I think all this thread has really proved is that worryingly large numbers of people don't understand statistics.

Technically speaking these are parameters rather than statistics.

Parameters are the figures for an entire population whereas statistics are based on taking a sample of said population.

P.S. I'm not this anal in real life - I promise!!!

A good rule in life is to shag the nurses but marry the teachers :-0

Not really, takes a special type of person to be a guard, or clamper, or door to door salesman, or canvasser.
All in the one group to me.

Birds of a feather fu'ck together.

I expect people in large companies offices also pair off to a high %.

I know where I work there is a large amount of couples, people dating and married couples.

And makes sense. You spend a significant portion of your day and week in the company of others in the workplace, so its pretty obvious stuff.

is it that 49% of female gardai married a guard

    or

is it 49% of married female gardai married a guard

makes a big difference to figures

I'm guessing that it is 49% of the total female Gardai.

100% of all feminists don't marry straight white males!

We should be set for a big generation of Super Gardai now so. When two Gardai become one, a Super Garda is created and not all the breakfast rolls in Ballinahinch can stop them.

    For sh!ts and giggles:

Lets assume Garda numbers are 20000. And that 12000 of these are married.

    We know the split male/female is approx 75/25 so this gives 3000 married female Gardaí. (i.e. 12000 / 4 = 3000)

49% of these female Gardaí are married to other Gardaí which is 1470. (3000 x 49 / 100)

I'm going to discount same-sex unions because the percentage is very small so this means that each of those 1470 female gardaí is married to a male garda giving a total "married within the force figure" of 1470 + 1470 = 2940.

As a percentage of the overall force this is 2940 / 20000 x 100 = 14.7% of overall members married within the force.
As a percentage of married members this is 2940 / 12000 x 100 = 24.5% of overall married members married within the force.

*** All my figures are made up - this is just to show how the percentages work.

No it doesn't. If there is 20000 Gardaí in total and the ratio of male to female is 3/1, then there are estimated 5000 female Gardai. If 49% of those married a male Gardaí. That be slightly less than 2500.

as above it is not cleasr if it is 49% of female guards or 49% of married female guards

I'm fairly sure it's 49% of married female gardai. Not 49% of total female gardai. But it is a little unclear in the link.

It could be boiled down to, people with a job that involves shift work tend to marry other people involved in shift work.

Certain occupations tend to socialise with those of the same circles so its no surprise i presume the same for lawyers, judges, barristers etc.

15% of male gardaí marry nurses

Did you hear the one about the cop who picked up a girl in 'Coppers?, They made love all night, the cop was kind enough to drop her home next morning....

Passing a halting site in Finglas the nurse girl said "You can just drop me here" .. "Yea lying little bitch" said the Guard "You told me you were a nurse"...

"No" say's Rosie "I told you I was one of the Ward sisters".....

The fact Garda have to be careful where they socialize means they are far more likely to socialize with other Garda

Would have a big influence on these numbers , it also leads to even more group think from the organization , a problem it is very clear to see in the latest scandals and problems .

I see doctors have more sense. Know the crap hours and horrorstory stresses - marry away from it.

Makes sense, shared interests and working together can often blossom into a relationship.

Add to that in the case of Guards/ Doctors/ Midwives/ Taxi drivers/ Publicians, they don't work regular 9-5 hours, so if they were married to someone who worked 9 -5, it may not work as well. We partner up for companionship, if that isn't there, relationship's fade in the long term.

I think it makes more sense for a Guard to marry a teacher or a woman with a regular 9-5 job, especially if they want to have kids like most couples do. If both have irregular hours the balance of the relationship might be very dysfunctional and there is always uncertainty and a constant battle about finding time to spend together. It must be very stressful. A family works better with the stability of knowing at least one parent will be at home at certain times and can plan accordingly imo.

I used to be a marine biologist. My gf is a marine biologist and most marine biologists I know are with other marine biologists.

Its the lifestyle really. Its a field with an almost 50:50 split of male and female and most would have similar interests like scuba diving , sailing, surfing etc.

They say the Olympic games are a hotbed of sexual encounters. Ha! See what happens when you've got a bunch of marine biologists on a ship for a few weeks or stuck on some island somewhere.
