has been insufferable lately, never thought I'd say that but it's true. Hopefully the World Cup rejuvenates him a bit.

Yep, I'm tired of Ken's leftist witterings. I unsubscribed this month as for some reason, for the first time in my life, I've no real interest in this World Cup.
I just cannot summon up any enthusiasm for it. Maybe I will when it starts.
Ken can be amusing when recounting journeys etc. but I find his political and social commentary, extremely hard to take.

My complaint has nothing to do with Ken's political leaning, so don't lump me in with your right-wing misgivings. I just wanted to hear about the world cup, mainly because the podcast was billed as a world cup preview. I didn't want to hear more about Putin, Crimea, Sochi Olympics, corruption and assassinations for one episode. Can't escape that stuff in the news, so would be nice if Ken could have reigned it in for one episode.

I don't think its right that all of that gets ignored just because its a World Cup.

Russia being awarded this tournament stinks to high heavens. I can't even get a little bit excited about it, and the next one is just as bad in Qatar.

The next one is way worse.

At least Russia has a sort of decent history in the World Cup.

Calm down there. I'm not lumping you in with anything. My misgivings are just that. I'm not sure where you're going with the 'right wing' thing. I mentioned Ken's left wing witterings because that is demonstrably the case with Ken. Questioning that, does not make one 'right wing'.

There might be something to be said, though, for stand-alone pieces on the political context vs. the purely football coverage. Personally, I have no issue with having the two strands intertwined.

As for the continuing complaints, over and over again, about the lads' political leanings and outlook on social issues, I really don't understand what's expected here. That the lads will just suddenly take the red pill? I just don't think yosser and others are ever going to find what they're looking for from the pod. Beyond a certain point, I'm not sure why one would keep inflicting that sort of frustration on oneself.

    much much worse

at least Russia is a footballing country with a reasonable climate. Qatar is a city in the desert, with no history of football whatsoever, no footballing infrastructure that is playing super quick catch up by utilizing what is a modern day slave trade.

Well AS I said, I habe cancelled my subscription. I haven't complained that much before actually.
Are people not allowed to critique?

ah now but you are though... and that's fine.

This thread is littered with your complaints about Ken and the left wing leanings of the lads in general..

I mean - seriously - surely you're not going to say that you're not!?

Why do you keep upsetting yourself with content that you don't like nor want to listen to?
